Foy Brown makes talking heads. From the 1940's through to the 1970's he was a world famous ventriloquist dummy maker. He worked in Lawrence, Kansas. Each head was hand-carved from basswood. Then they had to be painted and dressed. The process took months. Foy told me he couldn't think of them as figures, puppets or dummies. They were his people. He started as a vaudeville performer with as half of the Foy Brothers. Their mixture of ventriloquism, magic, juggling, and mindreading kept them on the road constantly so carving new dummies was a necessity. Then it became a business. I guess you could say that Foy Brown was famous for putting words in other people's mouth.
This was America in the 1970s.
