My best crate digging adventure was at a semi-private record fair in a private house in Foxton near Cambridge. I was at right angles to my mate as we were both eyes-down and flicking through a load of 45’s and teasing each other about the up-coming trip to Utrecht in a few months time. I paid no attention to the guy that slipped into the space between us and we carried on our banter , suddenly a voice I recognised interjected into our private but public conversation , it was none other than John Peel himself. Both my mate and myself made quick , fleeting eye contact as we both silently acknowledged his presence between us both , but carried on flicking and welcomed his occasional quips into our conversation. After about 10 more minutes my mate asked if I fancied a break and to go and grab a coffee at which point John kinda invited himself to join us with a “that’s sounds like a good idea” and so the three of us sat down for the next 40 minutes or so over tea and coffee. What was so nice about it was that because of where we was there was an immediate topic of conversation to chat about as we all passed back and forth our respective purchases as you do when you sit down at a record fair , commenting on everybody’s else’s pick-ups of the day so far. His small pile consisted entirely of 78 rpm’s for his own collection , I can remember also talking to him about his own dabblings in running his own record label “Dandelion Records”. I remember passing comment of being surprised to see him buying records after all the freebies he must get given every single day of the year . I also passed comment on what his wife thought of his huge collection and jokingly asked what she would do with them when he shuffled off this mortal coil , “she hasn’t got a clue about records” was his general reply. Unbeknown to me at the time that line of jokey questioning was to stick in my mind and ring a big bell in my head when only about 6 to 8 weeks later the news came through that the great man had died in Peru on holiday. What a magic 40 minutes of memories for me.

Fantastic story, David - thanks for sharing it. Working in record shops in Cambridge in the 1980's, I was fortunate enough to bump into the great man a couple of times myself. I'm glad his collection in being preserved and looked after.

Parlogram Auctions ... Did you work at Andy’s Records In Burleigh street (?) , I lived in the St. Ives area about 12 miles away. I had a second hand record shop in st.ives for about 6-8 years , had some great things pass through my hands and lots of things I wish I had kept now , but needs must and bills needed paying at the time. I was lucky enough to discover eBay when it was only 2 years old , old enough for there to be a decent audience , but not old enough that everybody was aware of it , for a golden few years even bog-standard , so-so condition , stuff was selling for a fortune to an overseas audience that was hankering after British issues ...those were the days!

@@davidheafield1436 I discovered Andy’s oldies shop (‘The Beat Goes On’) in Regent St., Cambridge in 1980. That basement was a wonderful Aladdin’s cave which was never the same after it moved to the Grafton Centre. I didn’t work there but at both branches of 'Our Price’ in Cambridge ’85-‘88. I remember your shop in St. Ives and even sold a few things to you in the late ’90’s. The early days on Ebay were indeed golden, but unfortunately time moves on. Hope you’re well and still collecting/dealing. Andrew.

Parlogram Auctions ...... you know what , I’ve enjoyed watching a lot of your videos , you’ve got a calm , concise and sanguine quality to your voice overs but it was only on this Utrecht series that I saw your face and (honestly) I thought your face was familiar to me ! My shop was “Nemesis Records”. When I look back now I realise I was about a decade too early in opening my shop , it had been a lifelong dream of having a second-hand record shop but at the time of opening it collecting vinyl was still deep in the doldrums with the “revival” still many years away yet.....just us passioned few keep the torch alight. I fell into the (necessary) trap of putting all the good stuff straight onto eBay to the detriment of the shop stock , I knew even then it was folly but I needed sales to pay the rent on the shop...Hobsons choice! In the end I shut up shop and sold from my house without all the expense of rent and rates , but then I missed having collections being bought in to me. I’ve still got my own collection , I always did have the worse stocked Beatles section as all the good stuff came home with me ! Long before I had a shop I put out some adverts in the post office windows looking for “Beatles memorabilia” and one day I got a phone call about a “Beatles Demo” , it turned out to be a Dick James acetate of “Can’t buy me love / you can’t do that” ....there’s a little bit of extra erroneous engineer talk on the start of “You can’t do that” which was a nice bonus , still got it as well as some other Solo Beatles acetates bought from eBay when it was still in its infant years It’s a small world Andrew !

@@davidheafield1436 Small word, indeed. I nearly set up my own shop in '95 but took another path. That CBML acetate sounds like a great piece. Beatles acetates are always in demand and are increasing in value. Thanks for watching my other videos, I plan to expand the content in 2020. We could even do a piece on your story and collection !

@@Parlogram its because you are obsessed with facts about the record industry of that era vs. your opinion of how it was presented in the present context. I'm surprised the French beatle museum dude didn't have any Beatle instruments like Hofner Bass or Epiphone Casino guitar???

I just can’t imagine how expensive the shopping at this fair might be! But it was expensive because they were in mint condition and original, right?
