Correction: Meant to say California not North Carolina when talking about ships being refloated at Pearl Harbor.

Oh yeah regarding the "Why did so many navies around the world keep their older battleships in service from 1920-1940+?", Drachinifel did a pretty stellar video on the subject not too long ago. It mainly boils down to yes keeping up a considerable military presence throughout the timeperiod, but also because of the Great Depression in the 1930s. Not a lot of money left to go around + the need to maintain a navy of some size and firepower meant that a lot of navies opted to keep costs low by retrofitting their older ships instead of building new ones. It worked out great for some (USN and IJN in particular), not so much for others (RN and most of their retrofitted battlecruisers in particular suffered. Queen Elizabeth class was an exception though.)
@dy031101
@dy031101 2 года назад
The QE class were the ideal fast battleships of their time and less constrained by cost or treaty requirements. Perhaps it makes sense that they cope better with the future than the Revenge & Nelson classes and battlecruisers pressed into battleship actions.
@MattVF

It was lack of refitting that was the issue. Hood only got a “major repair” between 1929-1931 (which was partly why HMS Tiger made it to the 30’s”),Repulse was up armoured in the early 20’s and was warmed over in the 30’s. Renown was the only battlecruiser that recieved a substantive rebuild. Of the battleships only 3 of the 5 Q.E’s were rebuilt with Malaya and Barham receiving “halfway house” refits. Indeed Barham was considered for sinking in Tripoli harbour such was her perceived value by Churchill. The ‘R’s simply lacked the space for an effective rebuild and lacked the stability of the Q.E’s. All they got was rough cut armour added to there decks. Both Rodney and Nelson needed a big overhaul - Rodney especially. Funds were exceptionally tight during the 20’s and 30’s. Add in the loss of industrial infrastructure and you see why Britain struggled to get the fleet ready.

Colorado I made sure I had the Blue XP booster + premium time to get through. I have to say as someone who has been playing since Open Beta back in 2015, Colorado is _way_ easier to play now than it was back then. Her ergonomics, gun characteristics, acceleration with the help of the module, and turning, + the fact they removed her 1920s stock hull (Does ANYONE remember that?) make her a lot easier to use now than she was way back when. These days her low speed is literally the only thing that makes her such a terrible ship to play. Her guns are fairly consistent in my experience and the 406s punch well enough for her to at least be usable in tier 9. I have her sister WV'41 and the fact that it only gets uptiered up to tier 8 makes such a huge difference. I guess it's also the tough spot WeeGee find themselves in considering IRL she was the last Battleship class the US built prior to NC. Maybe they should give her an extra sped buff to just make this whole issue go away? I don't know.

Keep at the struggle if you’re going down the fast battleship line, the rest of the line is really good after colorado. If you’re going down fattleships, DONT. Massive slow floating Ls that take the pros and cons of the colorado, amp them to 11 thanks to higher tier, and tell you to deal with it.

@jammo7370
@jammo7370 2 года назад
@@Fitzwalrus06 Vermont doesnt seem worth the grind at all. The only things it has going for it are the guns and the HP pool. Your hull is so massive and slow that you are a living HE and torp magnet, and you DONT have the maneuverability to dodge anything. The acceleration buffed helped a bit, but it's not enough. The long range pen nerf also does not help the ship at all, since the slow speed means you're going to be struggling to close the distance to make use of the improved close range pen. In almost every situation there is another ship I'd rather have than a Vermont. Namely Kremlin is better than Vermont at almost everything it wants to do, apart from shooting at long range, but the Vermont's pen nerf equalizes that a bit.
@Fitzwalrus06
@Fitzwalrus06 2 года назад
@@jammo7370 I wouldn't just dismiss Vermont out of hand. I play US standard BBs a lot so I guess I'm used to "big and slow", but even so I found Vermont to he surprisingly maneuverable all things considered, and with twelve 18" guns it hits like a truck once you get on target. Of course if the Reds focus fire you you're going to die, but that's true in any ship. I don't play T10 a lot, but I usually have a fun time in Vermont when I do. To each his own, I guess.😉

I had nothing but fond memories of the Colorado when I was still new to Warships when I was grinding my way up the American BB line. Really hammered home of getting the best position to project your power while the slow speed always kept me out of trouble of overextending. And considering how maneuverable she is, she just laughs at DDs trying to torp her. No joke, there was a game where I occupied 2 of the 3 enemy DDs to try and torp me, that my team's DDs had free reign over the entire map. But since she has decent range, I still managed around 150k damage on that game with none of the torps hitting me.

