this is the first video where the different sections of meaning aren't divided by a cut, but actually the RU-vidr taking a short break and breathing in. Takes some getting used to, but I love it!
I bought this after seeing some enthusiastic reviews like yours, and I have to say - I'm disappointed. The knot in the back makes a bump in the pages, and doesn't allow them to lay flat on the desk. Similar problem with the metal piece that holds the elastic band. All in all, this is just a piece of leather with an elastic strap, being sold for $50, and isn't even designed well. I don't understand the hype.
I am very much on-board with this notebook and it's mission statement, but I don't use them myself. For one, these things are damn near impossible to put in a coat pocket and almost always require a bag. Second, I wish they'd put a pen slot in the spine area so you can put a pen inside the actual journal rather than attach it to the outside, where it's likely to get jostled off. I was also personally put off by the need for proprietary refills, but this is more of a "me" problem and my fear of running out of pages at the worst time.
Another downside I see is the choice of using elastics. Elastics tend to loosen over time so you're forced to buy others from them (which they sell). All in all it seems to me a system thought to keep you locked in. I like how it looks, but I don't like the philosophy.
They have a passport size that can fit in most pockets. People have customized theirs to have a permanent pen holder. You can buy notebooks for it that have as many as 520 pages. Most people have 3 notebooks in their Travellers, some have as many as 5. Travellers Company started the concept of this type of notebook, but, they are by no means the only makers out there now.
Great video! One quick question. You seem to travel quite a bit and it seems that you always bring your notebook and pens with you. How do you transport the pens on various flight (and in general) to avoid leaking? 🤔
TLS 2 or "the supiorior labor 2 pen clip holder" they're 40usd I don't know why they're sold out everywhere online but- not discontinued. Looks like they're only selling in Japan right now for some reason. Hope you find one my friend
Dude I’ve watched dozens of videos on this system but holy hell you just explained it SO succinctly and really illuminated every aspect for me. Thank you!
JESUS CHRIST died for us on a cross for our sins. 3 days after his death he resurrected and was, is, and will be The LIVING GOD. Repent from your sins and accept Jesus Christ as your Lord and Savior in a prayer and also ask for the HOLY SPIRIT to come into you in that same prayer as well and have FAITH in JESUS CHRIST. You could come to Jesus Christ as you are, but once you accept Him, you have to become new, change, and be born again, and also turn away from your wicked ways. Jesus Christ is the Way, the Truth, and the Life. God Bless You. The Bible is the true word of God. Please read the Bible and you will see Jesus Christ is the Way, the Truth, and the Life. Praise only be to GOD. JESUS CHRIST IS COMING SOON FOR HIS CHURCH.
I've had one of each size about 8 years now. I don't use the passport anymore, but full-size I use the plastic pouch, lined, blank, and calendar notebooks, and a craft pouch. It's very tight but it works. Definitely love the system
Well, suede is also leather, of course, and I find it to be very durable. I like the suppleness of it over the stiffness of regular leather. I like Traveler's, and used it for about three years, but I switched over to a six ring binder with a leather cover because I find it much more versatile. I but tabbed page dividers, and I can switch pages around so every subject or type of writing stays together, and it always lays one hundred percent flat, which is important to me. I keep watching Traveler's videos looking for anything I might have missed when using that system, but so far, at least, the binder system is simply working much better.
I don't think Japan has ever made anything bad, ever. Even if they intentionally tried to make something shit, it would surpass anything made anywhere.
maurice!!! the entire time i was watching I was thinking - geez who needs a charm. And then you talked about them and put them on and now I am searching the charms to buy!!!!!!! :) great content from travel to this and everything inbetween love it!
Thank you for your video. I'm a user of notebooks of all kinds, but I didn't quite understand the concept of a traveler's notebook, your tips are incredibly practical. Thanks for your talented work, I follow you from Madrid, Spain.
I had my original notebook stolen one day a few years ago. The replacement is arriving tomorrow and I'm so excited!! I suffer from Multiple Notebooks Crowding my Bag Disease right now, it'll be a game-changer to have this new traveler's book. HOWEVER. I've found I need to make custom refills. Their sketch paper/watercolour paper inserts just didn't cut the mustard for me, so instead, I make my own out of 70lb toned tan paper or rough recycled brown sketch paper with cardstock covers. Thankfully, the measurements are easy to figure out if you have a ruler and some spare time!
see that's the beauty of this physical ecosystem this aint some apple bullshit where u got a pacific connector for their atlantic phone like what the fuck all this system is is elastic, leather, and sized paper that's been bound u can always make ur own and like hell is traveler's company gonna try and stop you
thanks for introducing me to these note books, treated myself to the camel leather cover and a few pads, ive been a fountain pen user for years and love the paper quality at a bargain price.
