Fire polishing or careful grinding and polishing of obsidian yields a very striking finished piece, I've used Obsidian for years in glaze making to apply on high fire pottery and ceramic forms. Thank you for posting this informative article.
I enjoyed your video more than any other. I could listen to you talk all day, and today I just might. Thank you sharing. Very educational and beautiful rocks.
And just like that.....I have another obsession. As if fire agate and opal weren't nerve wracking enough! You give me.....FIRE OBSIDIAN! Thanks a lot man. 😆😆😆 ❤👍
Oh, I prefer working fire obsidian over working the other fires. I've done a few low grade fire agates but I just never had the bits to do a proper fire agate and opal is very finicky. Fire obsidian is the way to go :)
Thanks for the great education, love that rainbow obsidian, beautiful! Neat stuff behind you on shelves, also enjoy the tunes, your intro is fun, do you have some bloopers to share..I imagine the chair rolling past camera....wooooooo.. lol. Rock on.
This is the best video on obsidian variants I’ve seen. Snowflake obsidian is from northern Utah. The red ribbon lace/gold sheen obsidian often is called mahogany obsidian. But I suppose these come from different locations.
I found some red lace ribbion with a golden sheen, I just found your channel and I'm hoping to learn how to work with the obsidian that I collected years ago. thank you for making these videos 😊
Nice work! Thanks for sharing the light trick. We have been wanting to take a trip to the area and camp enjoy the area as we hunting for the magic stone. Awsome sharing, thanks again!
Really informative video! I loved the piece of Fire that you have, awesome. You can make a doublet for a cab like your thin Fire Obsidian with a common piece of Obsidian as well. You assessing the Fire under water was fascinating, looking forward to seeing what you get out of that stone. I'd love to get my hands on some of that! I'm making a video about Oregon Obsidian right now as well, Glass Butte is like a one stop shop for so many varieties. Thanks for sharing, Cheers!
Thank you! Once I get some customer orders completed, I plan on working on that big piece. I want to make sure to have 100% attention to it so I don't mess it up :)
4:07 that isn't just regular Obsidian, that looks like a HUGE Apache Tear variety, and if you shine on light through it you should be able to see all the way through it. It appears opaque, but when you shine a light through it should be completely transparent. Kind of like a much darker version of Smoky Quartz.
That particular pieces looks like it may not be clear. I can try to find it again out in the pile and grind down the surface to see if it is clear. Finding clear transparent pieces out in the pile is actually very difficult since most of the material I have has some kind of natural inclusions. I do have apache tears in my personal collection.
🤣 Hey! I saw that subliminal message in the fire obsidian. Just found a small piece of green obsidian in my backyard. It's pretty exciting. Well done. Thanks for sharing.
I am glad that you said the claim post is supposed to have the claim dimensions...otherwise, it is a post in the middle of nowhere that tells you nothing. I would hate to trespass on anyone’s claim...but I have to be able to tell.
Very informative, thank you. I have a few different chunks and I will have to do the bucket test for better chances of correct grinding. Will dig into your other videos as well. As far as collecting amounts on BLM land as a general rule its 25 lbs in a day and 250 for a year! Otherwise I believe you need a permit but I think that is only if you intend on selling it. There are loop holes around the selling aspect too. Appreciate your time you put into doing this, its obvious you have a passion for your work..
There are some loop holes for sure. Luckily all the material I have came either from shows, shops, or estate sales so I can sell it at my own discretion without worrying about anything
I have a chunk of that red ribbon obsidian. It was in my moms rock collection. This thing is about the size of a grapefruit and has been rolled around until it’s almost spherical and it’s all beat up. I almost think someone used it as ball in a game or something. I have never seen that green obsidian before! Wow! This video is going to have me more closely inspecting all my other obsidian collection. Lol
A local gem an Crystal shop in my area just got a bunch of new obsidian. I picked up a couple of flakes of green and brown banded obsidian to make into hunting points.
I am intrigued by your statement that Obsidian is not considered to be a rock as it lacks minerals/mineral crystals. Obsidian is classified as an igneous rock born from volcanic activity i.e., eruptions. The silica is super-heated into a molten liquid prior to eruption. When heated silica comes into contact with relatively cold air, it prevents silica from forming crystals in flash-cooled glass.
Is the band that the fire is in allows clear? I have several crates that might have more fire in them but I was unsure how to identify it. So happy to find you!!!
I think I came up with a way to make this, in kilos, rainbow kind, everything, just gotta play around with the periodic table of elements until you come up with a good alloy, and a good manufacturing process, after the fact, I'm like, "I guess it's obsidian...?"
15:30 also at the very top, can't believe you missed that, I thought you were going to point it out but then you pointed at the one you were talking about in the middle
Are the fire layers the same hardness as other layers? Thinking cross section would maybe make stripes of color? Very thorough and educational thank you!
