'World champion of what?' Noah Lyles takes swipe at NBA players

Following his win in the 200m - part of his 3-for-3 performance at the world athletics championships in Budapest - US sprinter Noah Lyles took a swipe at the NBA for calling the season winners world champions.

'I watch the NBA Finals and they have "world champion" on their head. World champion of what? The United States?” Lyles said.
'Don't get me wrong. I love the US - at times - but that ain't the world,' the 26-year-old added. Lyles elaborated to say that track is a true international sport, adding 'we have almost every country out here fighting, thriving, putting on their flag'. His playful comments drew a reaction from a number of NBA players, with Kevin Durant commenting on Instagram: 'Somebody help this brother'.

In most countries outside the US, basketball wouldn't even be in the top 10 sports. In the UK Netball is the 10th biggest sport and is a bigger sport than basketball. Athletics/Track is 6th on the list, easily bigger than basketball.

No he's just completely wrong! And you can tell that he doesn't really follow the NBA to be making bold statements like this publicly. The NBA doesn't just have USA players. Where's Jokic from? Luka? @@andreandrews6237 Having grown up in Mexico that is the excuse we always give when we are sore losers in Futbol as well. There is no denying that there is a lot more management and tactical scheduling of players when you play more tournaments. Players are not made of unlimited stamina. Not sending your best players (to the extent the rules allow) and then using that as an excuse is just lazy.

This argument is about nothing more than Semantics. Spain is considered the current World Champion in basketball but the Olympics are higher on the totem pole of world competition seeing as how every nation sends their best possible team for that set of global competition. The NBA is the best basketball league in the world comprising of the best basketball players in the world. No other team on the planet is beating the Nuggets in a playoff series, so what difference does it make if they are referred to as NBA or World Champions ???

Thus, the NBA (National Basketball Association). The USA team is our World League that competes during the Olympics. And although they have dominated over the years. They have also lost on more than a few occasions.

During the 90’s there used to be an International tournament called the McDonald’s Championship that used to invite an NBA team to play against championship clubs from Europe, South America, & the NBL* (Oceania region). It ran for 9 years with the NBA representative winning all nine years. So again, what difference does it make referring to the NBA champ as the World champ ??? No other team in the world will beat the NBA champ in a series.

Another ignorant comment... That's literally just a name that was created 75 years ago when the NBA was only National... It hasn't been a national League for the last 40 years.. Look up international league... A minor league organization will come up that literally only has American teams... But it's called international league because it started off as a league 70 years ago with teams from different countries... But not anymore... But the name didn't change... So only an child would use a name for an organization as a defense for this lol Unlike Other sports like Track, Soccer etc... There aren't multiple leagues and multiple competitions where the best players play... There's only one basketball league where the best players from across the entire planet play... The NBA is an amalgamation of national and international athletes that gather predominately in the US to compete. USA Track & Field is the United States national governing body for the sports of track and field...affiliated with world athletics. The NBA hails global athletes. Lyles is hollering stupidity simply because he won his medals on foreign land. Furthermore, at the end of the season, the champions wear a hat that says: 2023 NBA Champs.

It does when that league is the only league in the entire sport across the world that features the best players in the world... It's not like soccer and track where you have multiple leagues and competitions where the best in that sport compete against each other... Basketball doesn't have that... FIBA world cup for basketball features mostly players that can't make the NBA... Same for Olympics and any other basketball league... These are second tier and lower players... So yeah in soccer or track winning the best league doesn't make you a world champion because the best players play in multiple leagues and competitions... But in basketball... The NBA is the only competition where you will find the best players in the world playing basketball... y'all don't understand because your entire sports knowledge is based off of just one sport... @@andrdmosley the 1992 dream team was considered world champions they beat every other country to earn the right to call themselves world champions. The 2023 Denver nuggets beat every NBA team and became champions. One team beat all other countries to win the gold medal vs another who beat NBA teams to win a NBA trophy.

He is just pointing out what the rest of the world knows. The NBA may be the best basketball league and have the best players in the world, but their contests are between teams in North America, not between teams representing countries around the world. It’s just a simple fact. Of course no other basketball team outside of the US can beat the Nuggets, but that is not the point. The title World Champion is not about being the world’s best, but a title conferred to a team representing one country beating another country’s team. Any American that disagrees is ignorant.

I do believe that a world champion can be crowned through different countries competing. I also believe that you can do the same by building teams full of the best players in the world. Facts ?? Show me where the global brand, the NBA uses "world" in reference to their championship. Their championship series are called The NBA Finals. Winners are called The NBA Finals Champions. Noah stated he see "world champions" on their head, Google images of NBA Championship,official hats the winners wear on the floor does not have the word "world". So Noah is not speaking facts at all. How can understand when he's flagrantly wrong. The NBA does not use the word "world" in regards to their championship. The championship series is known as THE Finals. Their winners are known as The NBA Champions or The NBA Finals Championship. Like I've stated before, when these countries form their own league to compete with the NBA during the regular season outside of the Olympics or World events then this would be debatable. The NBA have every right to claim "World Champions" when they're a multi billion dollar business that other countries knows about the NBA players, buys NBA products, the NBA televise their games in certain countries, and these countries will role out the red carpet for the NBA teams to play in their stadium for their people almost once every year, is on a World level.