A thank-you and a note on this video (👍). Thanks for the illustration of retaining three TC inserts. I have been doing it differently but I like yours better. Among other things, I think it may close better. On the TC brass ruler, you didn't mention the feature that I have come to like best: the slightly raised edge on one side. Why do I love that? No more ink-y ruler edges! I use a ruler a lot and it sounds a little laughable but this is a game changer, Even super-fast drying inks (which I don't always use) can leave ink on the edge of the ruler and sooner or later that's going to get things dirty. Caution on this excellent ruler: the brass is quite soft and it can bend if dropped. It's pretty easy to straighten out, but I've never had a stainless steel, plastic or aluminum ruler do that. Nevertheless, it's still my absolute favorite ruler.
Great video - I have been using the passport style inserts from travelers for a while (no cover) and this has been helpful to decide to get a cover. The larger size seems so big - what is your preference when working with the two sizes - space to write vs size to carry. When I travel - I journal, have pre-written notes for myself and do urban sketching... I don't care for their watercolor art paper - but I think I could customize my own and fit it into the system. Thanks for the video - great info!
Many thanks for curating such visually captivating video content. I especially appreciate how concise, yet informative, delivering a wealth of knowledge. And now I'm eager to dive into your other videos. Thank you!
Pretty cool. I’ve been journaling since 2016. I came across Field Notes and have been using them since 2016. I made my own cover that looks very similar to your Travelers cover but about half the size. Great video 👍🏼
Had to finally leave a comment after binging several videos. Great video and great channel. These notebooks look fantastic, a big step up from the field notes I'm currently using. I really like what you've covered so far, and can't wait to see what you will cover next!
I have a hand made custom TN cover, in B6 size. It has 6 elastics and I love it! I also have a nano size TN as my wallet, also custom. I love supporting small businesses, so going that route and enjoying the extra customization was best for me.
Finally found the notebooks I can use every day! Recently discovered your channel and really like your presentations. Clear demonstrations and photography. Thanks.
Maurice.. thank you for the video. You presented a very cogent argument for using the Travelers Notebook system for journaling. However, there was one item that was over-looked as a component of your notebook, namely the "cotton zipper case" that you added as a customized piece to the basic Travelers setup. Do you know how and where to purchase this item? Does the company still make this? I would appreciate the help. Thanks.
Hi there, the cotton zipper case was launched in 2021 as part of a limited edition setup. Officially it's labelled as "Traveler’s Notebook Cotton Zipper Case" and came in four colours - orange and olive for regular, and blue and mustard for passport. Unfortunately as they were limited edition the odds of finding them still available in stock are dwindling rapidly. I can find all but the mustard passport one here in the UK but whether you'll be able to do the same where you are is questionable Still, if you look elsewhere you'll find people selling their own handmade versions of this insert cheaper than the official onces
Im so happy to have found not only this video but your channel! Im eagerly awaiting my first Traveler’s notebook set up. My husband and I will be returning to the south of France for the first time since lockdown. In the past Ive journaled all our travels but the notebooks have been a mess. Im trying to be more streamlined. Thank you so much for being clear and concise!!
New subscriber here! I thoroughly enjoyed your video and am eager to consume more. And, as someone who has been using cheap, soulless office notebooks for years, it’s time for a major upgrade. Thank you for the introduction to Travelers! Also, I love the audible breaths between thoughts and phrases. It reminds me of Jeff Buckley’s take of “Hallelujah” off of his album, Grace. Sublime!
Cool Concept, still don’t want them. I just use 2 field notes inside of a generic passport cover. Could do with a writing utensil holder as I have a ballpoint, fountain pen and a mech pencil that’s in my EDC. Thanks for sharing either way.
A couple things happened during the viewing of this video. One, I ordered a Travelers Notebook "starting kit" of sorts, and I'm very excited. And two, you forced me to go dig out my old LAMY Al-Star fountain pen which I'd ditched in a drawer because the nib was leaking. I re-seated the nib and installed a new ink cartridge. My love for this pen is renewed. Thank you!
@@Shmyrk on a Lamy, it will generally involved adding a new O-ring between the nib and the barrel - generally white on the lighter colour barrels and black on the darker ones. I would also take a look at #Ellington pens which are slightly more expensive than Lamys but which are generally more of a metal construction, some of them extremely nice to use and solid-feeling.
I have a regular and passport. My regular gets more mileage than the passport including recipes, bujo and long form writing. My passport is more calendar and trying to replace my Moleskine which has 20 years in my back pocket. (Some fill quick, some need duct tape). The Midori paper is rock solid. I’ve replaced the kraft pocket ends a couple of times and a half dozen elastics, but it keeps going.
Your vid inspired me to order this, the leather looks beautiful, very much looking forward to breaking it in. Also got the Lamy safari based on your recs, and the IKEA shelf/drawer for my EDC :) thanks for the great content!
Hello!!! I liked your video a lot. Good explanation for everything with many details. However, I want to ask for a favor, I live in Greece and specially at the island of Rhodes and I want to order 2 charms and one pen holder but after a lot of search online I cannot find any website that has and can deliver to Greece...😢 Can you help/suggest where I can order? Thanks a lot in advance!
