Krazy Glue and Super Glue are a couple of "CA" glue adhesive I use frequently in the workshop for permanent and temporary uses like clamping wood, metal, plastic or fixing and repairing wood and even creating new woodworking projects and jigs. We also show you how to use super glue and baking soda.

For filling knot holes, coffee grounds and CA or epoxy glue work very well.

Lesson learned: I used to have a shop with poor air circulation. But even using lacquer and other volatile materials, I could put up with the odors to a certain degree. I bought a large-size amount of CA to glue some turning material together. Yes, I could smell the strong odor. But for the first time in my 40+ years of tinkering around in the woodworking shop, I actually started to be overcome by the effects of that CA! Fortunately, I got outside as quick as I could, but it took about 20 minutes for me to begin to feel better. These days, I still breath probably too much lacquer and other types of fumes, but when I use CA, I make sure I've got air circulation and a fresh air supply! For me, those fine print warnings on the container of CA really are the truth!

Colin - there are huge differences in the quality of CA glue and you get what you pay for. The best I’ve found by far is FastCap’s 2P-10. I buy their kit that has 4 viscosities from one that is as thin as water... to a thick gel.. some accelerator and a de-bonder for $30. The thinnest one will suck itself into all kinds of hairline cracks in stringed instruments that would be impossible to glue any other way. I also use it all the time to repair de-bonded face veneers, loose binding, and damaged plywood edges. Re: baking soda - we use CA plus baking soda to rebuild damaged guitar nuts- fill the top-deep slot w soda.. hit it with CA and you have something hard as a rock that can then be re-slotted.

I must get some of that accelerater. I use super glue as a sort of clamp to hold a piece while the main glue sets. Most recently on the ceiling of a boat cabin, to hold sections of wood with a the main glue being epoxy which takes a while to set in cold conditions. I put the superglue in the corners of the wood and the bulk of epoxy in the centre. The super glue sets but still needs me to hold it for a few minutes. This accelerater would help me move along with the jobs. I also use super glue to hold parts together for wood turning as it can be brittle and a tap in the right place gets them apart. I am really enjoying alll of your videos, and your presentation is just right for me. Thank you Colin.

Tip: you have temporarily glued two or more pieces of wood together with CA, and now you want to get them apart. You can smite the joint against a surface such as the top of a table saw, or give it a good whack with a hammer. CA glue does not handle shock, or temperature changes very well. Therefore, if you can fit your assembly into your freezer, a bit of hand pressure might get it apart, but certainly a light rap on a table will do the trick. This is why I personally never use it for anything that I intend to stay together permanently.
@bradenwilson
@bradenwilson 3 года назад
Or use debonder...
@oldfart269
@oldfart269 2 года назад
If you do that, you may not want to use the pieces again. If you don't use the accelerator, you may be able to soak the wood to get them apart. I have fixed things with Super Glue, and as soon as what got fixed gets wet, it falls back apart. That usually happens with glass , ceramic or porcelain items.

Having used CA glues in building remote controller airplanes from balsa wood for the past 22 years. In my experience, all CA glues I've used darken over time to a dark brown if not black color. It seems to take 10 years to start, but all CA I've used darkens steadily after that.

Thank you. Great ideas and demos. Good starting point for CA glue use. One of the comments below suggested using finger nail polish remover for clearing stuck fingers. The polish remover is diluted acetone. My experience in fiberglass work is that acetone is superior to finger nail polish remover although ventilation is key. A long time ago, decades, I used finger nail polish to correct a problem with CA glue, not on wood, and was less than enthused with results. Acetone is my go to for many situations in which, now this is the chemist speaking, in which the molecules are non polar. Thank you again.

Nice video Colin and informative as usual. I've used CA adhesives and accelerator mainly for tacking, particularly handy when positioning 1/8" or 1/4" panels and then adhere the rest of the seam with a traditional wood glue. I wonder if CA is a permanent bond alone for wood or whether the seam will break down over time? Although the accelerator seems to dry and disappear from the wood surface in 5 or 10 minutes, I wonder if it effects the woods ability to accept a stain or finish? CA adhesives certainly do glue skin as mentioned -- CA adhesive was developed in the labs of Eastman Kodak about 60 years ago, sold under the trade name of "EASTMAN 910 ADHESIVE" and sold commercially only at that time to the funeral industry -- You guessed it! ...a great little product for sealing orifices from leakage after embalming. It was many years later before the product became available to the consumer as "Crazy Glue" after the Eastman patent expired.

One thing to never do is apply CA to a part that's been blasted with accelerator by dragging the CA's spout on the surface. The accelerant will kick (catalyze) the CA in the bottle and it will be wasted.

As activator you can use rubbing alcohol. I would check strength before using - i found information that only titebond ca glue offers over 4000psi shear strenght in gluing wood (titebond 3 offers 4000psi, titebond 1 ca. 3600). Also thin ca glue is not recommended because it soaks into wood fibers and connection is weak. Better is medium or thick. Thanks for your observations sharing!

Good rule of thumb when working with CA is to keep acetone within an arm's length. Gluing self to metal surfaces can be embarrassing otherwise. Also, two other knot fillers are worth mentioning. For dark patching, consider yesterday's well dried coffee grounds. For lighter patching, grab a piece of nice, light maple and sand enough to fill the hole. I keep some in a pill bottle. Same could work with walnut dust. Good video.
