Why are people always saying, Anyone listening in (present year) ? As long as you're still digging the band, why do you need to know if anyone else is still in the same boat? I still listen to tons of music years later, but I don't need to ask if the bands are still relevant, because I think they are still great. Haha, sorry but I guess I'm just tired of watching the same comments everywhere.
Not only are The Smithereens one of the best and most underrated bands in history, they are also some of the nicest and most down to earth guys in the world. I had the pleasure of meeting Pat DiNizio, Jim Babjak and Dennis Diken. Three truly great guys who love music, love each other and their fans. RIP Pat you will always be missed. Thank you for excellent songs such as "A Girl Like You" A true Rock and Roll classic.
I’m still listening to the ‘Reen’s in 2023. You’re right they were some of the nicest guys. I’m lucky to have been My Uni Activities Director, so I tried to get the very best. I got some great artists, but sadly not these guys☹️
their sound was super awesome, but i think the look was too 80's too soon, 20, 30 years later looks like personality, but only 10 years later it looks dated.
In late 1990 they played outside at our Auburn fraternity house. We fed them, helped set up, etc and they were the best to hang out with. The concert was incredible and the rain didn't bother the band or audience. That night will always be a college highlight!
@@TH3DANKs *_Maria Vidal_* sang backup vocals on "A Girl Like You", not Belinda Carlisle. Belinda sang backup vocals on their song "Blue Period" from the same album, "11". 🕊
I had a great band in high school back in the 80's. was so much fun. we got whatever drummer we could find and it was great. I had a buddy that was killer on drums.. whenever he played with us, w were the greatest. Drummer more important than anyone else...froma fellow jersey band!
This song was supposed to be in the movie "Say Anything", but the movie producers wanted Pat DiNizio to change the song. He refused and the song wasn't used in the movie. Bravo for sticking to your guns Mr. DiNizio, the song became a hit anyway. RIP, you were a legend and the true "Boss" in my book.
@@davidg1612 I heard that Cameron Crowe asked them to write a song for the movie, but this song gave away too much of the plot, so he went with In Your Eyes instead.
You're leaving out an important element from that story. The song was written FOR THE MOVIE, not a pre-existing song the producers plucked from obscurity. The song was inspired by the script. Producers thought the lyrics were too on the nose and asked him to change it.
The bass lines of The Smithereens are mixed so high they sound like a Power Pop trio. I've always loved their bass-driven songs, and I wish they had received the success they deserved. More than just a "bar band," I think.
The Smithereens, forget about it, these guys were to me the most unlikely rock stars, yet they sounded like music's best. They were beyond great! I am still listening to them in 2021.
you bet yer ass I am...The following tone is a reference tone of 700 Hz, the remainder of the tones are recorded at this level with the exception of the last tone, which is a reference tone at operating level. You got that?
Leaving Candlestick Park after the Giants beat the Cubs, NLCS on a balmy S.F. night in October, 1989 this song was playing on the radio.....great time in my life!
I think it was classified at Alt Rock or Indie Rock because of the time period they were playing in. I loved the Smithereens when I was in the NAVY back in the day
In 1993 my then-boyfriend (later husband) asked me to go to a concert they were doing in downtown Dallas. I turned him down because I was scheduled to work. To this day I regret not calling in sick. This song is the best!
And.......I thought that I....was the quote queenie....but once(Only Once Tobe ) I again am Sadly Mistaken you tooken dah prizes nice work dig IT peace Tobes
The Smithereens always struck me as the World's Greatest Bar Band. Straightforward music, clever lyrics when you listen to them, deeper than you would expect on all counts, but somehow grounded and there for the fans in front of them. Damn do I miss them
@@lenurban Pat DiNizio (lead singer) died on 12/12/2017 in Summit, NJ at the age of 62. No cause of death was ever provided (according to an article I just read), but he was reported to have had numerous health issues and injuries prior to his death.
I was in a band called the Resistors, One Sunday night in the 1980's we warmed up for the up for Smithereens in Memphis when "Behind The Wall Of Sleep" was number one or two on the charts. The Fire Marshall almost shut the place down due to overcrowding. Great gig for us. Smithereens killed that night!
I was up at State College PA, during their hey day, and these guys got ME laid all the time. There were So many cover bands that you couldn't not get laid, the chicks LOVED THIS SHIT!!!!!!
I saw Smithereens twice, once when I was in my younger days, blitzed out of my mind one night in a small club, blown away by this awesome band I had never heard of, and again about a year or so before Pat passed away. Can't believe he's gone, loved these guys.
Wow... I had the exact same experience. Saw them back in my college days in the late 80's at a small club. Didn't really know much about them before that show, but they become one of my all time favorite bands that night. Got to see them 7 or 8 years ago as an opening band for some headliner. Can't remember who the hell they opened for, but I remember that the Smithereens stole the show!
