Workshop Apothecary Cabinet (Small Parts Storage Drawers with No Table Saw!)

It's time to get jiggy again as I make many small drawers without the aid of a tablesaw to help me organise my #woodworking #workshop better. This is my take on ‪@SteveRamsey‬ 's #TheWeekendWorkshop Home Hardware Store Small Parts Storage Solution. I convert an unused existing workbench pegboard area into my own private screw sorting utopia. This apothecary cabinet style storage system is pretty awesome with 54 small drawers made with no table saw.
It's not rocket science, but it is a heap of work that took me a couple months of weekends to get done. Even if you've been at this game a while if you are a hobbyist woodworker I highly recommend Steve's course where you'll find all the plans, detailed step-by-step instructions and guidance you need to do your own version of this incredibly handy bit of workshop furniture.

James....the odds of hitting a nail are similar to finding a water pipe in the backyard with your crowbar on a long weekend when you cant contact a plumber for three days....100%!! 😂 What a mission mate but the end result was fantastic.....give yourself a pat on the back mate 👍🇦🇺😁

That workshop blue paint of yours works a treat. It makes everything look like it belongs there and ties it all together. I like it.

It's left over from the toy box project I made for my nephew very early on. I got it from the "special" pallet in Bunnings for about $5 as someone ordered it and didn't like it. I t has served me well. The irony is it is now nearly all gone... and I'll have to get it colour matched soon 🤣 At least then I can get it in gloss and won't need to clear coat over the top of it again!

Already paying for itself. I was doing some handyman stuff today and needed a few 15mm 12G Dome Head screws and some green plugs. Instead of digging around for ages in the 'random' screw box, I could find them both in seconds. Loving it!

Very useful! Lots of hours work but you'll claw back those hours each time you save three minutes looking for a particular screw.

Literally already started. 1st handyman job the day after I finished it I needed an odd sized screw to fix a blind mount and could get it in 10 seconds instead of 5 minutes with a set of calipers in hand sorting through the old "Odd Screw" box :D

There are 14 projects in the course, I've now done (versions) of 7 of them. None of mine are the exact plans he did, as I always customise them to my space or put my own twist on them (like the drawer fronts on this one) but the course has been inspirational and informative. I've swapped a few quick messages with Steve but he has people running the course for him as it is very popular! Cheers Sumo!

whoa, what a project! I saw bits and pieces on IG from this build, but I was so satisfying to see it from start to finish. After it's done it looks like it has been in your workshop all the time, what a great fit. The most scary part was not when you hit the screw with your saw, but the hairstyle change at 15:57 😂

Oh yes! I need to do this. I can't stand all the wonky plastic containers store bought and recycled ...baby food jars, coffee containers ice cream tubs ect...seems when I need something I'm particular I get frustrated after rooting about looking for it. I am done before I begin! Having the right tool, organization with tools, nails, screws, washers, nuts & bolts, brads, bits and pieces, washers , lock nuts, wing nuts, or it will take more time, trips back and forth to diy home store (cuz you know you have what you need though a sight at the store triggered another thing ya need but you know you have it and you get home and can't find it trip # idk idc this time just get everything you need! This is ridiculous and the worst is you end up in a horrible mess not using what you know you have somewhere and you gave this thought to use and therefore clear the space you had a plan! ) The point is tidiness, tools, and work space organization is VITAL! should be the first step before you plan to make anything I'm not the wiser but believe that's just wise. Being unorganized, not having proper functioning tools for the job, just makes life unnecessarily feel overwhelming and chaotic creates frustration and aggravation. Which transfers to be seen in your end work too, it does. ❤I laughed how you described the time this took loooong or many days giving a few hours this repetitive process took, then following with this key phrase I enjoyed myself. And there ya go i see that in the end results too. I love it thanks for sharing your way!

Cheers mate, with a table saw you could cut the time down in half, but there is no hiding from 54 drawers 😁 I love this thing, I still have a few drawers left empty so the capacity has done well so far. The ability to just pull out the whole drawer and take it to the workbench is great. But where it really comes into its own is repair and on-the-fly work. This week I had a whole bunch of random educational displays to repair, and I managed to get through the whole job without a single trip to the hardware store. Every bolt, screws, washer and even random metal scraps and soft pads I had on hand and knew exactly where they were which made the job so much more efficient. Block out a weekend and get to work :D

Looks great. I like not having labelling as it means you look through every draw when trying to find something and get surprises as you find things you'd forgotten you had.

