I live in West Virginia in the US and we have a Hara Krishna temple called the palace of gold. They have a colors festival every year that looks a whole lot like this! That temple is my favorite place here and this whole place is almost heaven...the temple here IS heaven. (Well it is now, the history isnt always pretty but those people are no longer there. Its beautiful and peaceful now.)

Only 1% foreigners are viewer of this video 99% are Indian. .

I'm an indian, but still you reminded me how beautiful my county is...🙂

3:19 The man is right. It's "Subh Holi". Everybody is saying "Happy Holi" nowadays, all becoming English... Thanks for the beautiful video! Reminds me of when I was there. It's too bad it has become a festival for men and ladies can't enjoy it in the way it was intended. It has become too aggressive and the men don't respect the ladies at all, touching them, (sexually) harassing them, etc. It was never intended in this way. It is actually a very beautiful festival, one of my most ones actually, of festive ones, besides the spiritual ones. This is a festival where everybody should become one big family. And it is done literally. After all the colours you can't recognize anyone, sometimes not even gender :P Caste, creed, religion, gender, etc. everything vanishes. I hope the festival can come back to this and that we can also live like this for the rest of the year. Edit: I see the post got some likes and reactions, so an edit is maybe due about the paragraph above: This is certainly not the case everywhere. There are many places where women can play without any problem at all. Luckily :) I was more referring to the places like the ones in the video. Usually big cities in certain states. Thanks again! Ermm NO! The slapping is NOT part of the "tradition", its just boys(can't be described as men)with way too much hormones, who thinks they are at a fraternity and/or at a rave party! Holi is a festival in Mauritius too, its joyful and pleasant with no shoving, pushing or slapping! Try not to confuse individual idiocy with religion, culture or tradition.

I played Holi this year in Udaipur which I would recommend to anyone! Still crazy but a little less than this. It’s good in the morning but by early afternoon people are getting too drunk and rough and handsy (if you are a woman). Just some advice for those wishing to visit this wonderful country and festival.

The Legend of Holika and Prahlad The Legend There was once a demon king by the name of Hiranyakashyap who won over the kingdom of earth. He was so egoistic that he commanded everybody in his kingdom to worship only him. But to his great disappointment, his son, Prahlad became an ardent devotee of Lord Naarayana and refused to worship his father. Hiranyakashyap tried several ways to kill his son Prahlad but Lord Vishnu saved him every time. Finally, he asked his sister, Holika to enter a blazing fire with Prahlad in her lap. For, Hiranyakashyap knew that Holika had a boon, whereby, she could enter the fire unscathed. Treacherously, Holika coaxed young Prahlad to sit in her lap and she herself took her seat in a blazing fire. The legend has it that Holika had to pay the price of her sinister desire by her life. Holika was not aware that the boon worked only when she entered the fire alone. Prahlad, who kept chanting the name of Lord Naarayana all this while, came out unharmed, as the lord blessed him for his extreme devotion. Thus, Holi derives its name from Holika. And, is celebrated as a festival of victory of good over evil. Holi is also celebrated as the triumph of a devotee. As the legend depicts that anybody, howsoever strong, cannot harm a true devotee. And, those who dare torture a true devotee of god shall be reduced to ashes. Celebration of the Legend Even today, people enact the scene of 'Holika's burning to ashes' every year to mark the victory of good over evil. In several states of India, specially in the north, effigies of Holika are burnt in the huge bonfires that are lit. There is even a practice of hurling cow dungs into the fire and shouting obscenities at it as if at Holika. Then everywhere one hears shouts of 'Holi-hai! Holi-hai!'. The tradition of burning 'Holika' is religiously followed in Gujarat and Orissa also. Here, people render their gratitude to Agni, the god of fire by offering gram and stalks from the harvest with all humility. Further, on the last day of Holi, people take a little fire from the bonfire to their homes. It is believed that by following this custom their homes will be rendered pure and their bodies will be free from disease. At several places there is also a tradition of cleaning homes, removing all dirty articles from around the house and burning them. Disease-breeding bacteria are thereby destroyed and the sanitary condition of the locality is improved.
