It was my honour and privilege to die for you Jingles. I did try to thread the needle on those torps but all that focus fire from T10 ships meant it only took the one torp to finish me off. You did extremely well in the Cossack especially for your first game in her.
And he said that he feels bad with for the captain of the Tirpitz, when in fact you were sailing a Bismarck. Oooh Jingles please do not ever change....
11:30: That Tirpitz on your team that sailed in to use your smoke screen looks an awful lot like a Bismarck. You can tell by the way that it says, "Bismarck" above it. Jingles, never change.
You might think that the Cossack might be a controversial ship in Norway, or even seen as a ship that caused Norway to ultimately be invaded by Nazi-Germany. Cossack being controversial in Norway? That couldn't be further from the truth. While at the time it caused a lot of fuss, and was used by the nazis as an exuse to invade Norway (and for some reason also Danmark), they could have used just about any excuse, and the main reason to invade would still be to control the Iron ore transport to germany. They could even have said someone looked at Hitler in a funny way being reason enough. The Altmark incident actually boosted resistance against nazi occupation, and the actions of captain Vian and his crew seen as the decent ting to do against tyranny and oppression. It gave name to the Word "Jøssing". (ø is pronounced as 'ea' would be in "early") this was the name of the anti-nazis during the war, originally used as a swear-word by the nazis against pro-british norwegians, but instead became a popular name by the resistance. The word was eventually banned by the man who invented it in the first place, Vidkun Quisling. His name also became famous, but not in a good way... The Cossack is a famous historical ship in Norway, the Altmark incident is thaught at schools as a part of the mandatory curriculum. I remember I was impressed by the daring and skill the royal navy showed by this and other naval encounters, like the Warspite in the second battle of Narvik. It might have been awkward for the norwegian authorities at the time, but as soon as the occupation began this incident became a positive and morale boosting event. Someone dared standing against Hitler and his forces and show that freedom and liberty where going to win against hatred and tyrany. Cossack is a very welcome addition to World of Warships, I have been waiting for it for a long time. Finally this historic ship has arrived! and the Tirpitz is a Bismarck! :D Erik Aukan
Thanks Erik,Great History of the ship there.I'm pleased that it's still remembered in Norway and it boosted morale at the time.I am amazed that this is still taught in Norwegian schools! I have heard of the Altmark incident and the battles for Narvik as a history student but not in any detail. Thank you again for your knowledge.
paul summerfield your welcome! The history of the fighting in Norway is very interesting has many dramatic stories. The Altmark incident might have been a blessing in disguise if that prompted the germans to attack first. The situation for Norway would have looked completely different if Britain invaded first, triggering a war with Norway. The large Norwegian merchant fleet would then not have supported Britain in her darkest House, maybe even fall into german hands.
@@EA-History A british invasion of northern Norway could have required a pretext of helping Finland in the winter war which would have included getting permission from sweden to transit from Narvik to Torneå by swedish SJ trains. Some maniac in London believed it would be good to seize the Kiruna and Malmberget iron ore mines and then destroy them. A really good way of ensuring that germany would have been able to provide "help" to force the englishman out of Sweden. Which would mean war between Norway and Sweden and England and France ! French trops was included in the could be reinforcement trops to Finland.
Hello, i'm new to this channel, can anyone tell me what is this "I'll just go back to the Salt Mines Now" & other type of comments that i always see's in Jingles comment section please. xD btw sorry for my bad English
The other British carrier hit was HMS Formidable, Jingles. My grandad's ship. And if that British task force didn't come to the pacific to help against the Japanese, well, I wouldn't be Australian. ;)
You beat me to it, I was about to write my own comment about HMS Formidable, my Grandfather also served on her second tour right up till the end of the war in the far east.
