Cool video, i really liked the map animations. I've never heard of the authagraph projection before, weird looking and i wonder what it's used for. I guess Google maps is inaccurate outside of major cities, I'll have to remember that if I travel around Africa or south America. Thanks for the video 😊

Yea the Authagraph is strange looking but I guess because we are so used to seeing the Mercator so every new projection appears strange. Yeah in Malawi your better off asking the locals ❤

Please tell me what was self centered about producing a 2D map from a 3D sphere? Do you think Mercator did it because it made some countries larger than others... or do you think he did it so there was a map that showed straight horizontal lines (the only lines mariners ware able to follow with a sextant) and saved countless lives? Grovelling sanctimonious virtue-signalling at the expense of genuine virtuous work sickens me.

Really cerebral, balanced view. There must be a better way. Maybe when teaching students, you have to teach about the map or use multiple maps.

Thanks for watching 😊, I would say maybe use the actual globe when teaching in schools, and if not possible there should be an emphasis that each projection is distorted and has a specific purpose

I don't think *_white_* nations made or used the map because it made their countries look bigger. In fact I think that's very racist of you to say so. As you point out there is no entirely satisfactory way to make a 2D map from a 3D sphere. This mercator map shows the latitudes in straight horizontal lines which for a long time were the only marker mariners could use to determine what latitude they were at were with a sextant. It's too easy to blame white people for the things they did - be glad they did make the map.. it helped anyone of any colour from any country. Thank you.

Does “others” mean I 🤔, I clearly said others have criticised. I actually respect Mercator a lot coz of what he was able to do with the resources at his time. I’m simply stating what it is and what others have said about it, I mean people say it’s racist but I stated aswel that south of America and Africa appear larger aswel, who lived there when Mercator made this map?

@@towera I know you said "others" but it is still racist and if you repeat it you continue and spread the racism for them. You wrote about some ignorant comment from 'others' but you did not counter with the real reason why he made it, which was to make the lives of mariners safer by enabling them to follow invisible but relevant lines . Countless lives (of ALL colours) have been saved because of his map. This is a very sensitive time for white people after the pile on that followed the BLM movement and many erroneous histories have been put forward and this creates resentment. Please don't contribute to that.

@@straighttalking2090 Dude, it's a video about how the Mercator projection distorts the true size of countries. The video shows the pros and cons of the Mercator and the Authagraph projections, it's actually very interesting. Don't be so sensitive about it.
