Really enjoying working with the AEB-L steel. Grinds beautifully, not so prone to rust when compared to carbon steels, it's also tougher and has slightly better edge retention compared to most carbon steels. What's not to like.
The only negative is the heat treatment is just a bit more involved.
I austenetize the blades at 1060 Celcius for 15 minutes then plate quench using lots of pressure (4 heavy G Clamps screwed down hard). The blades come out immaculately flat, I have found without good pressure on the plates the blanks can warp!
Then straight from the plates into the dry ice slurry for an hour.
Two tempers @ 2hrs each at 170 Celcius results in final hardness of 60.5 to 61 Hrc.

I've been enjoying AEB-L lately as well. So far no warping during heat treat, probably due to the aggressive plate clamping method I use. Best of all my customers seem to enjoy it!

It's not all about the Knife... it's everything involved down to 12000 wet/dry and cleaners. It's easy to see you're a talented skilled Artisans Craftsman of no small scale, not just design but detail of manufacture/construction/balance... nothing is overlooked in smallest detail and not just in the Knife. No wonder a Jacklore is so prized... even given this age and the Law...! Were I still able to Hunt, I'd try hard to purchase one.. another issue a right to Arms.

Great work sir. I make some Bushcraft knives as well learned a lot from you thank you. I wanted to ask if you ever have trouble with stabilized wood shrinking. I have a few that the wood shrank slightly leaving the 01 proud of the scales slightly. Is there a way to prevent this. Thank you for all your videos.

Make sure the wood is completely dry before the stabilising process begins. You will need a vacuum chamber and a pressure pot. I generally pull a vacuum and leave the blocks submerged for atleast a day, then transfer to pressure pot, blocks again submerged and apply plus 4 or 5 bar and leave them for as long as possible, even a week or longer will do no harm before you cure them in the oven. Stabilised this way in thermo setting resin they should not move much.

Hi I use high strength CA glue for the liners and Gflex 650 when I glue up the scales

Looks very nice, Sandy. But you used to use sf100 before AEB-L. I have used much AEB-L but looking on SF100 because they have other thicknesses. They are chemical the same. But have you noticed any difference? Or why the change to AEB-L? Thanks, stay safe!

Nothing wrong with SF100 but my supplier didn't have it in 4mm thickness whereas AEB-L does come in 4mm
