RIP Karl. Saw world party in '95. One guy shouted from the audience "play ship of fools , you crazy Welsh bastard" he laughed his head off...and played it. Brilliant live
@@andrewlamb7012 2 major floods in 11 years here in Brisbane. “Rain Bomb” they called it. Then there’s the floods in Sydney and Lismore. Scott Morrison and his cronies are fools on the hill! Time is running out for climate change action!!
@@spello8191 ""the rain that falls isn't actually going to fill our dams". Tim Flannery 2013 - Brisbane an Lismore are built on ancient flood plains and have been flooding like this for over 100,000,000 years.
RIP Karl. No hyperbole, but he really was something of a visionary and an astonishingly gifted musician and songwriter. Thank you for such a rich canon of brilliantly crafted songs that remain so fresh and imaginitive.
Music and the brain is weird. I hadn’t heard this song for many many years, but just yesterday I was listening to a podcast that played this song in one of their interludes, and I instantly recognised it.
RIP Karl Wallinger!! Passed away this Sunday, March 10th, at age 66. Loved him and loved this song. Can’t tell you how many times I played it over and over and over. Still a classic. Very sad…
I've always found the song structure to be brilliant. I LOVE the way the bridge swells up and overlaps into the chorus. It's like a wave sweeping up and pushing you in.
Loved this song when I first heard it. Years later I understand what it truly means. Thank you Karl and band for your strength and bravery in releasing a song like this. RIP, you've done well.
This song had such a profound impact on me as an 8-year-old in 1987. It helped to set my sail on the path I am on - one where I think for myself, do right by others and not consume myself with all that glitters in this world. In the end, it all fades away anyway. There is only one thing that matters, and I try to live my life by that. It isn’t a path for the faint of heart. But the wealth that lies in the end is far greater than any treasure here on Earth. Whenever I feel myself letting go, I start singing this song to myself and it sets me right. Thank you for this wonderful song, Mr. Wallinger! I hope you found the peace you so richly deserve in the hereafter that we all strive for on this Earth. Your song is an anthem for those of us who know what is right and what is wrong and do our best to keep on the right side of the line between.
He could see instrumental and lyrical song structure so clearly ,a true musical genius and now sadly missed but who has left us with some truly great songs
So good to see the outpouring of love in the wake of news of his passing. An extremely talented guy who seemed to always run into tough breaks in life and found far less success than he deserved. The prescience of this song is what makes it ever more relevant as time goes by and the time to "pay" for all these fools nears. RIP the great Karl Wallinger
Ahhh, another one that's bought into the scare mongering of the neo marxists... I suggest you actually look into just how much the western world has done to alleviate environmental problems before you go thinking we're all doomed. BTW, in 1987 there was NO mention of climate change or global warming, the issue back then was 'holes in the ozone layer' which also turned out to be a nothing burger... but a lot of politicians made a lot of money ridding the western world of CFCs.
Infinity more relevant now than 87. Back then we had optimism and innocence. Look at what has happened in the 21st century starting with 9/11 and the e-comerce bubble bursting, followed by everything else that happened this century. Back in 1987 I would not have wanted to see what we have seen this century
(TRUTHFUL) It's like they have swallowed arrogance without knowing it's cause an effect. So then continue to do so , with drunkenness . The blind will continue to lead the blind . Sadly they refuse an awakening of higher awareness to their perceptions .
This song is so underappreciated. The content is prophetic & the rhythm moves seamlessly. The flow is addicting & feels almost otherworldly. Fantastic song & definately not forgettable. If you aren't moved by this song you need to check your pulse!
I will sorely miss Karl Wallinger and his wonderful band World Party. He was a great songwriter and musician. I had the albums when they first came out in the late 1980s early 90s. I remember listening to the cassettes on my walkman all through Italy while traveling on the trains. Thank you Karl. You were beautiful.
Ive heard this song a million times, ive been aware forever....and the talent this man brought, the meaning, the class of music, is amazing to me. I hope people keep listening to karls messages forever. R.i.p superstar. Rock em up there. ❤
This is one of music's greatest underrated songs of all time. Relevant always because the rich will rich and the poor will poor and that's been humanity forever. Musically, perfection. Layers upon layers of sound, voice, beat, instrumentation, rising, falling, lyrics... A perfect song. ❤️

I'm late to the party, discovered this song a few months back, top 5 all time....incredible all these years listening to music there are still some unheard gems like this, shows how important it is to listen to a wide variety and whole albums....still lots to discover
This is a great song by an underrated band. Who knew that something written & recorded in 1987 would be even more relevant today. Forget the 80s clothes & the odd camera tricks & watch the film showing behind the band. It is absolutely spot on.
What's amazing is that, despite how it looks in the video, World Party isn't even a band. It's really just one guy, Karl Wallinger. The others come and go as needed. Amazing guy, Karl.
Wow!! This will date me but I listened to this song when I was around 15 yo back in the 80s. I loved this song even tho I was all into gothic music back then. Totally different from what I normally liked but I just loved it first time I heard it. Glad you're enjoying it! So good!