The Colorado was originally a brawler. It still shines at tier in that role, but the meta has changed. Its current strength is on the smaller maps with close together caps, where it can position between two caps and provide 16inch hate to both. Then, when rushed it does what it does well: brawl. Proper angling is key in those situations. That said, the best part of the Colorado is the North Carolina.

I actually had very good games in the Colorado. I read up on Colorado when I was about to start the US BB line, so I was ready to free xp it. People seem to dislike it as much the old Izumo. If you watch people play it you learn what not to do very quickly. I'm sure everyone's seen the Colorado player that spends 8 mins going out on the 1-2 line flank. The other side dies and he's pretty much zoned himself out for the next 10 mins trying to rush back with everyone raging in game chat "hurry up" "useless BB". I played Colorado kinda middle map waiting for broadsides, got through it no grind what so ever. Armour is decent and the guns can chunk 20k.

DONT FORGET ABOUT THE BRISK SKILL! long as your undetected you get a 10% speed boost (IE good for getting into position or repositioning, or running away), That plus the speed flag should get you up to 24 ish knots by my off hand math. Anyway as someone that ground though the US Battleships (up to the Iowa), the Colorado is pretty meh far as a grind in the game, it just takes time. As noted: 8, 16inch guns (overmatch, decent dispersion and good reload time), layer upon layer of armor to protect the citadel thanks to the ALL or NOTHING armor scheme (hard but not impossible to citadel), US dreadnaughts have very tight turning circles, and while i can agree 21 knots is SLOW, it keeps you from over extending. It could be worse! (Oklahoma 18 knots speed, you need brisk to get to 21 knots). The US BB line teaches you alot of things about playing a battleship.
@22louki
@22louki 2 года назад
This was my first line back to 2015, when the only battleship lines were either IJN or USN... i have faded memories of this grind and the game is much different now, but i remember that New Mexico and New York was the real pain. With colorado, you got range, accurate guns and decent AA, i dont know if it has the best BB AA till today but i am sure it is not horrid... Do u know what is written in my mind though? Me in a New mexico playing on the ocean against tier 7 hiryu...imagine the pain making circles with a 20 knots BB in order to avoid been striken by cv(cv's could easily kill you in one-two go's back then) and the enemy cv typing in chat that he has more planes... Imagine a ship with 12 guns to not be able to hit reliably targets at 7 or 8 km's and to have to grind 3 hulls for it...imagine a ship starting the game and being forced to go straight or it would be become irrelevant, imagine a ship completely defensless against dd's... anyway... no i am not trying to say that Colorado is the best ship ever, i cant stand being so slow either, but in other aspects its pretty good ship... Do u know what i trully miss though? when we could build Full AA builds with American battleships and be effective.... you may laugh at me nowdays but if you are old player, and especially cv player you may understand how hard was to strike Iowa or NC I never understood why the nerfed USN AA and btw i am not US fanboy or something i am not even American i did not even know what Missouri is before i start the game...but i used to love NC and Iowa for this.. and their great design

Even now New Mexico is the true struggle boat of the line (unless you’re doing fattleships, the entire line is a walking L). Terrible hull like the colorado, but does not have the benefit of big guns. Sure it has a lot of them, but they couldn’t hit the broad side of a barn if it was rubbing against it. And at tier 6 a lot of other battleships are starting to get decent, lizzie is pretty good, fuso is great at the tier, izmail is just you but better, not to mention premiums that just dumpster the new mexico like mutsu, warspite, w virginia, hell the arizona really is just new mexico but better.