This band is having fun here with the song!!!! Good song by the way!!! Love the dancing bass player!!! We have afew of them here in America and appreciate them all!!!😊🤘🤙👍
Actually, it seems to be a pretty bland and boring pop rock tune. There is far more interesting music out there, both from the same era as this song, as well as before and after that era.
Bon Giovi owes me a pizza. These guys I watched play impromptu a number of times. Just jamming their stuff, and making fun of other songs. Especially Beatles music. A real riot! Love 'em.
Jack smith Agreed. Nothing against The Boss or Bon Jovi, but the Smithereens are always my first Jersey option. And considering my family comes from Passaic (admittedly, I'm a Maryland native), I take that stuff seriously.
saw these guys at the International Ballroom in atlanta. smaller venue. after the show I went up & talked w them. They pulled an album cover off the wall, all signed it & gave it to me. Awesome guys!!
A boss tune !! After all these years it still rocks the house . Small stereo speakers need not apply. In 2021 that's the ticket on how to make great music . Blast from the past , great memories.
Yep - still listening Oct, 2020. I worked as theater tech at Spaulding Auditorium, Dartmouth College in the early 1980s. Smithereens played one night on a bill with Joan Jett, I think. I met Pat Dinizio backstage after their set - told him I really liked their sound and music. His response - "You really liked us?" Never forgot that - yeah, Pat, I really liked the band, the music the sound. Shoulda invited him out for a beer. Sweet man....
These cats came to UMaine in the early 90's and played in "The Pit", Maine's basketball arena. When they soundchecked this tune I could hear it on the front steps of Fogler Library, all the way across The Mall- had to have been 400 yards. Great band from a better, vanished time.
This is one of the greatest rock and roll songs of all time. So happy to see 2+ million views. I was very luck to have a dad who showed me this song because I have never heard it anywhere else other than his house. This kicks ass I rarely feel this good when I hear music these days
Don't know why I remember things like this but, The Smithereens played this song on Saturday Night Live September 1, 1990. Later that evening my wife gave birth to our only daughter. That same daughter is about to have her first child. And yes, I'm still rocking to The Smithereens now as a proud grandfather. Long Live The Smithereens !!!
Patrick Michael DiNizio October 12, 1955 Plainfield, New Jersey, Scotch Plains-Fanwood High School. He was very proud of his Italian heritage.. We miss you Pat D..
I'm still listening to it I'm 56 years old and I'm very into music have been all my life my children are into the same as they were brought up on and their children between them they have 10 and 1 Great Grandaughter Keep Rockin in the USA GOD BLESS AMERICA 🙏💓😘
Yeah, they should have been, I'll agree! I'm a Jersey boy, so of course I'm gonna say that! But seriously, these guys were awesome during my teenage years, no question! :-)
Bob Stamm of High Ridge Missouri wrote this song in 1978. He had it on cassette, I was in A Daytona FL club in 1984& gave it to the drummer who was saying they were working on a band project called The Smithereins.True story. Next year the song is on the radio KSHE 95 STL MO
The thing that always got me about The Smithereens was I use to picture them as reasonable young dudes in their early 20s. (I had only really heard their music) But they were guys in their mid 30s who beat expectations and got popular on the college/alt rock radio at the time. Goes to show your never too old to beat expectations.
I'm with you, dude! I'll be 70 in December this year. Our cover band plays three Smithereens songs, A Girl Like You, Blood and Roses and Behind the Wall of Sleep throughout the Central Florida area!
Cada vez que escucho estas canciones de nuevo, recuerdo que existe la musica de verdad, la hecha con las manos y el corazon. Que no se pierda, sigamos recordandola...
Dear Brothers and Sisters Please Honor Another Fallen musical Hero Gone Way to Soon, By Taking time to >Focus On Pat s Life >His Music, His Love For Family, Friends and Fans. We All Die, But People Like Pat and The Awesome Music that he and The Smithereens Made Help Us All Feel Good till we do. Peace
Being an old fart, I forgot how much I liked a lot of rock from the 90's. Most of my friends were still listening to 60's pop, rock and folk. This song brings back a flood of memories... Listening to it now is like opening an old photo album.
good gravy, man! for some reason I'm in a vortex of old music here and it is OHHHH SOOOO GOOOD to hear this hard driving music! Seems like my friends are STILL PLAYING 60's pop, rock, folk and BLUES OVERKILL. And that stuff is now 50+ years old. ugh
Man, I love this band so much. I had their greatest hits and listened to it constantly on repeat. To me, this group was vastly underrated in a time when there was very overrated music. RIP to Pat.
Quite possibly the best rock band to ever come out of New Jersey! The Smithereens were incredible musicians and songwriters extraordinaire! Go see them on tour (although without the great Pat DiNizio... RIP)!
The best video by one of the best bands to come out of America in the 1980's. Only these guys and Tom Petty and the Heartbreakers in the USA, Dire Straits in England, U2 in Ireland and AC/DC out of Australia kept Rock and Roll alive in this barren era after punk. The Smithereens were always underrated, and Pat's lyrical voice underscored by heavy metal rhythm has never been duplicated.