Myself included on the part where I was a ripe old 17 years old when I used to spin this tune! Back then I was into the likes of Bob Segar and then types but World Party and this song just wormed into my ear and it was like my own little personality tune that seemed create meaning in my whirlwind lifestyle back then. Now I relate to others in the fact that when I hear the words and this rhythm that World Party creates I'm so glad I did and songs like these I can belt out word for word so easy!
Hooked with water boys, caught in the Party. Heavens chorus will add to its harmony . My heart was broken when I heard the news and now my keyboard is stained with tears. This song was playing when I fell in love with my wife and they saved me from tomorrow( GBJ.)......
Had a sudden urge to listen to this song this morning! God i love the internet lol no wonder it's addicitve! Instant dopamine hit with songs like these! 😍
World Party - Ship of Fools - this song came out in 1986. But it was one of the songs playing on the radio the day I moved up to Canada back in July 1987. Good song. ❤
Just stumbled on this hit.I heard it on Sirius XM radio on “MTV Big 40 Countdown” doing this hit from the Billboard Top 40 back in 1987.Have this hit on repeat in my playlist and everything that’s happening in this country resonates with this song.I’m 61 and not tired of this song at all.
More like the anthem of the legions of overconfident dopes who can't see that they're being led into chains under the cover of one obvious ruse after another. What will the dupes fall for next? Any lie their masters tell them.
One of the many classic 80s tracks you just don't hear anymore. As for the band many will scratch their head, who. Pure class, just like the 80s music. Never get that back!
Exactly written TheTwintosser, this wasn't a hit in fact the odd time I'd catch it on radio here in Ontario Canada but every single time I played this cassette back then I cranked it and sang out loud!
I bought this on one of the first CD singles ever released as a double a-side with Private Revolution in 1986. In July I finished school and went to California for 6 months and one day while watching MTV saw this video for the first time and was blown away when I spotted our previous house and garden that we had moved from just months previously! It turned out that World Party had squatted in the house, turned my parents bedroom into a recording studio and filmed both videos there. Private revolution was filmed entirely in our garden under the ancient Cedar tree (that has now sadly been cut down), with Sinead O’Connor on keyboards
Karl Wallinger was a brilliant singer/songwriter since leaving the Waterboys. World Party would have to be one of the most underrated bands in their time. Still love a majority of their songs.
i was the MUSIC DIRECTOR and 89-WBSU-FM "Morning Man", 1984-85, and I remember when I first heard "WHOLE OF THE Moon" by the Waterboys.....Great music...Great Writers and Musicians
When I first heard this song I was a young man of 27,naive and somewhat indifferent to the message. I must admit but after 35 more years of living I hear ya man I hear ya.
We're setting sail to the place on the map from which no one has ever returned Drawn by the promise of the joker and the fool by the light of the crosses that burned. Drawn by the promise of the women and the lace and the gold and the cotton and pearls It's the place where they keep all the darkness you need. You sail away from the light of the world on this trip, baby. You will pay tomorrow You're gonna pay tomorrow You will pay tomorrow Save me. Save me from tomorrow I don't want to sail with this ship of fools. No, no Oh, save me. Save me from tomorrow I don't want to sail with this ship of fools I want to run and hide right now Avarice and greed are gonna drive you over the endless sea They will leave you drifting in the shallows or drowning in the oceans of history Traveling the world, you're in search of no good but I'm sure you'll build your Sodom like you knew you would Using all the good people for your galley slaves as you're little boat struggles through the warning waves, but you don't pay You will pay tomorrow You're gonna pay tomorrow You're gonna pay tomorrow Save me. Save me from tomorrow I don't want to sail with this ship of fools Save me. Save me from tomorrow I don't want to sail with this ship of fools Where's it comin' from? Where's it goin' to now? It's just a It's just a ship of fools
Slint❗🍀 ..a friend sent me this song link... lots said in this,song... thank you Slint👍 for the lyric... help a lot to understand this songwriter concerns
Man, what a totally epic song this is. Gotta be one of the best songs of the period. And how prescient are the lyrics ? A song thirty years ahead of its time. Well written, well performed. Brilliant.
As a musician, and a New Orleanian, this song for some reason has a NOLA feel to it to me. World Party had such a creative chemistry and this song in particular was way ahead of it's time.
I work at a little mom and pop diner and this song plays on the radio all the time there and it’s sooo good that I can’t help but hum along with it whenever it comes on, really gets your feet a’tapping
Still holds up. Class .... Never got the recognition they deserved.... Brilliant band. A fine anthem for our world today, perhaps even more so than it was in '87.
Karl Wallinger, you're a genius, and you wrote songs that have been such an important part of this journey for me. This song touched something deep inside my soul and possibly does so even more today, knowing that the world hasn't actually listened and done something about the plight the world faces today, possibly more so than it did back then in 1987, when I first heard it.