I don't know if you have read it but Alarm Starboard by Geoffrey Brooke ends up on HMS Formidible. Love the American observers reply to the argument on British armoured decks after a Kamikaze attack. 'Sir there honey'. Respect to your Grandad. www.goodreads.com/book/show/23828006-alarm-starboard
to be fair the RN carriers in the pacific proved to be more than worth their while as dedicated CAP carriers. while very short ranged in comparison to the US naval fighters like the hellmoggy and corsair, Seafires proved to be exceptional in combat air patrols and interception duties. from Iwo Jima to the end of the war Task force 37 Carriers and their Seafires provided virtually all the fleet defence for the ungrateful prick (William Halsey) and his 3rd fleet allowing American fleet aviation to be used more aggressively and in support of the land offensives
Interestingly, there were a few factors which went into the RN carriers being assigned to Halsey's 3rd fleet. Halsey had been given that duty to essentially get him out of the way. He was far to popular to can, but far too incompetent to keep around. Admiral Nimitz largely saw the RN in the Pacific as a nuisance, just like he did Halsey, and to be fair, Gen. MacArthur as well. Being the consummate gentleman that he was, however, he was not candid about his opinions. So, the RN carriers were stuck with Halsey in support of Gen. MacArthur's land forces. On a more practical note, the RN carriers were given that assignment partly because they lacked the range and underway replenishment abilities of their USN counterparts which would have slowed the American fleets considerably.
When I see a Jingles Video come, up some little part of my brain relaxes and smiles because it knows a fun video completely devoid of politics and hate will divert my attention for 20 minutes or so. Jingles Sir, you make this world a better place.
My uncle Ray was on HMS Cossack when it was torpedoed in Battle of Atlantic. He survived but with terrible injuries including loss is sight in his right eye and paralysed right side of his face.
Unfortunately been having to watch fewer and fewer of your vids just due to changing work schedule. (No more listening to your videos as I walk around smacking printers!) :( you're WoWs vids are still my favourite, and I watch them whenever I can! Please keep up the great work!
Jolly good show, Rear Admiral Jungles and HMS Cossack! Admirable number of points for a premiere mission accomplished without 'The Jingles Effect' and exceptional use of torpedoes and tactics. Also nice of you to mention British carrriers in the Pacific. A nice touch of joint operations after the Royal Navy accepted numerous American Corsair aircraft early on in the war attached to North Atlantic operations. Essentially to teach their American brethren across the pone how to take off, utilize and land the Corsairs for future missions and operations in the Pacific.
Good to hear you talk about the Cossack's background with the Altmark Incident Jingles. One minor thing I can add- Altmark was undoubtedly breaching Norway's neutrality even if she was only a Prison ship, because *Norway's* laws prohibited belligerents moving prisoners through her waters, even if intl law didn't. The Captain of the Altmark had also lied to Norwegian authorities as to the nature of her cargo. Good summary of the events overall :)
15:35 Eh, we should have known better. Trying to maintain our neutrality when the great powers go at it has never worked well for Scandinavia. For instance, it's the reason why Norway changed hands from Denmark to Sweden. (Bit of a long story, but the short version is that when Russia promised Sweden Norway in return for Sweden's help with something or other, no one liked Denmark enough to intervene on their behalf.) Edit: I think it was Russia anyway, though the king of Sweden at the time was a former French general because apparently they decided that was a good idea after the old king died without heirs, this was during one of the Napoleonic wars.
I don't doubt that, I'm just saying that we should have thrown our lot in with the allies as soon as it became clear that the Germans didn't give a damn about neutrality. If our army was actually mobilized and had British support, we might have been able to hold out a lot longer.
No. Technically Germany wasn't violating maritime neutrality even though yes, as Jingles said, it was helping the German war effort. Britain violated Norway's neutrality blatantly and I might add not the first time Britain has broken maritime laws to get what it wanted. Jingles has very cleverly changed the wording so it sounds like Germany were the ones breaking maritime law and Britain simply responded. It might be a technicality but what Germany did was still within the guide lines of written maritime law at the time, what Britain did was not. The whole event is a major reason why Hitler moved on Norway. He knew that Norway's neutrality would not be an obstacle that Britain would abide and Britain would violate any and all laws to see its war effort go unhindered so Hitler, as he saw it had no choice but to secure his sea lines and supply lines through Norway by invading it. Britain had proven their hypocrisy and penchant for breaking international laws on many occasions when it suited them. Hitler decided to take that obstacle away permanently.