Stay quiet, stay dark and act like a floating log. Sooner or later that T9 cruiser will show you broadside, just like the wildebeest coming down to the river bank to get a drink. Bam! First Blood, Dev Strike and 35k damage. That’s your game done. Even if your team throws harder that Nolan Ryan, you made XP and credits. Just rinse and repeat. The Colorado was rough when I went through it but the guns on it were pretty good. I disliked the Izumo (back then) more, though... actually used a big chunk of freexp to get out of that one. The original Furutaka was horrendous. I found the Italian DD line a fairly painful grind.

I grinded british CAs recently and jesus fucking christ the line is painful until T9. I find the goliath decent and reasonably fun to play, but man the albemarle is probably the most painful ship I’ve had the displeasure of grinding through.

And yet, I still have my Colorado, and take it out of port from time to time. People underestimate this vessel due to all the public hate for it. Like any other ship placed in competent hands, it can be very deadly. I've always done rather well in her.

Some corrections to your Pearl Harbor lore- Maryland wasn't sunk, mostly because she was protected from torpedo strikes by Oklahoma which was moored outboard. (Maryland was actually the 2nd least damaged BB after Pennsylvania- I think she only took a couple bomb hits) and Colorado's refit was taking place at Bremerton, not California :)

So, do you know what the "benefit" of so called "turbo" electric drive was... Electric motors "spin up" very fast and the "gearbox" that connects them to the drive shaft allows them to get a prop up to max rpm a lot faster than a steam turbine, it also allows max rpm and very quick changes forward to reverse, the USN liked them because they were compact but these were the fringe benefits. You know what the benefit of a short fat hull (low length to beam ratio) is MANEUVERABILITY. The Colorado's should be very maneuverable (relative to other Battleships) they should speed up, slow down and turn better than any other battleship tier for tier, that was the benefit of this short fat ship with electric drive. In the game the ship has the terrible penalty of this drive system (pathetic 21 kts top speed) but without the actual benefits.

Colorado is one of my most consistent BBs and I've won games just from being able to survive with the improved heal and turning circle. There are moments I think "I could've landed that shot in Nagato," but there are moments I also think "I would've died by now in Nagato."

When I used to play World of Warships, don't anymore for various reasons (primarily the fact I see more fake ships in game than real, hell a lot of them are even faker than proper paper ships that at least had blueprints), the first time through the Colorado I hated the ship. Picked it up like a year after I'd grinded past it and loved the ship for some reason. I can't explain why but when I initially played it the guns felt awful, the armor felt pointless, and the speed was (and still is) awful. But then I picked it up again and suddenly the guns felt pinpoint accurate, devastating, and refreshing even after playing mainly my Iowa and Montana. The armor also felt a hell of a lot more usable than I remembered.

I think they keep their speeds to consistent for marketing. "See, we are historically accurate. We were even willing to dock a ship's speed by half a knot to make it more accurate. Just don't look at those russian battleships."

I'm enjoying that grind as we speak. I had to do the propulsion upgrade just to get to battle in time to score any damage. Apparently 8 years away from the game has made me incapable of decent play. The only thing I can win is co-op battles. Everything else, I can't even break even in. I should probably just quit again.

Appreciate the video. Trying to figure out how to have a good game in this ship. Noting that it is not necessarily easy even with a player of your caliber, as stated in your narrative. Noting that I am not “grinding”, ran up the whole line a year or two ago and not resetting anything, not ever. Did not sell it, so just trying to justify that decision. Checking with WoWS Fitting Tool, the guns have slightly less penetration at range but slightly better ballistics than the North Carolina guns. Probably a slightly lighter AP shell. I.E., good guns, particularly at Tier VII. Also better than Sinop, but beware Vlad the Impaler at Tier VIII. You make a good point about transitioning to greater speed going up the Tiers from Colorado. It is also a factor when returning to the Colorado after playing mostly higher Tier battleships for awhile. Size of the maps is a big factor: lower tiers get smaller maps, mitigating the speed issue with most of the Standard Bathtubs in the game.
