Couldn't agree more. USSR and Yugoslavia dominated basketball in Europe and that's why Galis leading the national team changed everything here in Greece concerning basketball, by defeating twice USSR (87 & 89) and Yugoslavia (2*87).
@@ΠαναγιώτηςΔακτυλούδης Back in 1987, when Greece took the EC in Athens, us in Yugoslavia were in disbelief? How could anyone outside us and maybe the Soviets be champions? It was an unbelievable Greek generation that opened the path to greater consistency of Greek basketball in the 90s and to this day.
@@bogdanbackup Very true. Only Italy was strong enough and still couldn't compete against them consistently. Those two medals in 1987 and 1989 were out of the blue. Of course timing was essential. A small group of talented players, the homecourt advantage in 1987 that gave us the extra push and of course Galis, the leader that is always necessary to become a champion. After that basketball became the national sport of Greece. Many great coaches and players came in the 90's as a result of the huge amount of money spent in basketball, transformning Greek championship to the hardest and with the strongest competition championship in the 90's even more than Italian or Spanish. I remember Panionios who was a mid level team had as coach Ivcovic and players like Christodoulou, Turner and some other good players. Iraklis had Zdovc and Berry (!!!) and those teams were nowhere near the top. Of course as time passed talented Greek players emerged from that process and a lot of success came but here in Greece all of us know that the beginning of everything goes back in 1987.

The golden age of European basketball...so many great teams and huge players.... just think of the squads each country had...USSR, Yugoslavia, Spain,France, Greece.....If you think about it there were so many great players competing each other at the same time.... Really golden age
@@intersanctum He should have gone directly to the NBA there and then. After riding the bench in Portland, he became slower and less agile. Had he been born 20 years later in the watered down NBA of today he would have become a 30 PPG scorer easily.

I remember this match. I was 6 years old and i watched this match from tv live. İt was a picnic for yugos till last minute and than puff its gone within a minute and some. One of the matches that made me love this game.

Esto no fue un partido...esto fue una "guerra" en toda regla,con todo el contexto de "guerra fría" existente en ese momento y con otra "guerra" por dejar claro quien era el mejor jugador de Europa entre Sabonis,al 100% físicamente y un Drazen Petrovic desatado.Uno mira las plantillas de cada equipo y no podrá repetirse una alineación de ese calibre nunca más,al desmembrarse URSS y Yugoeslavia,Espeluznante!!.
Aunque esta fue la última vez que vimos a Sabonis sin rodilleras, hay muchas sospechas de que aquí ya estaba lesionado. El talón no había roto aún, pero todo parece indicar que Sabonis protagonizó un Kevin Durant 33 años antes, sólo que con la medicina deportiva soviética. La lesión oficial se anunció poco después de este torneo, una historia extraña de una supuesta caída por las escaleras. Pero yo diría que en términos atléticos, el último 100% de Sabonis lo vimos en el Europeo del año anterior, Alemania 85. Si te fijas, aquí ya empezaba a tirar bastante de tres, alejándose paulatinamente de la zona. Cuando hasta el momento, y en realidad hasta el mismo día de hoy, Sabonis era una fuerza dominante que pasaba por encima de sus rivales. But never has scored in the history of Basketball like Galis and never won from Galis the first position of scorers in any international tournament. @@CSLucasEpic no, irónico no. Lógico teniendo en cuenta que Petrovic había escupido en la cara de Fernando Martín cuando este le tendía la mano tras un partido. Luego se nos pasó el disgusto a base de locuras como su final contra Oscar Schdmith Becerra, como se le llamaba entonces. El señorito metió 62 puntos y nos dio una Recopa de Europa. Pero siempre quedó el resquemor entre Drazen y los jugadores del Madrid de los '80.

Hombre, Sabonis acaba saliendo abrazado por el público y dando besos al aire. Todos odiábamos a Petrovic y mas en el Madrid de esos años. Aún me pongo nervioso viendo estos partidos y de mala ostia, por los gestos de provocación yugoslavos, no en este, sino en muchos partidos.

I watched the game as a 16-year old in a pastry shop on the Croatian island resort of Brac... It was well past midnight when the game ended, we were all in shock, tommorrow nobody would speak a word.
We were angry at Divac. He was maybe not to young then for national team, but not for the major plays, but for the bench mostly. Such beginner mistake from Divac.

Ne mogu da zamislim da neko danas stavi 18-godišnjaka na teren u takvim trenucima. Doduše, tu je Dončić, ali su u Realu imali muda da ga gurnu u vatru na vreme. Da je ostao ovde da igra ABA ligu, dobijao bi šansu na kašičicu, i to protiv Krke, FMP-a, Mornara...

En aquella época odiaba profundamente a los Petrovic y por ello me llevé una alegría enorme al ver la remontada de la URSS. Tan grande era el odio que le tenía a Petrovic,(en aquella época era del Madrid de basket), que me hice de la Penya.

Nikad neću prežaliti što cela Yu ekipa nije imala prilike da odigra protiv Amera '92. Duda Ivković je npr i dan-danas uveren da bi smo ih dobili. U svakom slučaju, skinuli bi ih mnogo pre 2002, po mom mišljenju već '96, tada se SRJ dobro držala dok Divac nije dobio 5. faul, a mogu misliti šta bi tek bilo da su tu bili i Kukoč, Rađa, Komazec... Dražen bi verovatno bio živ, jer ne bi bilo potrebe da ide za Nemačku i igra kvalifikacije '93... 😢
@@markomarkovic5729 Pa Hrvatska je pocela gubiti zbog nedostatka snage, nismo imali dovoljno dugu klupu pa cijelu utakmicu. Zato je realno da bi bilo napetije jer u NBA se u to vrijeme nije igrala zonska obrana, a u Europi je.