Norway was doing quite good, at Trondheim, they manged to slow the Germans quite good down, and was holding them. But there come an reinforcement from UK, a unit with machine guns, something Norway didn't have, they got the task to hold one area, while the Norwegians hold rest.... what the Germans did, was going right true the Brits... sadly. But we had a secret weapon in Norway, it's called: Alta Battalion of the 6th Division, was a battalion to recon with. In that time period the unit was active until the ceasefire come in to action. what the battalion did, was basically totally defeating the Germans in any battle. As an German General commented, after the ceasefire come in to action: After the conclusion of the campaign Eduard Dietl commented that at the time of the Norwegian capitulation his forces would have been able to hold out for only another 24 to 48 hours, after which they would have had to abandon the entire Narvik front and cross into Sweden. This Battalion sounds like something out of a movie, with the perfect sad ending to it, that can have a 5 years later ending.. easily could be among the best war movies, of an battalion fighting in the mountains with Heroes everywhere: en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Alta_Battalion so if Alta battalion performed like that, how would the war have looked like if Norway was fully mobilized... and question we will never get a chance to find out.
Never forget that the British were in fact in the process of executing Operation Wilfred which was intended to provoke Germany into military action by mining Norwegian waters. Then Plan R4, an invasion of Narvik and into Sweden would be carried out, but only after German military action was assured. So Norway was fucked regardless of her actions. And while the Norwegian government were less than supportive of the British mining their waters on the 8th of April (in fact the diplomatic tone was quite serious and Norway demanded the minefield's immediate removal), German forces were already on the way, effectively because they had pretty much guessed the British intentions. Had Germany not intended to invade, it seems the British plan would have dragged Norway in, no matter her own positions. I think we can all agree that Nazi Germany wasn't really someone you could trust very far, and certainly when given a choice, we should hopefully all pick Britain of that day. However that doesn't mean Britain didn't play a very dirty game here, and twice violated a nation's neutrality, once with the intention of forcing said neutral nation into war with Germany.
…I was referring to when Germany bulldozed a couple of neutral countries to get to France. Jingles was very clear that Germany probably didn't violate Norways neutrality. Anyway, I'm not saying we should have sided with the Allies because they were automatically the good guys or anything, they considered invading Norway too. It's just that Germany beat them to it. No, I'm saying we should have sided with the Allies because trying to maintain your neutrality in a world war if you're anyone other than Switzerland typically doesn't work out. I severely doubt Germany was ever going to leave Norway alone.
Dear Mr Jingles: "Fully operational and conducting flight operations again within five hours" (19:41) - that was HMS Victorious. Two things about that ship: - First, as a marine engineer I heard stories about bent propeller shafts and other damage which armored flight decks do not mitigate (but no, that did not stop her completing her mission). - Second, she was also on loan to the US in early'43, in response to a call for help from the USN. That's not all: at times from mid-February to mid-May Victorious was the ONLY effective Allied fleet carrier in the Pacific (the only other US carriers nominally fit for duty had been Saratoga and Enterprise. Various personnel and mechanical issues kept Saratoga out of action and Enterprise was scheduled for maintenance too). So Victorious in particular had a claim on US affections. Based on the unique status of Victorious, and on Fraser's memoir, I'd have to contest the remark about the carrier task force of the British Pacific Fleet being only "tolerated" by the USN. Mind you, Fraser himself remarked that the only reason his carriers were effective in that role was because the American logistic chain could supply him; and I'm sure with sufficient casualties the Americans could have completed their mission.
My father in law served on the HMS Cossack as a radio operator. He was involved in the hunt for the Bismarck and he intercepted a radio call from the Bismarck to help assist locating it. I've seen the HMS Cossack in footage from the battles in Norway and it had some real battle damage as it cruised near the docks in Narvik. He was in hospital ill when she was torpedoed and lost.
