even if every detail isn't fully appreciated or noticed, i feel like you can tell just how much love is put into someone's work and how much they enjoyed the experience of creating that world and that makes a huuuge difference to me. awesome work!
to tell the truth, even if you don't consciously notice the details, you will subconsciously notice them. things like a newspaper can't be read fast enough on film, but your eyes still see it and if its off, it will take your attention away. the human brain is wired to notice when things aren't right, its a survival mechanism. and while normally we can turn it off for movies and such, sometimes it doesn't work and next thing you know you're focusing on the fact that the underground passage some how as light coming from places where there shouldn't be light, instead of focusing on what the actors are doing.
@@abiean222 this is a very excellent point! i kept it vague because i was thinking of various types of media but you absolutely nailed why attention to detail is such a key part of movie magic specifically.
I love as much detail as possible when I build miniatures... I created a tea set once with a miniature tea-bag that had real tea and could be used. The set came in a box by a non-existent tea company. It had a teapot, a spoon a teacup and the tea bag. I think it was orange pekoe tea lol As a creative, I agree, world building is exhilarating fun!
Gosh hearing this makes me wanna make miniature rooms and stuff so bad, I've always wanted to but seeing the interesting stuff you can do with stuff you can do with mini things makes me wanna more : )
@@Juliooo00 Do it! Even if you aren't happy with how it turns out you'll learn something for the next projects you embark on. It also gives a perfcet excuse to look at all the bits and bobs you might normally throw out through a new lense... that toothpaste cap can be all kinds of items at different scales! I say go have some fun!
This is the kind of thing I needed to see. I'm an indie game dev and I kept fighting with myself about whether or not I was being too focused on the little details. Now I understand better. Thank you :)
Toby Fox is a good reference point for you and most indie game devs. He unintentionally created Undertale and we all have memories attached to Undertale and it was an amazing and detailed game, utilizing code and files to change stuff within the game. Changing your saves via Notepad and the Values of certain things will allow you to see W.D. Gaster. Or you can summon the room with Annoying Dog and secret menus.... I hope you make a memorable game and I hope you succeed from your projects and remember where you are in the Universe and what impossible probability it took for us to be here, on a floating ball of dirt and water, surrounded by other planets, and if you want a real motivational support, look up Carl Sagan "Pale Blue Dot". The Voyager probe made it out of the Solar System and before she did, she turned around and took one last picture of us. A small dot in the photo, suspended by a solar ray, millions of miles away from anyone and anything and she made the journey to find life on other planets... I never don't cry when I hear Carl Sagan's beautiful speech 😢❤
Now this is what passion looks like. I've been following the channel for a couple weeks now and I can't wait for your film to come out. Good luck finishing it!
My favourite thing about working on my thesis was making intricate photoshop renderings of my building including adding my own art to the walls😂 one had my own funeral/memorial with my graduation picture in it. I love it when artists have fun putting all the extra little details into their work. People might never notice but knowing it’s there definitely brings some joy!
PLEASE MAKE THIS AVAILABLE ONLINE TO READ OR SOMETHING!! i love when creators put in this type of detail in their work!! i'm making a little webcomic and my main characters appear in a magazine thing and i might actually make it like able for people to read that if it makes sense, so that's kind of the same thing in a way
Creating your own headcannon for the world You’re building out can greatly increase the joy that goes into the building process itself. I’m not a filmmaker, but I do write my own campaign settings and stories when I DM for D&D, and little lore bits and details that likely only I will know about are some of my favorite things aside from the enjoyment of my players.
One of my favorite animated movies is Atlantis- over 80% of the world building went unused. But it made the artists more confident in their story and what they were doing
As someone who edits for a newspaper, this is a very robust paper. The attention to detail is spot-on, with most of the changes I'd make (shuffling around paragraph orders) being unnoticable to the average person. If you ever need to make a newspaper again and want to get the nuances perfect, I'd highly recommend looking up the inverted pyramid and a brief summary of AP style for the fundamentals.
personally i can’t wait to see the final result! i have been following your work on this project for just a few months but you totally blew me away with every short, each and every detail is just perfect and the style is amazing and i can see that you work with passion for what you do and most importantly love.
I love everything about how passionate you are about your work, because it reminds me of how when an artist cares about their craft it really shows. I love this so much
Mad respect, actually writing a newspaper (or part of it) cogerently even if it will show on-screen for like... 3 minutes max is actually something that i respect, not that i despise writing gibberish, sometimes large studios need to find ways to reduce production time, but still
World building and story telling through environments are just so cool. I love when a world feels lived in and you can tell something about the history of a place just by looking
I think the fact that you put your heart in soul into every timing detail of your work will not only my make it better but help you always feel like you’re not just slogging through to get to the end but enjoying every step of the journey to get there.
Personally thank you so much for this. I love when people actually detail or put hidden Easter eggs in books/papers/pictures because it makes the whole thing feel more real.
I think doing stuff like this make it easier to add little Easter eggs, and as a writer myself I do enjoy adding cute Easter eggs from past projects and old storylines
PLEASE we need more artists doing this stuff I love pausing and reading little things like papers or signs and stuff in the backgrounds of movies or shows it's so entertaining for me and helps me either better understand the story or form questions and theories about it.
I LOVE IT when movies do this! I am one of those people who always pauses to scour and tries to read and notice all the little details…just as I paused and tried to read all the little details here! You should sell copies of this newspaper to support your next movie. By the way, I still can’t stop thinking about and tearing up about Gruff. It deserves an Oscar. It is better than most films - short or long. I never thought that I would feel this much emotion from a ten minute short. Just incredible. I can’t wait to see your other videos. Also, I have scoured your channel for “Making of Gruff” videos, but can’t find any. I would love to see some, if you have any.
