I found that I first started getting it off a circle, and in trot. Probably because the horses head stays still in the trot so its easier for a novice rider. Half halts just using the ring finger. Personaly I just do it off both rather than alternate. Squeeze back and as they drop down sort of catch them on it. Feel is the hardest thing to explain or teach because its unique to the horse and rider.
