Due to the short length of the music, a lot of footage i would have liked to include could not be added to this video. This is the best i could do with the length of the accompanying music. Hope you like it!

There was 8 planned to be built however only 6 were only made.These soviet designed and built submarines had a displacement of 48,000 tons and 564 ft long with 2 nuclear reactors giving it 100,000 horsepower. It had 20 missile silos with each missile carrying 10 independently targeted warheads with each warhead carrying a explosive power of 100 kilotons 6 times more powerful than the bomb dropped on hiroshima. They were designed with ww3 on the cards and to destroy the entire continental usa. Truly fearsome vessels!

Almost got broadsided by one of these, in international waters of cours. They were below the thermal layer we were above it. As they rose through it and our sonar detected them it was too late to do anything but pray and be really quiet. They missed us by about 40 feet. A day I will never forget.

I was on the design team for the "Trident" (later designated Ohio Class). We did what was, at the time, some pretty advanced concepts for maintainability, including capabilities for rapid swap out of large machinery. The crews are amazing. You can go onboard an Ohio class boat today and it looks as clean, spotless, and functional as the day we delivered it to the Navy.

@user-sh5wq5jf5l
@user-sh5wq5jf5l 10 лет назад

+Adecodoo The purpose of this thing has never been to fire anything at anyone, neither US or (former) Soviet never, ever WANTED a nuclear war ("mutually assured destruction" is a BAD thing). The purpose is similar to that of Putin sitting bare chested on a horse; to make Russians feel like they're the alpha males of the planet and to scare Americans. Needless to say, only this submarine actually managed to scare anyone, Putin on a horse just makes everyone in the world (not Russian) laugh their ass off.
@Car_Mo
@Car_Mo 8 лет назад
Well, my comment wasn't really a reply to you. I just wanted an excuse to mock the Russian alpha male behavior in general and Putin in particular. From a bystanders view point, Putins behavior has "cave man" written all over it and russians are not only blind to it, they seem to love it ... well, there i go again.

Size DO matter. They try to make them as small as possible with as much firepower as possible to avoid being detected. So with that in mind, the russians failed. These subs are easily detected as they are to big. That means larger areas to detect and larger and more noisy machines. These subs are really not much o brag about with that considered.

At 2.52 times the largest US boats Ohio class. Displacement underwater: Typhoon (RU): 48 000 tonnes; Ohio (USA) 18 750 tonnes. We have developed it as a doomsday weapon. This submarine was to destroy the United States in the case of pre-emptive strike on Russia. The construction is designed so that the crew could survive a nuclear apocalypse. No wonder that Americans are very afraid of the submarine. There have been created 6 pieces. But after the defeat in the Cold War America destroyed three of them right on the docks, reviewing them on metal. It is a time of betrayal. When the government sold all over the country and its people. Watch without tears was impossible ... But the remaining three submarines still in service. And they are very angry at the Americans for their brothers ... And besides, the cold war began again, and these monsters have taken their rightful place in the ranks.
@greyfox79007

Not really it was designed to break ice and launch missiles hence the size and reinforced tower. It did it's job well might I add. No other class of SSBN can operate under the northern or southern ice packs without risks. The job of a SSBN is to hide some where in the world and await order t launch having more place to hide and launch is a good thing.

@whatdidyousay1455 9 лет назад
Дмитрий Реалист The Americans didn't destroy the Typhoon class submarines after Cold War ended. Typhoon class submarines are insanely expensive (duh) and Russia was in deep financial crisis during the 90's.. They couldn't modernize their fleet nor pay any salary to the sailors, or even repair/modernize their subs. U.S and other Western nations took the cost to dismantle those subs, without U.S and West E backing, those gigantic subs would still be out there, rusting and eventually leaking dangerous radiation.. It was the Russian government who agreed. Also, Typhoon Class submarine have played out their role. There are Submarines which have exactly the same capability as the Typhoon yet they are smaller and cheaper... Nevertheless, magnificent machines! How many were built? I think 6. 6 Submarines of this class, WOOW that's EXPENSIVE! and to MAINTAIN them? Holy fuck. Not to mention modernize them. Friggin' unbelievable expensive.

The fatal flaw is that East nuke subs or West nuke subs level of efficiency does not matter - as one is half that of Ohio class means it's able to destroy the planet 88 times vs Ohio's 161 times (capice? NO one wins - if rus and u.s. subs go at it against each other there's not enough planet to 'have a fight, a contest' - not enough planet, kids.

Its so funny that americans and russians are arguing about the best sub. In the meantime, no american can admit that one Swedish sub took out your Ohio sub, and Ronald Reagan without being spotted. Sweden has the most leathal subs for now. And we are developing even more advanced ones as we speak. Russian subs are way coller then american subs, by the way.

the ohio class, what a beautiful american submarine. Im american but this submarine, the typhoon is the best in design. Its just so different. By the way there are no longer typhoons, they are taking them apart, so ohio class wont have to sink anything.

they still have them just like we stockpile everything. Irregardless, Ohio class sub is the most dangerous weapon in the world.

I'm not too sure the typhoon class can be said to be a 'better' design. I think they did use titanium for the hull, and even implemented a liquid bismuth reactor rather then a high pressure water cooled reactor. But both of these had practical flaws. Like welding titanium is difficult and it cracks more easily under high pressure, and the bismuth reactor was subject to overheating and malfunctioning

The United States and Russian subs are completely stealth while the British subs can be detected as soon as they leave port. I think theirs is at the Vangaurd Class.

Open Beta I know that for a fact because the vanguard class sub is outdated compared to the US and Russian subs. The Brits haven't updated their subs in quite a while because they updated their carriers to the Queen Elizabeth class and their type 45 destroyers. How ever the the Vanguard class was serviced in 1993 so I don't know why the brits didn't make it stealth. The typhoon class AKA Akula was serviced in 1981 and the Ohio class in 1981 but they both have stealth capabilities.

You are right. According to Wikipedia, BrahMos is about Mach 2-3. Air-launch and sub-launch are still under development.

It does not matter how impressive the Rooskie subs are. U.S. has multiple capabilities to "see" them anywhere at any depth at any time. They can't hide. They are obsolete.

ah yes thanks for clearing that up, but still this program was made decades after both submarines went into service and they should know by now. In the programs defense though right at the very end i think it mentions that it is the biggest in the west or something

Two similar vessels with two different taskings. The Ohio is a moving missile platform, intended to be hidden by movement and depth. The Typhoon is essentially a mobile missile base, intended to go out, hide under the Arctic ice pack and only surface to launch its missiles. Movement and evasion are secondary to simply being quiet and staying still under a layer of sea ice. Two different Taskings for one purpose: Hide and launch if needed.