Hey Maurice! I love your content! Just bought a passport sized; I was wondering if you have a recommendation for the zipper pocket for the passport sized notebook. I see you managed to source one but I dont think its a Traveler's company branded one?
fcken expensive and impractical. honestly, a clean dot page spring notebook and a zebra F-701 pen will do. this on the other hand, is just a step above a "Frozen" notebook.
Great presentation…very well done. However there are multiple covers for the travelers notebook on Amazon for less than half the price…and it appears they are just as good if not better. That’s not to denigrate your presentation in any way….
Cool setup I want to get a notebook for work mainly... but will at the same time get my thoughts throughout the days and when I travel.. love that pen clip!
Absolutely the best video notebooks. Exactly what we need! We travel to the United States and I need a calendar and a journal section. Thank you. Finally made a decision
So I have been using Travelers style notebooks since they were called Midori. I noticed your pen loop doesn’t seem to be a standard loop. I have the style as on your passport size. Where did you get it?
Great video and a big fan of the Traveler's notebook. Check out our waterproof, tear-proof, indestructible Tuk Books! They were designed for traveling. We'd be happy to send you a sample!
Where do you store your used traveler notebook inserts? Do you save and organize them for easy access later on? It would be nice to see how you store those old used inserts or how you decide whether to keep it or throw it away. Thanks!
I would appreciate any information about fountain pens you would like to share. Great video! I really enjoyed the video on productivity as well. Thank you!
Within minutes of clicking on this video (1st time here), I can see you are knowledgeable and sincere. Subscribed! Thanks for the great info!! Take care 🙂
Thank you so much!!! I’m new and now a Subscriber 😊 your video was so informative and concise 👏🏽 I’m getting my TN this week …. I can’t wait! I realized after watching your video I should have order an anchoring strap 😩.
Good video on these 👊🏻🙂 I’ve been a collector since around 2012 I think it was. All the special editions are too tempting. I’m enjoying a regular and a Passport Starbucks Reserve TN at the moment. Although I got myself into tomoe river paper inserts too so that’s another story! 😂
Love the ruler at the beginning. Where can I find it? Btw great videos, I love how you take your time to explain all things and the pauses make the video more easygoing
Lol I got the ruler first. It’s solid. It made me appreciate the quality that led me to get the actually journal. You can order it online or if you are in major city see if a store is nearby.
I've wanted to use these, but all the covers have the elastic band which I don't like. I've looked for other options, but I might end up making or modifying something else.
Maurice, great review, thank you. I was not aware of the TN until your video, having done some research, I have found that September Leather make a very similar product but at a fraction of the price. I bought the standard size TN, without the hard spine. It has 4 elastics built in which in my opinion is much better than the Traveller’s Company which only has one. I think you are paying a lot for the brand name with Traveller’s Company.
I've been using a Grand Voyageur Pocket-size notebook for the past four months - it's a little bigger than the passport-size Traveler's notebook and it hits a nice sweet spot. I'm in the middle of a career change and considering the standard-size Traveler's notebook for work but the pages seem a little tight - does anyone have any experience with switching to it from standard A6-size paper?
Getting back to your videos after a year and have been using both Lamy Safari and Traveler's notebook from your recommendations. Now busy learning how to actually take notes especially for my PhD. Thank you kindly !!
That darn ruler, and several other amazing accessories i always want, are always out of stock when i think to go look. BTW. subscribed bc it sounds like you live and die with your notebook(s) and FPs in your hands.
Hi Maurice, great videos and lots of good information, but I think the links here for the products changed, maybe a revisit to upgrade the links ? Greetings from Calgary 🙂
Maurice, your video is amazing and neat. I’ve learned everything I need to know about the traveler’s notebook system. You are so thorough, neat, and professional. I love your video-it’s the best notebook video indeed! Maurice, you are an inspiration. Love your production; it’s so clear. Thank you
Nah fam those maruman soft spiral notebooks are best. Good paper, lots of sizes, like 12$ a pop. Spiral means lays perfectly flat. Soft spiral means not cutting up other shit in your bag.
Is the use of the compression lock disk primarily so that the page marker has a place to attach to? Im wondering if it was for the purpose of attaching the page marker and aesthetic appeal but if it has functional relevance for the spine elastic id like to know what that is, its bugging me haha
Yes it has a function, if you look on the website for ordering replacement elastic cords, the instructions explain that the disc is used to help clamp the end of the cord down so it stays in place after you tie it.
Thanks for this video as well as others…! Really helpful 🙏🏻 Beyond the links in the description (thx) if I digit traveler’s notebook company all the results seem, or pretend to, to be the original. Do you have the link for the “original” one to check all of their products? Thanks a lot and keep doing video like this…
Dude I just realized how much your voice reminds me of “Bear in the Big Blue House” Beautiful video man. Really appreciate the clarity of thought and explanation
@@ClearMind-1752 it does, not a good design. Also, because of the way the notebooks are held to the cover with an elastic band, whenever you try to open the notebook it’s always opens to the same page. It’s like a permanent bookmark.
I'm so split right now -- I LOVE writing in a notebook, and it's a lot more convenient + more socially acceptable than writing on a laptop, but since learning to use vim, I'm so FAST with a keyboard :/