I know our might admiral Jingles will never read this but since the Royal navy entered the game I have been waiting for Tribal class destroyers to be places into the tech tree. Due to being part of a sea cadet unit named after a tribal class destroyer H.M.S. Ashanti. It is nice seeing two very well respected and decorated ships of the tribal class represented in the game through the H.M.S Cossack and the H.M.C.S. Haida and I hope and would love to see Jingle do a video on the history of some of the other tribal class destroyers. As many spent a lot of time with Atlantic convoys and several were involved in possibly the worst of the all the convoys PQ16 were tribal class destroyers played a key role. Anyway this is getting long and probably won't get read so. Thanks for the videos Jingles if watched them all and and actually start my basic training for the Royal navy on the 23rd of this month and look forward to trying to keep up with all your amazing content as best as I can.
Captain Urbiewan reporting for duty! My what a pleasent surprise, not only did i have good teammates in that fight, but none other than the overlord, but ofcourse victory was assured! I was a fan before i met you in sweden, and i continue to enjoy all you'r content and i truly hope you will continue to have fun making videos for you'r hard-at-work minions. Fair winds and a following seas /salute.
Y'know, I'm convinced that jingles was the captain of the hood during the battle of Denmark straight based on how bad jingles' identification of ships is
Yes, yes they did, then they taught the US how to do it. But the Corsair made a better fighter used from land bases. Kinda big to carry on a Carrier. Not that we didnt, and the Brits also.
I like that WOWS keeps adding unique ships to the game. Pan-Asian with Deep Water Torpedoes, The Perth and Haida with Creeping Smoke Screens, and the list goes on and on. The Cossask follows that trend of being different from other ships, requiring a different play style and skills. Can't wait to get mine.!
I've heard a lot of armchair admirals give the US undue flak for being thinly armored and giving the UK carriers undue praise for being armored. I'm glad that you pointed out the difference Jingles, it's a matter of performance. The US carriers were able to carry more planes in exchange for lower armor and the UK exchanged planes for more armor. When a US carrier got hit everyone wished they were in UK carriers but the Japanese navy wished there weren't so many damn American planes attacking them all the time. Difference in doctrine not a lack of design as I've heard some folks claim but just a different focus. It's like listening to people on the internet bash the Sherman while placing the Tiger and Panther on this pedestal.
You are right about the British carriers in the Pacific. My late uncle was CMO on HMS Patroller, an escort carrier (known unofficially as a "Woolworth carrier") which served for a while in the Pacific and the Indian Ocean. It had a steel flight deck but no air conditioning and, even though my uncle had got right through the Battle of the Atlantic and some Arctic convoys, on escort vessels, the heat and the noise on Patroller (he never had much chance to get into the open air) saw him invalided home
I did a Pacific cruise in summer on HMS Birmingham, which had air conditioning. It nearly wiped me out. Can't imagine what it would have been like without it.
I take my hat off to those men. He was RNVR and served from 1939-1946, earning the Atlantic, Pacific and Arctic stars. He was sent out in a destroyer retrieved from scrap, after the Bismarck, and the seas were so bad that they were ordered back to port but could not turn as the ship would have capsized. On the Atlantic convoys his ship was usually behind the convoy to pick up survivors, as he was often the only doctor in the escort group. In the Arctic, of course, it did not matter because one only had about two minutes in the sea before death. It wasn't just the heat on the carrier; but the noise of the aircraft, taking off, landing and being raised and lowered, as well as all the other racket which one might imagine. I am surprised that so many held it all together for so long. Bless 'em all!
4 RN aircraft carriers had a total of 8 kamikaze hits not the 2 aircraft carriers as stated in video. Kamikaze hits: HMS Formidable 1 hit on 4th May and 1 hit 9th May 1945; HMS Illustrious 1 hit 6th April 1945; HMS Indefatigable 1 hit 1st April 1945; HMS Indomitable 1 hit 4th May 1945; HMS Victorious 1 hit 1st April 1945 and 2 hits 9th May 1945.
I'd like to add that you can, in addition to the tier 5/6/7/8 tech tree destroyers and the cossack, you can also get the gallant. You mention it when going over the possible rewards for souvereigns, but it's nice to mention in the description perhaps? Since it is in fact a RN (premium) DD and in my opinion a very important reward. I bought it myself, since it effectively is just buying 4500 doubloons instead.
