Ken Anthony - not exactly true, Ken...(not completely false either...’one claw only’ is still a good guideline). Facts: The 1978 Davis study T-522 from the South Florida Research Center was the foundation for much of what we know about stone crabs. It was updated in 1986, and has been a key reference document for the FWC for rules and management. They determined that when both claws were taken, the mortality rate was 47% vs 28% for single claw removal. The biggest killer was improper removal of a claw. They CAN still feed themselves, but they go from predator to scavenger. Defense is only a concern in areas with high concentrations of crabs (breeding battles)...otherwise, the octopus is the number one predator (besides us) and claws mean nothing to them. There is research that supports taking BOTH claws in certain circumstances. Older (large) females tend to be better breeders when both claws are removed (properly). Probably because they can’t fight off males. So yeah, you’re helping them get gang-banged by taking both claws. The scavenger diet is also better for breeding. But again, if you can’t remove them right and not damage the diaphragms then don’t take both. I caught a massive female while freediving off the Breakers Resort in Palm Beach. Her claws were bigger than my hands. I removed both (carefully), put her back in her hiding spot, and sliced up a mangrove snapper for her to eat. Over the next 2 years I found her in different places, and got to watch the claws grow back as she molted each fall. She had a huge egg sac the last time I saw her, just off Mar-a-Lago on the PEP reef in 35’ of water. She had a very distinct shell deformity so I knew it was her. Her claws would have been legal on the next molt, but I never saw her again.

i find this a little bit disturbing. feels like animal cruelty breaking of the claws of crabs with the thinking like "its ok they can grew a new one" i mean just because they can what gives u the right to break the one they have? My 3 year old have her milk teeths still in and she will get her permanents later it dosnt make it ok for me to hit her teeths out saying its ok ull get new ones.

I grew up in Florida...part of my family were Commercial fisherman. There was one man that worked for my Grandfather and he would give me a milk crate of claws on the weekends, when he needed help fishing his traps. Lets just say, i was Well fed = )
PSA the second you separate the crab from the claw, the claw is dead meat. Unless you can see home from your crab traps you should have ice on board to protect the flavor of the claws and to protect yourself from the bad that spoiled claws can get. Great video. Peace

that break on the big crab don't look clean at all, a clean break is essential for survival rate. plus breaking 2 claws significantly decrease their survival as well. R.I.P big crab.
Her fitness is inspiring, yet, for me---I know, I know--the dental floss backed bikini is truly too much for me. Not sexy, more crude to me anyway. But, of course we know she looks great, speaks well, wish them well with these videos. I hope they include a section that covers what you do, after being in the direct a sun awhile--the type of sun blocking stuff you put on, to protect the skin--yes, I also know, this is not a public service video, but it is an outdoor video, and I've seen a few where the babe does both, starts with the bikini and ends up with the long sleeve pullover for that sun protection.
