"Hotarubi decided to create a run that was so amazing, everyone thought it was fake, AND save the animals just to annoy everyone" that's my kind of trolling right there
Imagine flexing so hard on a community you A) Break their record so hard they can't believe it could possibly be real. B) Do it while wasting time getting a 'different ending.' C) Break it so god dang hard they start doing segmented runs just to prove that they could theoretically beat you. D) Break THAT record because F you. E) Make them essentially start racing for second because you are a god and they are mere mortals. F) Change the scoring system by beating them so hard. G) And then proceed to move on and wreck people in other games. Talk about beaten at your own game. Dear god that is legendary levels of flexing. Aaron would have to flex himself out of the freaking galaxy to match that.
As someone who was part of the community at the time... it was AMAZING. Hotarubi was like a god to us when he dropped that run... it felt like Christmas morning.
It can be argued that Hotarubi is the greatest speedrunner of all-time, not just for Super Metroid but for the wider speedrunning community in general. This guy held records that stood unmatched for years in games from the Mega Man and Mario franchises in addition to his legendary sub-50 minute time in Super Metroid. He was so far ahead of his time, god bless him. Also, you're right, his flex on the Super Metroid speedrunning community was pure gold.
Oh he will. Remember, the title is progression of the world record. He had revisited several that have had significant progress. It's about time. Though I've noticed usually it's discovery of a new glitch or tactic that prompts several people having a back and forth with the record for a bit before it stabilizes, which makes sense. Shaving a little time while impressive, isn't earth shattering progress. But finding a new move that allows others access to the top level, getting others in the competition, now that's progress.
Would love to see him revisit this one. As great as this video is, it's clear that not only has the speed run category advanced since this video, but Salt's also improved his videos.
It's kinda cool, they are competing against each other in the sense that they want to get the WR, but they are working together in the sense that they want to see the game reach its maximum limit. TASers also play a huge role in finding new things, and everyone that are into running one specific game, work together to push the game to its limit. Then it's just up to whoever to nail the record. They are really hype for eachother when records are beaten.
Having been in the Super Metroid community since May of 2011, I can't begin to tell you how satisfying this video was, and I can't thank you enough for doing the research and presenting it all so well. The majority of these runners are people I consider good friends, so it's amazing to see it all put together and for their story and the story of the Super Metroid community to be shared. Thank you, and keep making great videos and providing a positive source of content for the speedrunning community as a whole.
@@Kyle49840 He wasn't; that's not what the term means. When people say "behemothed" they mean the new record came seemingly out of nowhere, as it happened when Behe recorded both his 45:22 and 43:48 without revealing his progress that lead up to these times. But in this case both Zoast and Behemoth returned to grinding the any% in late 2017 on stream and very gradually-a few seconds at a time, no double-digit improvements anymore-brought the time down in a constant back-and-forth. This time none of the progress came out of nowhere: it was all publicly built up, followed, and greatly anticipated.
My rare-to-give sincere feedback: Please continue this series. The effort is noticed and so appreciated. I've always enjoyed speedruns in any capacity, but your way of breaking down the different chronicles of glitches and milestones is a complete treat. Usually this is stuff where we can only know half the story through stumbling upon the different runs. Your thorough coverage off all the specific interesting in-between stuff that would literally be impossible for myself to put aside the energy and time to discover is professional and concise, yet detailed and explained well enough to really the build a great story behind the runs. Thanks for the videos so far... Looking forward to what's to come!
At the time they really couldnt. It took 6 years and the discovery of several new tricks and strategies to beat his run. The run that eventually beat his was nowhere near the same level of execution, it just had improved strats.
Yo, HOTARUBI is back! He is once again running super Metroid. Good times. His channel is called htrb Edit: He renamed it back to Hotarubi. Seems hes getting more serious again. Hes also Posting very active lately!
I LOVE THE HEADPHONE WARNING! Why don't more people do this? I'm fine with that level of noise/distortion, with a heads up about 2.5-4 seconds beforehand. That's a classy move from a classy channel.
We need a Hotarubi special. You can do a series on especially prolific speedrunners who held MANY records such as him, Billy Mitchell and others. A good off-shoot to the sort of stuff you are already producing. Pls Lord.
Billy is obviously a cheat, but he is an undeniably good player. Todd is just mediocre at best. Billy’s problem is he couldn’t settle with being the 3rd or 4th best at any of his games, he had to be #1
What's funny is, "KPDR" is the intended route. At least, it seems like it with the way you get power-ups. It's crazy that it took so long for people to look at doing the bosses out of order, especially since they are using tricks that allow them to skip some power-ups anyway.
