The Carretera de la Muerte - the road of death- is one of the most dangerous roads in the world. Year after year many people die here. We accompany trucker Omar and his co-driver Jaime on their trip across the Andes, encountering cyclists, mountain bikers, and coca farmers on the way. Some fun and not so fun facts about Bolivia 🇧🇴 1. Bolivia's Yungas Road was called the "world's most dangerous road" by the Inter-American Development Bank, called (El Camino de la Muerte) in Spanish. The northern portion of the road, much of it unpaved and without guardrails, was cut into the Cordillera Oriental Mountain in the 1930s. 2. Bolivia is a landlocked country located in western-central South America. The constitutional capital is Sucre, while the seat of government and executive capital is La Paz. 3. Its geography varies from the peaks of the Andes in the West to the Eastern Lowlands, situated within the Amazon basin. It is bordered to the north and east by Brazil, to the southeast by Paraguay, to the south by Argentina, to the southwest by Chile, and to the northwest by Peru. 4. Before Spanish colonization, the Andean region of Bolivia was part of the Inca Empire, while the northern and eastern lowlands were inhabited by independent tribes. Spanish conquistadors arriving from Cusco and Asunción took control of the region in the 16th century. 5. Bolivia is named after Simón Bolívar, a Venezuelan leader in the Spanish-American wars of independence. 6. The United States Central Intelligence Agency(CIA) financed and trained the Bolivian military dictatorship in the 1960s. The revolutionary leader Che Guevara was killed by a team of CIA officers and members of the Bolivian Army on 9 October 1967, in Bolivia. I must say I have so much respect for all the drivers of this dangerous road. I’m just an American watching from my couch on RU-vid on my cell phone realizing just how spoiled and blessed I am when watching a video like this and it makes me feel humble to say the least. Again, much respect to all of you driving these roads and living a life so many couldn’t do. Thank you for showing the world what you do and sacrifice everyday but also, thank you so showing us the beauty of your country.

I was on that road in 1976. There were chickens flying around our passenger bus. The bus got a flat and he had no jack so we had to dig a hole under the bus by hand and prop it up with rocks to change the tire. Lots of Catholic style little memorials along the way. I was too young (about 19) to recognize the danger and through if was a beautiful scenic drive. At one point I looked out the window and directly next to our bus was about a 500 ft straight cliff drop and I did see crashed trucks and vehicles down at the bottom. I am almost 70 now and have vivid visual memories of that road often through the years.

i live in south america. chewing coca leaves has been used for more than 5,000 years. coffee has only been used for 2,000. also coca leaves are extremely healthy, full of vitamins and other important nutrients. it's great for bones, digestive system and a natural sustain energy that's better and without the crash like coffee. the only down side is that bad people can use coca leaves to make drugs =(

Born in the US, raised in La Paz and Santa Cruz Bolivia many years past. The country is stunning but it can be intimidating at times. The Collas are such a patient people, work like dogs eking out a meager living on the Altiplano where my familia used to drive on holidays. If my memory serves me, I rode a bus from Santa Cruz to La Paz, and may have been on la carretera de la muerte. The little oxygen is what I remember well. An assistant driver went down the aisle with a bag of oxygen with a hose for those of us not accustomed to the thin air. And yeah, there were many but many crosses and altars along the roads from vehicles running off and splatter the occupants on the deep rocky canyons far below. At times it took weeks or more to retrieve the corpses. Older, I now only take a commercial flight everywhere in Bolivia. I do miss the best years as I was being raised in Bolivia.

I do think that the safety of the vehicles plying any dangerous road anywhere around the globe is dependent on the One Super Being who guides all His creatures big or small...so blessed is the driver and some of the passengers who make the sign of the cross before the journey to implore God to give them a safe trip along these dangerous roads...It's a sign of humility...I am from the region of the northern Philippines where we have our own dangerous road called the "Halsema road"...most of it has now been paved but it is still steep...Thanks to you James Alexander for sharing us your experiences riding along the dangerous road of Bolivia...

It seems like in every one of these videos people from the other countries are so nice and are so happy with just the bare minimum of things still so kind to one another I wish American people could take some lessons in that

I’ve been the Yungas area in Bolivia. Bolivia built a new paved and safe highway a few years ago to reach these areas. So people who go on that highway only go on there if they want to. The highway is mostly used for extreme cycling tours now. It’s a beautiful area!

Well, as someone who works in Yungas, in fact there is a new road to Coroico, but the death road is to the other side, to Sud Yungas, or Chulumani and other villages, the road is improving in that area but still is like the one in the video in some parts and a lot, a lot of people lives there :)

I was going to ask that, the new road was finished in 2007 so I wonder why those people are driving there