Speaking of got my A class..she's a good ship, I like her,and I'm normally a IJN DD player.. Very reliable, have Jack Dunkirk assigned to her..(10 point). I like her guns.. accurate, fast training, good rate of fire, and she can choose twixt HE or AP. If the rest of the UK DD's are anywhere as good as this ship..oh yea, you RN types should be very very pleased!
Loved hearing you talk about the history of Cossack. Already knew it all but it's nice having you give us your take on it mate. Used to get a lot more history from you on ships and tanks but that has dwindled a little this year I think. Managed to get acasta yesterday and hoping for another DD today. Got to admit I'm loving acasta for a tier 5 she is a really strong DD. when I get cossack I am going to try something with it's smoke. using my Jack dunkirk (will get bert too) with the perk on smoke screen expert plus smoke mod 1 I wonder if the smoke will end up being similar to haida's where you get the creeping smoke. curious if any one with cosack has tried this yet?
This has been another edition of "Brown Alerts and Story Time with the Mighty Jingles." Please join us next time for more exciting endeavors of historical Royal Navy vessels and their perilous adventures on the high seas.
Absolutely loving the British Destroyers. I've got Acosta and Iccarus so far. Rotating with Gallant, I've smashed through the event missions. Excellent destroyer hunters and skirmishers.
Norway didnt care if someone hit german forces since germany started the war. And quite hard to sail from germany to atlantic without going thrue swedish, danish or norwegian waters/skagerak. Even thou norway called itself neutral it could not fight/defend itself more than a day or 2, so germany just sailed in and walked onto land. There was more resistance after germany had taken over norway than what germany met the first days taking norway. No wonder norway was screwed during ww2 since we made something important at Rjukan: heavy water. en.m.wikipedia.org/wiki/Norwegian_heavy_water_sabotage . And norway dont have its own royal family (king/queen) our king is danish.
2 unseen Jingels moments.. calling a Bismarck a tirpitz and "sending 3 torps to the Hindenburg and one to the Yamato".. No jingles.. It was the other way around
The US was the star of the show in the Pacific because they specifically made sure it was that way. Halsey deliberately excluded British aircraft from Third Fleet's last strikes against the IJN. "At Mick Carney's insistence I assigned the British an alternative target. Mick's argument was that although this division of force violated the principle of concentration, it was imperative that we forestall a post-war claim by the British that [they] had delivered even part of the final blow that demolished the Japanese fleet."
Nice vid. Sorry I missed the explanation of the event. Somehow I didn't get it despite my Subscription. Lots of swag given out during the event. But as for the Cossack, you my keep your Guineas, " I wish to have no connection with any ship that does not sail fast; for I intend to go in harm's way."
As I'm watching Notser's video on Cossack I get a message saying Jingles released his. It was as if Jingle's was yelling "Hey ho get your money maker over here and quick turning tricks elsewhere" lol
I'd say it's still an important difference in the game though, since one has torpedoes and the other doesn't. That is somehting that should be considered in many situations.
I just found out there's a sea story involving cossack and the bismarck. After sinking the bismark they took on the ship cat named Oskar aboard hms cossack, the cat survived not only the sinking of the bismarck and the cossack but also later the sinking of carrier hms Ark Royal. After that sailors refused to take the bad luck cat on board :D funny to know seeing the bismarck sorta tried to save you in this video
Jingles today i dreamed that i was walking down the street with two glasses of water in my hand singing "We are the champions" And suddenly i turned a corner and saw you just standing there, laughing and surrounded by a bunch of students. And then i started running towards you, the song still playing in the background and i missed you by like half a meter, hit a fence and dropped the glasses. I turned around, started running again and would have missed you a second time if you didn't grab me by the shoulders and hugged me like i have never been hugged before. Like the father i always wanted. I woke up with tears in my eyes.