I dunno, there are a TON of categories for this game, with Reverse Boss Order being one of the more known (and crazier) ones, so it's really more that people hadn't put enough thought into optimizing every aspect of a full run for speed with virtually every combination of bosses possible. Thought of that way, it's more understandable.
Is not that they didnt think about it, is just that many tricks had to be figured out before the current route became viable. The current Phantoon kill method took a while to be figured out. Without it, going for Phantoon first was a bad idea since the fight would take way too long without a 2 cycle kill method. Also to even consider the current route it was necessary to know all the quick speed boost tricks necessary in lower norfair. Untill behemoth came around and figured out all the necessary details, the route was simply not viable. In short, they did look into it, but there were several technical difficulties to be solved before another route was WR viable.
Well, it makes sense the intended route would be the fastest. The order you get the upgrades hugely impact how fast you can get through an area. Consider this: It took years of research and experimentation with different routes to find a viable one, and even then, it only saved a MAXIMUM of around 100 seconds. I think that’s more surprising than anything.
@@AwesomeHairo The main thing is it would ruin all the times currently on the leaderboard, it would completely invalidate the english category since japanese would be like 15 minutes shorter, and in general, it would be a big change for where the community is at. Not to mention the fact that half the real time is cutscenes.
@@jijonbreaker There is also not much reason to switch to real time. In SM, the choice of timing has a major effect on the route used, but in Fusion, you have to take practically the same route no matter what. So while in SM, it is totally reasonable for one person to have a much faster in-game time but much slower real time, in Fusion, that's not really a thing.
Would be huge to do an updated version of this, would love to see the current day Summoning Salt WR Progression story telling magic applied to the current day Oats n Goats Super Metroid magic.
It's great to see how much Summoning Salt has improved over the years. Super Metroid is one of my favorite games and I would love to see a remake/follow-up to this video, because a game such as this deserves the insane production value of modern Summoning Salt
JihadNinja yea man, I just commented on how needless to say creative but how his formula works and will continue to work without ever becoming stagnate.
Not without somehow incorporating a lot of TAS strats. I still think 40:2X will happen some day, but it's gonna take amazing RNG. Oats barely made any major mistakes (only two that I noticed, both in the last 20 seconds, and he maybe lost one second to both of them put together) and almost all of his time losses were due to bad drops and other RNG (fast-fast Phantoon would have been nice).
I was wondering where it was at today. I know at least 1 new strat was made where u moonwalk or something off platforms cause it makes u fall faster I think? I read about it awhile ago can't remember.
What a gold mine concept you got yourself involved with. These are always such a treat to watch. Please keep them up man. And we appreciate the work as usual!
The record changed hands several times, but then something nobody could predict happened: Out of nowhere, a new challenger emerged, securing the record. Then the record changed hands several times, but then something nobody could predict happened: Out of nowhere, a new challenger emerged, securing the record. Then the record changed hands several ti- I feel like there's only ever one twist when it comes to emerging records.
It's worth mentioning that the KPDR boss order used by Smokey and other runners of the time is the same boss order that the game designers intended most players to use. Although Smokey skipped many parts of the intended route ("sequence-breaking") like the miniboss Crocomire, required to get the Grapple Beam, he did not change the boss order because at the time, this was still the fastest route known within the capabilities of the runners. The sequence breaks Smokey used were still very significant though. For instance, the Grapple Beam allows for a relatively quick kill on Draygon, which becomes a difficult fight without it. There are some inaccurate claims in the video. For example, Smokey fought Mother Brain with 5 energy tanks, so none of her attacks could kill him in one hit. Today, top runners fight her with just 3 tanks, the minimum possible, so if they get hit by a single red beam ("ketchup"), they will not have enough energy remaining to survive her "rainbow beam," which is unavoidable. Probably the biggest omission though was Twocat. While Zoast and oatsngoats were grinding the 41, there was fierce competition at the same time from Twocat and Kottpower. It was a four-way race for quite a while before Zoasty and oats really started to pull ahead. Behemoth started to catch up too. The way you describe it makes it sound like oats and zoast were the only two in the running, which is just not the case. And it's still not the case today. Behemoth could easily show up and behemoth oats any day now. And indeed, all of these runners mentioned (along with a few others) have world records in at least one category.
i came to see if my fellow salt x super metroid heads would be here sounding the horn. i am not disappointed. the story of this record from 6 years ago to today is very interesting and im not sure i even know all of the details. i only really know of oat's most recent superhuman grind to reclaim the top spot. i would lose my mind if this game/cat got the modern salt treatment and i know im not the only one. fingers are crossed for a new sm any% video.