I agree! I like having things neat and ordered. Some folks like open planned shelves and clear drawers to see everything, I just like to know where they are and have everything look likes it was meant to be together :D

Great project and a really splendid result James! I wish you could have a table saw but I really like you thought around the problem of not having one. Good, safe, labelled storage is vital in a workshop - and something you can have pleasure using is an added bonus. There is the train of thought that "It is only for the workshop" but if we spend some of the best times of our lives there why not make the things around us aesthetically pleasing? I like to make things look nice... but then also embrace the "It's just workshop furniture" whenever something would be a pain to correct properly or I couldn't be bothered 🤣 The joys of your own space is being able to select the level of finish you are happy with from day to day. I like my navy and pine colour scheme and will likely try to retain it in all my future builds. Ironically the "Workshop Blue" paint was a $5 seconds tin that someone had returned to the hardware store... but soon I'm going to have to take it back to get colour matched as I'm nearly out!

Bang for buck it's great, and saved me heaps of time this build. The only issue with my raising hack is the piller clamp now needs modifying as it doesnt reach the bottom anymore :P

Hey James, Happy New Year. This project is fantastic. I was sorting out a few days ago several rescued screws that someone dropped at the door of the scrapyard and I was thinking of this video (I saw the title but in queue to watch it). I don't have a table saw neither a mitre saw hence if I give it a go would be just with a circular saw making it a real challenge lol.

Ooo that's another step above with no mitre saw! Biggest hint I can give is cut all your bits at once with the speed square or cross cut jig to help keep them the same length and to save time. Best of luck! Tag me in socials once you are done, would love to see it :D

@@FixitFingers thank you! will do, still a long way to go as I have a lot to organize and also build the jigs to which I'm watching your videos. Also I might try to use the multitool for small cuts if possible, will see :). I think first I have to make the supports to store the pallet timbers.

I noticed you have a combo blade in a cross cut saw, why? Im gonna remember the vac trick, that's gold!!! I've made the same mistake many many times!!! Looks good man, lot of work but worth it!!! Nice job bud!!!

RE the blade, Inexperience at time of purchase 😅 I wasn't aware of the importance of tooth count at the time. It had a 32 tooth 8.5" blade on when I bought is second hand so still a step up :P

Haha my uncle was teaching me wood working (I inherited his tools, I I need a shop area!) He crafted many many wedding props that brides dreamed up and described by verbal and scribbles... He was very meticulous because brides want what they want. His work always looked great he took on many challenging projects He asked if I wanted to be his helper. What that meant was I finally got this all figured out and I made 3 of the 25-100 that need to be made I will show you ... He didn't REALLY NEED any help he had the time what he really meant was .he accomplished the challenge and he was bored with having to do it now.... hahaaa

That seems like a very simple project, James. I would have knocked it out in 2 days (hahaha :D). Jokes apart, the finished apothecary cabinet style storage, looks really satisfying to see. I think it's one of your best builds yet in terms of complexity and challenge. It looks easy, but really involves a lot of precision. Keep it up 👍

Looks great James! I thought doing 24 box jointed drawers was frustrating, I don't even know if I would ever finish that job! lol (p.s. I would have just cut the drill bit shorter 😂)

A sheet of 18mm Marine plywood is about AUD$150 at the moment... it has come down a little recently. Regular 18mm construction pine plywood is about $100 and premium European Birch ply about $180.

So there is nothing in the course that most woodworkers couldn't retro engineer themselves or find free versions of on RU-vid. However, what it does is give you the motivation and plan to execute. I learned a lot off Steve's free videos, so for me it was a way to say thanks financially too

G'day mate, apologies that's my Australian slang showing through. This is an old video so you'll have to give me a time stamp for me to provide exact context but generally "Cheeky" can be used by Aussies to mean 'showing a lack of respect for the natural order of things that is amusing or appealing.' Eg _a cheeky beer at lunch on a work day_ Generally frowned upon, but agreeable all the same ;)
