I remember. My irish and scottish ancesters have worn kilts at dances. I have miss seeing kilt wearers by dancing with smiles on their faces and with pride too.

I was there that nite, my figures competition was one of the last of the nite. And the next Day, i was first in the first round of the first competition. I got back to the hotel at 12:00 am or so.

@bmhse1irishdancing Yes they had a 40 year celebration parade as well as a 2010 champions parade.

i think when you wear the sparkly dress and big huge wig and makeup it makes you feel like a champion. I love dresses up for feises, but I am a girly girl and could understand if somebody prefered a more natural look. I must admit at times I want to kill my wig. These children are amazing dancers and to reach that level is just amazing. All dancers who get to worlds level or nans are amazing in my eyes

My dance school does not let anyone but champions wear wigs or makeup. They say you may curl your hair if you want but nobody bothers.

@xCestTresChiquex I mentioned my teacher's credentials because she is the one who insisted I wear the wig, fake tan, and super expensive heavy gaudy awkward dress so I would "look the part". Occasionally a wigless dancer does ok, but I personally know people who have lost pts. specifically because their hair wasn't curled. Happily, a new rule has been created that will keep beginners and U11 dancers from wearing the dresses and makeup, because the prohibitive cost has made many people quit.

@MRDANCEX - this isnt during the competition, its the parade of champions. its different.

@xCestTresChiquex Not true. My teacher insisted that I would not place if I did not wear these things because I would not look like I was a serious competitor. She was from Dublin, had placed at Worlds, and had been a previous LOTD dance captain and soloist. You can say it isn't compulsory to wear them, because they of course they will let you compete without the wig and $1000 + dress. Whether they will notice you is another matter. I do agree that all these dancers are amazing, however :)

@lilhunnihannah Acorrding to the CLRG rules, you are not allowed to film during a competition.

You don't wear a wig while you practice and I know that because I'm an irish dancer my self you only wear a wig when you go to a competition

@jyggyhobyt that's good for your teacher - my teacher is Scottish, also a world champion and played a lead role in Riverdance not that long ago but that has nothing to do with my point :) if you say you must must compete with the wigs incase you are not seen as a "serious dancer" then maybe explain the girl in these videos who has won several chamoionchips without wearing a wig : /watch?v=-MihUDSDvNo&feature=channel_video_title /watch?v=gAHoZWp7n3Y those are the ones I can find just now :)

They have also proven that training and the sweat you get for doing so, is healty for your hair and makes it grow stronger and thicker. I would say these dancers pracktis for 3 hours every day till they are soaking wet, and wear those wigs for only 3 hours every second week, maybe 7 hours if its a major competition. Maybe you'll lose some hair if you use a wig every day, but not for an irish dancer at world level.

I used to take Irish step dancing lessons. When did it become mandatory for girls to wear those dreadful curly wigs?