In my experience, its all the same hardness since the layers are super thin and doesn't make much of a difference at all when working on it. If anything, it just adds stress haha If you were to get a cross section, you would be able to see the location of the layers but unfortunately wouldn't be able to see the fire color. You have to either cut at an angle across all the planes of layers OR grind down to just a hair above the layer in order to bring out that color. I plan on working on a piece of fire obsidian for a future video to help show some of that :)
There were so many advertisements during this video. I enjoyed it but wow. I saw six ads by the time I was half way through the video. I don't blame you though. Gorgeous pieces. Do you buy rare obsidian? I have a few really nice pieces if you were interested. Love your obsidian man.
That's weird there were so many ads. I think RU-vid determines how many ads there are on the older videos. For newer videos, I set them myself so there is one or two during the video. I typically have to buy the obsidian either at estate sales or rock shops since finding good material online for a good price is really difficult to do now.
What's up kyle? It's good to see you. Sorry I didn't return your call. Things got hectic for a while. Give me a call. I think you'll know who I am. Awesome video. I couldn't believe it when I saw your face.
Do you have a video for the best way to cut all the different types of obsidian? I've been finding a bunch of amazing pieces and want to cut them, but I dont want to ruin them.
I found some nodules in the black rock desert I'm trying to find information on, they are I believe apache tears but have color play in them where would one be able to get some one to look at them? Or have them polished? I have some really cool big egg shaped ones I'd like to have cleaned up and polished
If you have a local shop, you have have them take a look at them to see what is causing the color play. As far as polishing, if you know of any local clubs or shops that offer lapidary services, you could always try reaching out to them to see what they can do to help polish them.
I work with the fire obsidian and have enjoyed watching you work through problems specific to the material and create interesting solutions. I want to make videos like that and show things I've figured out. If you don't mind sharing, what video editing software are you using?
If you want to make videos, definitely do so! I use Wondershares Filmora for video editing. They have an option for a one time fee and that's the one I went with. And then, for music, RU-vid music library has some free to use music but I just pay for Epidemic Sound. It's like $15 a month and they have a decent selection of sounds and music to use.
Where do you get your burns green and rainbow shooting they look excellent quality! I'm a flintknapper and I love to get a hold of some great quality like that!
You like my comment but I would really appreciate it if you could comment or message me where I might be able to get a small supply of that quality... if available, I'd be willing to trade other stone or I can make you some arrowheads.
Continued: obsidian - lacks crystal formation as it is flash-cooled forming volcanic glass. Different colors actually are from refraction of light similar to rainbow agates. If you have the opportunity, cut obsidian into very thin slice and look at under a polarized microscope specifically used by geologists and you will see the similarities of rainbow obsidian and rainbow agate ;-)
terimakasih atas informasinya tentang ibsidian .sungguh ciptaanNya sangat maha indah .saya juga mempunyai obsidian tetapi masih cantik punya anda .sekali lagi yerima kasih atas ilmunya salam from indonesia
Hi I have a bucket full of the 1st green one you showed can you tell me where it is originally from and what's it use thanks (my garden is full of the stuff . )
Can you please tell me how I found a piece of rough black obsidian here in San Antonio in an undeveloped area? It was a walking trail so I figure someone had to drop it because it doesn’t occur naturally in Texas. Right? It was half buried in the dirt but I dug it out
Could be a chance that someone dropped it or even could be that a native american could have dropped it during their travels. I'm only guessing here :)
@@WorldofRockhounds either way - this piece of obsidian has intense energy - my wife feels it when she picks it up. It made me confront my demons. I’m thankful I found it
You're welcome! and it's very similar with the only difference being that often the color bars of opals are typically thicker. But the material works very similar.
Excellent question, Yes...it is possible. It just takes more time and patience. Have I done it myself, no. BUT it is possible. Just keep in mind you would be polishing glass and it's game of perseverance when trying to remove all the scratches.
Yes and no. Yes you could make a statue out of the fire obsidian material but you wouldn't get the same effect. I think in order to make a wild statue of the stuff, It would nee to be done out of many many pieces that have been specially worked to bring out the color and then carefully fit together to make a statue.

Thanks a lot for this video. I think obsidian isn't clear, least of all a translucent bluegreen. I am sure i got a carved glass pendant. Crying, but now I know. L
You're welcome and not all pieces are easy to identify. Sometimes even just filming the stuff can be a little tricky! If it's a interesting color like blue-green, chances are it's probably glass. But hey, I've seen some beautiful glass pendants before!
I've got Rarer Obsidian, crustal melt/impact gemstone/Supervolcano blends. 😆 and the Gemstones are the size of your head. If you know where they get pushed.
