On May 15th 2017, the World Affairs Council-Washington, DC (WAC-DC) hosted His Excellency Aizaz Ahmad Chaudhry, Ambassador of Pakistan to the United States. The event commenced with opening remarks by the WAC-DC International Affairs Director, Ms. Stephanie Fassler discussing the recent improvements within Pakistan’s economy and security environment, while also mentioning the challenges presented in its various regional and international relationships with countries such as India and the United States. Former Congressman James P. Moran served as the program discussant. The Ambassador began by highlighting the improvements made in recent years within various aspects of Pakistani society. This started in the security domain where terrorist acts, which once occurred at a rate of approximately 150 each month, have now been virtually eliminated. Ambassador Chaudhry explained this was a result of an efforts made to build a national consensus that opposed militants operating within Pakistan’s borders. According to the Ambassador, the perception held by many, especially in the United States that Pakistan is a haven for extremists is out of date.
