One of the things I love about these videos is it starts immediately. There is no long drawn-out introduction there is no explanation of what Mario Brothers 3 is and the long boring history of video games in general but simple content immediately. I love the humbleness and I love the content even more. Keep up the good work I'll watch it all.

Summoning Salt is genuinely one of my favorite channels on RU-vid right now. Not only do I love the vocals, and find the speedrun history fascinating, but I also binge-watched a lot of the channel's content when I was going through a rough patch and it was just very therapeutic during an extremely nerve-racking time in my life, so this channel definitely holds a special place in my sub list. "We're Finally Landing" by HOME is one of the most satisfying songs I've ever heard and its mainly because of this channel. Summoning Salt always uses the song during a climatic moment when a speedrunner has accomplished something truly fantastic. It gives me goosebumps whenever I hear it.

Unfortunately some have taken it pretty hard when the constant of speedrunning occurs: all times can be beaten. Maybe not beaten in the way you'd think, however, maybe it turns out something believed to be impossible is possible.

I never had much interest in speedruns either to be honest, but there are some really amazing ones out there. Most entertaining run/runner I've ever seen is Heyzeusherestoast who does Bloodborne speedruns. Fascinating game to see run (play it first if you're bothered by spoilers), and probably THE most fascinating runner I've ever seen. Another great game to see run is Sonic Adventure 2. There's a great run by Talon floating out there. Some games are clearly superior speed run potential and become infinitely more entertaining than almost every other game.

Time feels so arbitrary in these videos. Like speedrunning is uneffected by the world and the only reason we don't have a fuller story is because we are stuck here in 2018. This story goes on but we can't see it yet. It's a pretty cool aspect of these vids and speedrunning in general.

It’s really funny to me that people wouldn’t like warp whistles. Like, I can understand them saying glitches shouldn’t count because it’s unintended and glitchless is its own category and stuff. But to say that an intentional game mechanic is cheating is super confusing and nonsensical

Wow, that early hammer manipulation makes so much sense! (long post warning) Computers can't actually make random numbers, and instead have what are called "pseudorandom" functions, where if you put in one number, say 1, you get a seemingly random number out, say 13409735291, and if you put in a different number, say, 2, you get a totally unrelated number out, say, 659274403. The number that goes into these pseudorandom functions is called the "seed". The problem is, if you put the same seed in, you will always get the same output. So in our example, if you put 1 in again, you will always get 13409735291 out guaranteed. The way programmers typically get around this is by using the system time as the seed. So if it's November 23rd, 2018, 12:21:56 PM, then the number 11232018122156 would be used as the seed (simplified for illustration). That way, since time doesn't repeat, you would have consistently different seeds guaranteed....the problem is, the NES doesn't have a real time clock! So, they most likely used the number of frames (or maybe CPU clocks) since the start of the game as the seed instead. This largely works just as well. The only small flaw is, with a bit a cleverness and a lot of patience, it's susceptible to exactly what Mitch is doing! I don't know how common this tactic already was in the community, but that's awesome. Hats off to Mitch

While not used in the specific way needed here, a lot of step routes in RPG's are very similar in terms of seed manipulation. Basically it progresses the seed in certain ways when certain actions are done (like soft resting the console can change the seed) because of the way early RPG's worked, usually these seeds only went up to 256 and with a spreedsheet you could figure out what seed you were on before you started a run, manipulate it to be the seed you wanted it to be when you actually did start the run and then use that so you can avoid certain "random" elements from screwing you over (things like random encounters, npcs movements, etc.). It's honestly a really cool way to manipulate rng. As for the time specific one, one of the DS pokemon games does the same thing (I think it is Diamond/Pearl) where if you set the time to exactly the same thing every time before you start, you can make it to where your starter is generated on the same "second" of time every time you go to run the game, and as such get the desired stats. Unfortunately these types of systems are actually pretty good at what they do beyond that initial generation, as if you get off pace by even a second or two it becomes completely "random" to you again

It isn't random in real life either. Science has determined freewill is an illusion. Everything is predestined. Moreover, the past, present, and future all exist at once. The future is already written and it will be whatever you decide to do in the present. After doing some tests and finding having no free will affected people negatively, Scientists agreed to try and keep it a secret, but you can find this information if you do a bit of research. What's even crazier is that they are saying the future can influence the past. In the middle of my truth about god video, I mirrored a 30 minute or so science documentary about the nature of time. I don't remember what it's called but you may run into it searching for time or quantum gravity or simulation theory new evidence. The video is narrated by a blond woman and incorporates several failed attempts at humor.

This is one of my favorites, because there's an entertaining narrative. I like when there's 2 runners who keep competing with each other across the years. You get to know them across the video and feel invested in their success. I hate it when there's iconic runners who basically pioneer a run and all of the tricks, then at the end of the video someone who you don't care about comes like "sup guys lol", takes the record and that's where it stands. It's so anticlimactic and jarring.

You'd be surprised I think a lot of men actually want to be a father. Timing is everything tho and it can scare the living socks off of people. But leaving you alone to handle it all by yourself when it's his kid. That makes me mad. No matter what your dealing with, to leave it all up to the girl is downright sad and I wouldn't be able to live with myself. I don't know the guy but it's perpetuating a bad cycle. I was an only kid and was raised by a single mother. Barely saw him and now I don't plan on seeing him again. But I love my mom very much and recognize how hard it must of been for her. And then when her mother died when I was 14 she was completely alone besides me. You can do this. Hope you have supportive parents cause that'll make a world of difference. Don't forget to take time for yourself from time to time. And know that it is not selfish to do things for yourself. As long you care for and love that kid your doing your job right. Having a lingering interest in speedrunning (since discovering it when I was young around 2010) ,I love this freaking channel. The feeling of discovering new things with the tricks and glitches speedrunners find , and learning about how the game works to understand these glitches, is so interesting to me. Here's an analogy: Let's say you have to make it from point A to point C, as fast as possible, and the rules say that you have to reach point B before point B. That doesn't mean you can't use other tools to help you get to point B and to point C faster, like a bicycle or a car. If you can't put up with this look at glitchless runs.