Behemoth and Zoast's achievements over the last several years were spectacular, and now ShinyZeni has become a top tier player doing a lot. I'd like an update to this video but a complete history of 100% would be sick too. Either are long overdue
2021 update summoning salt? The WR categories have really narrowed down. And we have some SICK low% runs, impossible hack WRs. Absolutely worthy of your commentary.
Looking at the LB now, zoast is back in first, nearly all of the top 20 scores in any% were submitted 1-5 years ago. The most recent scores were submitted 1 week, 3 months, and 4 months ago, at #10, #16, and #13, respectively, with #20 being 42:57, an already extremely difficult time to get. It's one thing for the top 5 to stagnate, but for the top 20 to stagnate and given the barrier to entry even in the top 20 means any% is dead until someone strikes gold again. The scores on the 100% cat are all much more recent.
@@faaltoh I have to nitpick your wording. When you say something "aged like milk", you are implying that it is wrong or made a bad prediction. I said "any% is dead _until someone strikes gold again"._ According to you, Zoast got a PB in October and any% has since revived. This does not contradict what I said.
Us: time for you to update your video on Super Metroid and give it that 1+ hour treatment, so much has happened since this one dropped SS: here have another Mario Kart WR progression video 🤗🥰
shoutouts to me in the chat at 18:04 !!! (Swaaz) best game ever made !!! garrison got me into speedrunning long live the king that in my opinion made the game more popular into what it is now today considered "mainstream" zoast and behemoth are living legends, ive even skipped meals just to sub to zoast during hard times just for the sheer amount of live entertainment he has given us all oh and cant forget the god of ceres oatsngoats (who has turned PC lately which was unfortunate but he is still awesome) im soo passionate about this that i cant stop without mentioning kott aswell... this comment has turned into a mess now
All of Zoast's and Behemoth's achievements, first sub-27 igt, then Oats new WR, ShinyZeni is doing amazing things... we need an updated history AND a history of 100%.
It’s absolutely insane how far the record has moved since Hotarubi’s seemingly unbeatable time. His once unfathomable pace now ranks 153 officially. Hell, even oatsandgoats has been bumped out of the top 5 since this was posted.
I think since oats smashed the wr again, can you do an update on this masterpiece game. Also, can you bring back the old intro music. It's so memorable and gives such a suited feeling. mate, love your work. One of my favourite channels. Cheers
Amazing that this has since been brought down by 1:10 to 40:46 as of last week. 40:2X is probably possible with current routing, assuming perfect execution and favorable RNG.
Oats was 1st place with this video.... he was surpassed so many times but currently he's soooo close to reclaiming this title, just 5 seconds off Wish him luck...def my favorite speedrun strimmer with how he constantly mocks people that post in his chat (tbf, most of the chat posters deserve it, like why!!??) Just watch highlights on YT due to job obligations but he's so great, definitely the "GOAT" of SM speedrunning.....get it????
im so glad to finally understand the origin of the "save the animals" meme, as well as the term behemoth'd. i saw both quite often under various speedrun videos but never looked up what it means. glad i stumbled over it on your amazing series. thanks!
I beat it for my first time last night too. It’s incredible how well it holds up to modern games. If it were released on steam today it would be almost indistinguishable from an indie game. It surpasses them in other ways like art and tone. And I can’t say that about any other game on the snes.
@@mailsonsilvadesena5977 I just beat it yesterday and it took me 13 hours in game time lol. I did spend a majority of that time looking for missiles though. No guide until the very end because I was missing three. Couldn’t figure out where that last one was even with a guide.
@@leaffinite2001 100% is based on the item collection percentage displayed after the game's credits. It's all about collecting items, you don't even have to kill all of the bosses. There is a category called "True 100%" which does require saving the animals, but nobody runs it due to the sheer number of things you need to do in the run.
You can really feel his pain when he accidentally kneels instead of dropping down into her ship! Great video, I love that you capture those critical moments that lead to a new world record, and their efforts to make new strategies. The music choices are on point too. Great work!
All of these WR Progressions have been really well done. Subbing for more. Wouldnt mind seeing some other big title games like Zelda LttP or OoT. castlevania 4 had some fun wr swapping in 2015 and recent strats that have come out to push the record further down.
I would love to see and update on this one day and of course a 100% WR progression and thanks for mentioning me in the video with the routing for the current Any% Route!!! I will say it was mostly Smokey, Reeve and Behemoth. I pretty much just said that going Phantoon First would be the only definite time save for RTA and they took it from there. I appreciate the credit none the less though, Thank You!!!
