World's Easiest HEATER CORE Change *FREE Volvo XC90*

My free 2004 Volvo XC90 has a few issues, mostly from being full of water and freezing. The freeze ended up breaking most of the cooling system, now we have to repair everything that broke. I'm going to rebuild the entire cooling system but we're starting with the heater core since there was water on the carpet in the cabin when I tested the system. The heater core itself is a fun simple install, and the heater core pipes... well that's a different story.

I have a 78 3/4 ton Dodge van in the backyard and the whole heater core is in a box against the passenger side of the firewall. It appears you just pull the hoses, unscrew the lid, and lift the core straight up out of the box. The guy I bought it from had it since 79 and mentioned it was the easiest one he'd ever done and he replaced it at least once till I bought it dirt cheap and drove it home. Every once and a while we get lucky and they accidentally design and build something that is super easy to deal with.

I've hgad a couple of Volvos. Factory spares are always quality products and not hugely expensive. Especially compared to my BMWs and the Jag. And their build quality and sensible engineering means it is consistent and simple to get the right tool for the job. My 850 had the same setup. The pipes seemed to be easier to take out than yours appeared.

I concur with Sebastian about the sunroof drain lines. That is a much more likely source of water in the interior of these cars. I picked up an 04 XC 90 in similar condition - it was a swamp inside. Taking the dash out is not that big of a deal. There are many many steps, but no one step is particularly complicated (I started with a very limited skill set when I started working on this car). I went to the effort of removing the dash that so that I could replace the HVAC fan and resistor and redo the seal between the inlet air plenum and the firewall - another potential source of leaks. It I were to do it all again I think that I could get the dash out in about six hours and back in about the same amount of time.

Good to see you back on the XC90. That must be one of the easiest heater core jobs to do. The thermostat isn't as easy. The power steering pump, alternator, Aircon compressor and the bracket had to be moved out of the way before I could get to the bottom screw but this was with the diesel engine. I'm looking forward to the next XC90 video. I've got quite a bit of XC90 content on my channel.

Volvo has surprised the hell out of me. I drive a Subaru outback, but my wife is on her third Volvo, the two she traded in were great running cars. For daily driving Toyota, and Subaru which is actually partly manufactured by Toyota, make some of the best cars in the world. Volvo does not get the credit it deserves however, and I don't think it ever will, because of their all electric fleet plans. I am sure they will do it right, but lets be honest, working on one of those is going to be a pain in my ass.

@@generationscomputersystems not only is it the same company, but they've since instituted a lifetime warranty on everything they sell. Literally. Even wear parts like brake pads. Wear 'em out, buy another set, and send back the old ones for a full refund. Net cost of replacement = $0 (minus shipping of course, but that'll still be the cheapest brake job ever). Same goes for fluids. Free oil changes? Yep! Free filters? Yep! Wiper blades? Check! (except for things that can't be put back into their original container, like aerosols, or car-care products that are consumed as a function of their use, like waxes, etc). There's really not many exceptions. But let's say you're doing a Haldex fluid and filter change... that qualifies! If you own a euro vehicle, you'd be absolutely stupid not to take advantage of their warranty to bring the cost of maintenance down to nearly nothing (and the fact that they only sell quality stuff, not off-brand crap like a lot of other places (cough, 1AAuto, ahem!)

Maybe do a video about Impact Guns? As a home tinkerer I’m unsure about what I should start out with 1/2” or 3/8”. Is a 1/4 actually helpful? What brand cordless is the best bang for the buck? What uncommon sockets are super helpful? You already have all the toys, maybe help the fans figure out how to best spend their tool money?
@admiralrustyshackleford119
@admiralrustyshackleford119 2 года назад
Can't go wrong with Milwaukee. DeWalt and Makita make good stuff too. They're all fairly close price wise and power wise. Anymore it's less about the actual brand of the tool, and more about battery loyalty... The batteries for everything are so freaking pricey, so most people buy their first tool kit from whatever particular brand and then stick with that brand for their future purchases since they can now just buy the bare tools without battery and charger and save a fair bit. Whatever brand you pick it's definitely a "buy once cry once" type deal, as in just bite the bullet and buy a "good" one up front instead of buying 2 or 3 cheap ones and spending more in the long run. A "stubby" 3/8 or 1/2 inch from any of the major brands would be a good place to start. I have a Milwaukee M12 stubby 3/8, literally the same thing JR is using in this video. Using a small 2.0ah flush fit battery it gets into pretty much everywhere, I've had standard size 1/4 inch impact drivers in the past that were literally twice the size of it and they made probably 1/10 the power. I use this tool literally 75% of the time. If overall compactness isn't a concern for the current job then I can use larger 4.0ah and 6.0ah batteries on it for more kick. A good second impact to get would be a 3/8 or 1/2 inch "mid torque" from any of the major brands. They're larger then the stubbies but they pack quite a bit more punch. Good for blasting through crusty suspension hardware or stubborn lug nuts. I have a 3/8 Milwaukee M18 mid torque that I reach for if my stubby isn't up to the task. If you encounter anything that the mid torque can't handle then it's time for a 1/2 inch "high torque". A Milwaukee 2767 is my weapon of choice. Usually just having it sitting there in plain sight is enough to make most fasteners behave for either of my 3/8s impacts. If the high torque won't break it loose then it just breaks it off... If you happen to have a Home Depot store near you it's actually a good time to pick up and impact or 2 or 3. They're running extended Black Friday sales on most stuff all ready. Got some really good deals on Milwaukee and DeWalt stuff. Sockets uncommon or not just depends on what you're working on. I just use my regular chrome 3/8s and 1/4 inch sockets on my smaller impacts, they don't make enough grunt to send a regular socket scattering in a million pieces across the garage so I never bothered investing in impact sockets for 3/8s or smaller. I do have a full set of 1/2 inch SAE and metric sockets in shallow and deep well for the big impact. A set of axle nut sockets is good to have in 1/2 inch as well. Ive never spent the big bucks on impact sockets myself, whatever is on the shelve at Harbor Freight has always gotten the job done for me as far as sockets go.

My old Saab 900 had an easy heater core to replace. I guess Swedes don't put up with 12 hrs heater jobs in the middle of winter!

My 72 240 required me to rip out the dash to replace the fan on the heater. 9 hour job.

RHD volvo xc90 is full dash out or chop open and plastic weld back up the heater box job to change heater core. Only LHD is easy swap.

Chanelle locks bro, one line at a time. Those clips would probably be a little easier.. Did you try to remove the other line from under the hood or just from in the car?

Damn, why don't all manufacturers make their heater cores so accessible? My 1999 Mustang GT Heater core required taking off the Left front wheel and wheel arch, removing the front seats, the entire dash, the A pillar panels, the steering wheel assembly, and I only had 1 screw left. (unfortunately it was ground screw so I had to do it all over again to fix that).

I changed 2 heater cores in the 70s and 80s- never again. I wished I was 4 feet tall with hands the size of a 5 year old, while laying on the floor to work behind the glove box.

Cause they are butt hurt about people fixing cars and keeping them on the road instead of treating them like disposable items and buying a new one every time something happens. That is why they make things as difficult and expensive as possible