Oh mighty Overlord and fellow salt miners I only need our beloved Grand Old Lady HMS Warspite to complete my childhood dream fleet of historical significant ships Shall I buy the containers or go for her directly instead? May the Queen and our Lord help me decide which option is best
I would say the British Pacific Fleet played an important role during the Okinawa operation; they kept the Japanese in the southern Ryukyu islands occupied
My first RN crate got me the Icarus (T6) mission. I am happy since I am in the middle of leveling my port to a T6 minimum across the board. T7 and 8 would be a bonus and T5 would be liquidated for spending cash. That was the project I took on when we started +200 exp days.
in re the RN being "tolerated in the interest of international cooperation" in the Paciic, you've said it yourself more than once, Jingles: teammates are good, they give the enemy someone else to shoot at. ;)
I will admit that the Cossack has a one turret advantage over the Haida's main gun battery, but, in place of the Cossack's X turret, the Haida has a single secondary mount with two 102mm DP guns. As secondary batteries cannot give away the ship while in a smoke screen, it gives the Haida player something to watch as more torpedoes are loaded. The secondary battery of the Haida also allows a chance for the Haida to do some damage as the player steers round a promontory and spots too many enemies at too short a range to be able to anything besides play "World of Turtles". On a side note, the only thing worse than seeing 'you had no accomplishments' (I think that was the gist of the text and I never want to know the exact wording if I must epic fail to see them again) on the personal results screen is being penalized for leaving a battle early when your client crashes.
Wasn't the Altmark instructed by the Norwegian government to sail around a particular area off the coast of Norway, and they promptly ignored that request and sailed right through the restricted area? After they refused to be inspected by Norwegian officials, too.
Jingles.. great vid as always but I note you never actually did a review for the HMS Gallant that I can see? As that was my grandad's ship I've got a soft spot for it needless to say and would love to see a video on it if you fancied revisiting it (now seems a good time given the Royal Navy Arc ;)) Nudge nudge ;)
I like watching Warships and it's videos, but i have grown to hate playing it. The amount of grind required is just unfeasible for me to combine with a fulltime job. It's almost as bad as an MMO. And anytime a game introduces even more fake currencies the gaming gods die a little more.
Ah, British carrier names. HMS Illustrious, HMS Indefatigable, HMS Indomitable etc. Personal favourite: light carrier HMS Unicorn. But the prize either goes to the post war Weapon-class destroyers (such as HMS Battleaxe and HMS Broadwsord) or the old Erebus-class battle monitors. HMS Erebus being named after the Greek chaotic god of darkness and HMS Terror being named for... well... being terrifying.
I have to say that the mine-laying by the Brits of Norwegian ports didn't help too much on the "friendly" impression the Brits gave in 39-40. When Norway was attacked by the Germans the King was told about the attack and his first response was "By whom?" At that time it was an open question who would attack: The Brits or the Germans. Later, of course, this changed drastically.
Some things I'd like to see: a. For all arena games, optional post-match award ceremonies so people on both teams can actually talk about the match. Also, remove the instant cutoff at the end of the match. b. Snorkels on WOT. Tanks moving underwater are camouflaged. c. Tropical island maps in WOT. d. Submarines in WOWS should have small single-shot nuclear weapons.
Well, I've done all available nine missions of stage I & II, so nine containers and no DD missions yet. I really dislike the RNG nature of getting these ships. Same thing happened with the French release, the only one I ever got was Bretagne despite maxing out on all the missions.
Some interesting marketing techniques. How to you lure people who normally never part with RL cash to be tempted to make the leap. Make the leap really small. Now their card details are stored it makes it oh so tempting to buy some more stuff!
I believe that the boarding of the Altmark was the last time the royal navy issued boarding cutlasses to the boarders, obviously the Captain was a fan of Cpl Jones!
I was wondering what are these nice pictures linked by the mission tab on the left side of the main screen, because there was no explanation whatsoever what do they mean, as they interact ewith nothing. The same with the British DD missions, as there are no british DD line on the tech tree...Thank you very much for your help on this matter. I would prefer more direct in-game explanations though...
IJN torp boats need a break, single launch torps could be a good bandage for line or ships already at the bottem of the barrel. That or increase reload speed.
