0:46 You're very lucky that this Markneukirchen Upright Bass came w/ a Spare Tuner plus there's a spot for it already, which means we're ready to upgrade it from a 4 string to a 5 String. The biggest advantage of having it as a 5 String Bass is that we no longer need that extension on the Head stock for the low notes. The lack of an extension on the Headstock livens up the sound by allowing the Bass to vibrate more freely.
@@ThomasGeorgeViolinMakers Turning this 4 String Bass into a 5 String allowed us to get rid of that Extension which we don't need anymore. 5 String Basses are so much easier to play these days after many updates.
@UCIEUJeaurM90rjc6VjUQNUA Turning a 4 String Bass into a 5 String allowed us to get rid of that mechanical extension which we don't need anymore. You can also tune a 5 String Bass in Fifths Via Pirastro Obligato Fifths tuning Strings plus a High E Solo String. Tuning is 2 Octaves below a 5 String Violin: C, G, D, A, E. Tuning any Double Bass in Fifths will result in better intonation.
@@ThomasGeorgeViolinMakers We don't wanna scratch the finish of this perfectly good Bass. 5 String Double Basses should be used more often in Jazz, Bluegrass, Rockabilly, & other settings like Unplugged Gospel Music because that Low end from the Punchy B String is fantastic.
Turning this Bass into a 5 String Bass eliminates the need to use that extension since 5 String Basses are much easier to play these days. The narrower spacing is great cause the neck sits more natrually in your hands.
I am on the brinks of buying a Concert 4/4 fro you. This series brings me back to that discussion about 4 or 5 string bass. Auditions often require some Stravisnsky or other excerpts which require the extension. I play cello as well, and the idea of going quints on the bass has been growing in my mind. Going 5 string sorts out the C extension requirement, but then how about eventual solo tuning? Then the first string would rather be a high C? The 4 string tuned in fifths srts that out, but the caveat is now more shifting on the lower registers. Should I have rather posted this enquiry on the video of discussion about going 5 string? Anyway, I had a good taime talking to you on the phone about my project of buying a Concert model, George. It kind of felt like calling a movie star actor to talk about his last work.
Well instead of an extension, you could use Fifths tuning strings. For a 5 String Double Bass, Fifths tuning will work too cause it becomes a 5 String Bass Violin.
I think this conversion is the best thing that could ever happen to this bass, given the cirsunstances. That extension thing is by far one of the ugliest things ever created. Seriously.
Yes turning it into a 5 String allowed us to get rid of that extension cause sometimes they can have intonation issues. A 5 String Bass can be tuned in Fifths too going to a High E.
They also decided to use a more refined setup. Increasing the overstand allowed them to keep the top the way it is so it vibrates more freely, this will result in a fully functional 5 String Upright Bass that just Booms.
