Don't expect one country on Earth to share all of its resources to the whole world, especially to those that treat that country as their enemy.

Government to reinvigorate the industry. That sounds like government subsidies and support, what people keep blaming the Chinese government for doing.

Americans are hypocrites --- whatever they do is fine, others doing the same is evil, unfair trade practice and whatever they want to brand it.

China is right! For why should they look out for other countries? China has a very large population of whom innovation stands paramount. If China uses up all their rare earths, then where will they be able to get more?

"Such is the context in which companies like Molycorp in the USA or Lynas Corp in Australia have put the West back into the contest for rare earth production; and what a costly contest it is proving to be, especially because neither one of these two companies has been able to produce even moderate quantities of the high-demand heavy rare earths (HREE) - this is very costly." - "The 800 Pound Gorilla in the room for rare earth sustainability in North America - thorium"

@ilvtofku and if China supplies to the US, they will build more planes and ships to surround China. They will also make more weapons and sell them to places like South Korea to promote korean war, sell to Japan to get them to fight China, Sell them to Taiwan and tell them to use it against China, Sell it to India and tell them to use it agains Pakistan and China and also sell them to Israel and let them use it against Palestan and Iran etc.

I've read that the US is in Afghanistan because they've found rare earth's there. Is this true? But why else would they be at war there there for 17 years?

All the technology that uses rare earth elements tends to have a short life cycle so need to reclaim the rare earths as part of total material reuse.

Colorado-based Molycorp, Inc. is the only REO producer in the Western Hemisphere and currently produces more than 3,000 metric tons of commercial rare earth materials per year. In addition to its rare earth mine and processing facility at Mountain Pass, California, Molycorp also owns a controlling interest in the Estonia-based Molycorp Silmet AS, which has a production capacity of 3,000 metric tons of rare earth products and 700 metric tons of rare metal products annually and is one of the largest rare metal and rare earth metal producers in Europe. Following the execution of Molycorp's "mine-to-magnets" strategy and the expected 2012 completion of Phase 1 of its modernization and expansion efforts at its Mountain Pass, California processing facility, Molycorp expects to produce at a rate of approximately 19,050 metric tons of REO equivalent per year from Mountain Pass. The Company expects to achieve an annual production capacity at Mountain Pass by the end of 2013 of approximately 40,000 metric tons of REO equivalent per year after the completion of Phase 2. Molycorp intends to provide to the market a range of rare earth products, including high-purity oxides, metals, alloys, and permanent magnets. The company currently sells products to customers in Europe, North and South America, Asia, Russia, and other previous Soviet Union countries.