When I animate for my school projects I also do that like I make every single detail like the scratches, and the articles even though almost no one likes my animations
I have a feeling there were some unenjoyable parts.. like when a paper mini figure rips from wear and tear. And if you’re reading this I’d love to know how you’ve found a way to truly enjoy the majority of the process, because I’m really struggling with motivation on my passion projects 😔😞
There certainly have been. I think I just meant you should have fun dreaming up your worlds and details within them! I recognize the execution can be in enjoyable, if not stressful!
I know this is a few months old but, I've seen your film-it's pretty good. Viewing all your shorts and watching your behind the scenes and personal insights has really brought to my attention my recent lack of love for my art. Gruff is truly inspirational and beautifully crafted; the love and excitement you express about all your hard work and experiences is very-uplifting(?) yet was sort of a reality check for me. I've always loved art, it's been my niche and love my entire life but the past two years it's been so-whats the word.. I just havent enjoyed it, to the point where I dread drawing or designing. Every art related thing just seems to drain me, and I get frustrated when things don't turn out how I imagined them to, making me feel even more burnt out. (not to mention art block) I don't really remember why im writing this blabber, I originally wanted to just comment that Gruff was amazing, inspirational, and extremely detailed-but once I heard that ``You're doing something wrong if you're not having fun making every detail of your project``-reality just kinda hit. Sorry if my nonsense makes absolutely no sense I havent slept in like three days
Can't belive I just watched this!! Is was truly incredible and it feels like the end of somthing I love but the begining of somthing new and exciting!!
My theatre group is doing Newsies for our spring production, and I’m in charge of designing programs. I made the program itself a newspaper, and put all the necessary information within the words/headlines/etc. this also meant filling in the extra space with news that’s relevant to the show, so I spent about an hour and a half writing in a bunch of words that most people probably won’t bother to read 😭 it was so worth it though. It looks fantastic
I honestly freeze every frame of indie anything videos that has written articles, a piece of paper in hand, mewspaper, posters, etc, just to read them and see if they put actual stuff. And they usually do. And they are hilarious or insanely cool and detailed. I love it so much.
I find this relatable lol. I make comics and it’s actually fun making details on background, the world, or in this case, a newspaper that anyone could just ignore and read onto the next panel.
Everyone talks about icebox logic as if its a bad thing but IMO having more and more to find out the more you watch the movie is a wonderful thing and gives some interactivity to the medium
Coded an app a few weeks ago for high school, i spent 10 hours learning and coding, 5 hours learning, and 5 hours coding in 2 seperate days, one of the most fun I have ever had didnt even knoe how much time I spent on it.
I think making an art book documenting everything you’ve made for the film would be so cool so details like these wouldn’t go under appreciated!! I’ve seen some movies do that but I also don’t know much about that. Not sure if it’s something you’d consider but I know I would love one
Whenever I watch a short film or movie/episode with newspapers, I almost ALWAYS pause to read it! It’s so cool that you actually spent a ton of time making it readable! :D I’m so excited for the short film!!
Honestly I relate to this from making games, I spend so much time fleshing out the world, the characters, props etc so it all feels ‘genuine’, to me at least. Most of the detail will probably be lost on the player but I just enjoy crafting a world and putting love into what I do.
You should really put lore in these, it would give your channel bigger uproar than it already has! 😂 But I love the attention to detail, it’s always something I love.
dude!! i put details on my artworks too!! :3 tho people wont be able to notice it cause they dont zoom in and observe for like 20 minutes, i still find it fun just adding silly little details to my drawings.
Every detail will be seen by at least some one and most people can at least see the detail that goes in to it, never stop making stuff my guy and I love the heart and soul you add
My dad and i will do everything to pause on small text in films and its always such a pleasure when we see the details in some of them. Never a waste of time from my experience! ^~^
I don't know if you know this, but that aspect of your passion is a rarity that you don't see outside of some of the greatest pieces of media ever. The desire to breathe life even into the tiniest most minute aspects of a story speaks to your talent and drive as an artist. Who knows, maybe "Gruff" will stand on the same level as "Lord of the Rings", "Pet Sounds", "Hello Dolly", or "Fallout: New Vegas" as one of the greats of it's medium.
I absolutely love your work and it's so inspiring :3 Your paperwprk is absolutely stunning and mind-blowing. Especially in the animation space. I mean sure South Park is a thing but your work is stunning and blows the simple Monty Python stop motion paper art work, blown out of the water honestly.
That is so mind-blowingly beautiful and amazing! I guess that is the big difference between a true artist and a technician : both can be driven but one enjoys to put effort in every little step on the way, while the other just wants to finish their project and hop on to the next.
I love this so much. It may not be noticeable to everyone but it’s noticeable to you and that’s my favorite thing about art. All those hidden details we add just for our own enjoyment ❤
I really love people that aren’t this creative like art is different different people see in different ways and that’s that’s the whole fun of all the fun of being creative❤
I’m so happy I got this recommended to me I’ve watched your channel for a few weeks now and it’s just great you really deserve more recognition cause what you do is great I can’t wait to see the finished product and you are calling this a short film but by god this feels so much longer wich is great I wish you did a full length thing like this stay blessed dude
The attention to detail which isn’t even going to be visible in the Final Cut is insaneeeeeeeeeee! Just saw the film and was going through your process videos….this newspaper and even the party scene where in the film you show the characters back….the rest of the scene is not clear coz of the focus shot in the Final Cut but I can see all the effort you put into the rest of the characters 🤌🏻👏🏻 MAD RESPECT!
