Reagan was actually initially one of the politicians who pushed the heaviest for the assault weapons ban back in 89’ . Reagan said “I do not believe in taking away the right of the citizen to own guns for sporting, for hunting and so forth, or for home defense; but I do believe that an AK-47, a machine gun, is not a sporting weapon or needed for defense of a home."
I have got into arguments with Reagan lovers telling me he never said that, yet it's up on RU-vid. The sporting clause part of the 68GCA was used for the 89 import ban. It banned military features such as bayonet lugs and originally used to stop surplus bolt action imports. Most don't know things like Mosins, Enfield, Mausers etc... we're banned from import from 68 till 86

Last time I seen one was at the range was shortly after 9/11. Every table full, every one with a semi-auto(let's remember how unusual that was during the Clinton AWB), Mak-90 to my right, guy with a brand new Colt AR-10 to my left(that thing had issues). I felt safe.

I see them all the time at KC gunshows l, old geezers are selling them for upwards of $1,500. Seem them in the original package with 2 spare 5 round mags, the oil jar, and bayonet. I got mine from my dad but I got rid of the thumb hide stock and I am planning to have its evil features restored

I have a 5.56 MAK 90. Its one of the first that got through customs with a threaded barrel. Alot of them did during the first year the MAKs were being imported. I love it the thing is a tank
@@BrokenRRT nice. I also have a type 56 7.62 pre ban that's had a lot more rounds on it and it is amazing as well. You can't beat a Norinco AK for reliability. The downside of the 5.56 is the magazines. I have 2 40 rounders they're so hard to find now. Did you upgrade the furniture and ditch the thumbhole stock? I got a set from Ironwood. I got one of the last sets Matt the owner made before he died.
@@uuu817 mak-90 isn't preban. Technically it did come right before a ban. But usually preban means pre 1990. 1989 is when the first George Bush shut down the imports. And that's why they made the Mak 90 to get around that ban by making the AK into a "sporter" with a thumbhole stock that only came with a 5 round magazine included in the box. Mak 90s and other Chinese imports finally got banned for good in 1994 with Bill Clinton and they were only available for 4 years. During that 4 years they imported a couple million I think.
@Dr_Disconect2 thanks. I'll keep that in mind. But so far I've tried the other 5.56 AK mags, I tried the polish Beryls, I tried the Bulgarian circle 10. Neither work without alot of modifications to the feed lip and lug. Funny enough the .223 Wasr made by "Pro-mag" ( I know it's a low quality one) is the one that fit and worked best. With just a slight bit of dremeling it works great. Fortunately enough I collected alot of the OEM Chinese made steel mags that were made for the rifle.
@@Tactical_wulf5.56 it’s really basic but its a decent chinese ak, used to be botton of the barrel $350 a rifle or so ive heard but now you’re still gonna be looking at at least 1k for one. They work well but they’re sporterized
@@Tactical_wulf5.56it depends if you want an authentic one or if you’re okay with replicas. For a real deal Norinco Mac 90 you’ll spend probably 2k to 3k but replicas are easily $500 or less
@@isawit9722 was honesty thinking of getting the slant cut buffer tube adapter so I can put any AR style stock and pistol grip. Already completely refinished the wood stock since it was in rough shape when i origianlly got it so idk if I want to do all of that again. Good idea though.

My dad and Uncle used to run Class III Repair shop in NOVA. I grew up playing around with MP5s , Car15s , M4s and A2s . Couple of agencies had Colt SMG With Fixed Carry Handle believe it was model 635 and then became 6991..I never got to play around with AKs all that much . Mainly ARs and MP5s..
I have a MAK-90: At the time they were being imported, you were allowed to return it to its original configuration if you wanted to. Some of them were even setup for the underfolding wire stock, AND had threaded barrels. (Some had a "thread protector", that made it look as if it wasn't threaded) 🙂
I grew up with a mak90 too! I absolutely love it, was originally my Dad's but he passed away so now it's mine, but everytime we would take it to the range, I would always get so excited, love the Mak-90 wish they still made it, it's better than most AKs out there!
I upgraded and got the arsenal AK with a milled receiver, love my AK. And back of the 90s, you could pick one of those norrinco AK's for like 250 bucks.

I totally agree. One of the best AKs to this day. Made with amazing quality and an amazing factory trigger. Very accurate too. Oh ya, chrome lined barrel too. What?
Just bought an SKS Sporter as an alternative to this. in MA, MAK 90s are between $1500-$2500. I got an SKS Sporter for $800 and it takes AK mags with the 16" barrel and thumbhole stock. Certainly not a MAK 90 but it is a good compromise
i mean outside of an actual Kalashnikov AK 47 yes it probably is. I've seen a few custom ones that have been converted into a sniper rifle that were quite interesting as well.

Generally, these guns were imported with 3, 5-round magazines and wood furniture including a thumbhole stock. They are by official definition, sporting rifles.
I have a MAK 90 and a Yugoslavian SKS rifle in my collection and the Yugo is no slouch. I would say the MAK 90 is a "nicer" gun, but they both are killer shooters. I wouldn't give up either one personally. Hold onto that YUGO too. I bought mine for $150 back in 2005 or so... so they've gone up in value just a little 😉
@stalinbeballin9711 Me too. Dude who sold me mine at a local pawnshop was laughing about how they were "under $100 a few years ago". But the price just kept creeping up. At a higher rate than almost any other gun I own. And I just absolutely love the thing 😂 I wish I had bough 10 of them!
Dawg there is a big difference between assault rifle and assault weapon. Assault RIFLES were banned under the NFA. Sorry to be a Turbo Nerd I still love your content.
The funny thing is thumbhole stocks aren't detrimental to the functionality and ergonomics of the AK, since the safety selector is on the right. AR platform suffers with a thumbhole stock
