Three valves as normal. Fourth valve could go to a kazoo and fifth valve to a screamer to get at least an octave higher than the best trumpet player. The sixth valve could be used for blowing up balloons to keep the kids entertained making balloon animals.

Sixth valve should be like the 8vb pedal on a bass trombone, turning it into a (possibly microtonal) bass trumpet!
@manracmolactrac
@manracmolactrac 7 лет назад
4th valve drops it a 4th for low range/alternate fingers. 5th valve drops it a semitone so you can play as if you have an A trumpet, and 6th valve drops a quarter tone for microtonal music.

Put a squeaker in the valve slide to make it seem like you're playing really high
@ElectroA76
@ElectroA76 7 лет назад
I think the sixth valve could lower it a half step from Bb to A. It would make a lot of keys easier to play. Keys like concert B, for example, could be played with concert C fingerings.
@Wouter10123
@Wouter10123 7 лет назад
I second this. I have a Bb/A horn, and that a side makes certain keys/parts so much easier to play. I'd love to have an A trumpet in Tchaikovsky 5 (A trumpet parts), that's a nightmare to transpose on sight on a Bb trumpet. Same with Dvorak 9, which has an E trumpet part.

Bb/A trumpets were common in the US until about the 1930s. By then, players were more professional and were expected to be able to play in any key. It does, however, create intonation problems.

i like your first plan. its the most logical. and my idea is the 6th valve lowers it a perfect octave. and by the way it sounds really good!!! i couldnt tell the difference in tone between this and a bach or yamaha
@fmonky
@fmonky 7 лет назад
Most of the difference is noticeable if you are playing it and because this is just a digital recording most of the true tone is lost and if your headphones aren't amazing then the quality of he sound is even lower and any trumpet sounds the same. Also being able to hear the difference between a bad trumpet and a well made trumpet comes with experience (and I guess you are pretty young lol which is why it's perfectly ok that you think that this thing sounds as good as a "Yamaha" or "Bach" I'm not going to lecture you about how it's not just a Yamaha there are many models of Yamaha made for both students and professionals as well as with Bach trumpets but I think it would help you if you researched a bit about trumpet brands and what models are produced by Bach and Yamaha so you know the difference between student and professional horns as well as learning the ability to name specific models of trumpets when referring to a professional level instrument such as a Bach Stradivarius (the older ones are better than the newer ones btw) and Yamaha Xeno stuff. And if you are curious or want to learn more about brass instrument brands Hornucopia.com might be interesting to you) a long reply and I've spent too much time writing but I was where you are at one point, you'll understand what I'm saying now in a few years much better and you'll probably even think that this is what you would have said to yourself if you had the ability to reply to your younger self. And one more tip before I go, if you do get really into this stuff, at school in band class try not to show off or impress the other band kids with your knowledge about instruments because most likely you will think you know more than you actually do and what you say isn't actually true. I use to do it a lot because I thought that everyone needed to know how smart I was because they didn't think I was smart and it was pretty embarrassing, but it's hard to avoid and if I were you I wouldn't worry about it too much. Just remember why you are in band, it shouldn't be to impress other people, it should be to have fun and you can impress people but make sure you don't make impressing people your only reason to do band. If you read all of this congratulations because it was a long comment lol but I hope this helps you and lets you look forward a little bit into the future (which comes fast so enjoy whatever grade you're in while you can)
@andrewweirny

Make it so that if you have valves 1 and 3 pressed, 4-6 act like 1-3 on an F instrument, effectively making a Double Trumpet. "Ftrumpet" rolls off the tongue. Horn players are can readily play it because 4-6 are played with the left hand.

@mal2ksc

I agree this is a cool idea, but I think Trent is set on having one of them be a quarter tone valve. You could still do quarter-tones using the 5th valve, but you'd have to compensate for the semitone part -- meaning you have to think of it as a 1.5 semitone valve rather than a 0.5 semitone valve. You can still get to the same destination, it just makes more of a mental detour. Personally I think this might be a worthwhile tradeoff, but it really depends how much super-chromatic playing you do, as consecutive notes will not "feel" consecutive under the fingers anymore. Personally I think the coolest thing would be to take the slide off a "soprano trombone", and just one valve off the spare cluster to make a four-valve Firebird, complete with a 6-position slide (something the Firebird lacks, it has just 4 positions). This would provide chromatic range all the way down to the pedal tones of the instrument, which in turn may become useful themselves. And of course, if you can't figure out how to do quarter tones with a slide, you need to have your head examined.

if you've ever heard of the echo cornet where it's got a "fourth valve" persay. it simply shifts the exit of the sound into a "muted" section to make a pseudo echo sound, you could have the 6th or 4th valve do that. or do that old squeaker trick with the 6th valve.
@TrentHamilton

That's a pretty good idea. I've got a spare flugelhorn bell I could use for that purpose.

4 valve - perfect 4th 5 valve - quarter tone 6 valve - eighth tone 48 notes in a single octave, not to mention the sudden allowance to use most world scale alterations ,the capability to play most traditional world music on a cheap experimental horn. That would very entertaining. I may be a bit biased given my degree has a focus on microtonal studies though. No matter the end result cheers mate for making amazing content and coming up with fun and inventive ideas.

I think the 6th valve should connect to the 5th valve. That way, when you press both of those, the sound goes around in a circle, the trumpet plays itself, and the rest of us don't have to hear it.

4th valve goes to second bell, but unlike an echo cornet, have a small bell from a pocket trumpet, something you can put a mute in.5th valve lowers it a 4th, a la standard baritone. 6th valve, quarter tone.
@FnkBssGroov63
@FnkBssGroov63 4 года назад
My First thought was , just connect the second set as "Normal" because you can change keys down by 1/2 steps and use the first set to play normally in what ever key you've transposed to . Then you said 1/4 step and I thought ,, OK. (4th,1/4,1/2) or even ( 4th,1/4, 5th )
@brettclark4096
@brettclark4096 7 лет назад
I'd say standard fourth valve, fifth would be like a flat first so that 4+5 drops it a fifth, and maybe a flat half step for the sixth, it would make the C# dead in tune and with the fifth would make low F in tune. W/ the fourth valve, all the other notes are possible with weird fingering and fourth valve, but this is also coming from a tuba player who needs to know these things for low range. A lot of five valve tubas have the flat first setup to accompany the fourth valve and give more alternate fingerings to improve tuning when needed, but that also isn't a focus of your trumpet. Cool video!
@mal2ksc

I agree with making it into a Don Ellis special with a quarter-tone valve, and the perfect fourth valve. However, I think you should make the further away cluster your right hand cluster, with the standard 2-1-3 semitone pattern, and the one closer to your face the left hand cluster. Then you can make the _sixth_ valve the perfect fourth because it's already set up to take a long slide, the fifth valve your quarter-tone because it's set up to take a very short slide (you may actually have to solder one in place, there may not be room for a conventional slide), and the fourth valve, where the bell section attaches, can be used to switch between two different bells. That way you can switch between muted and open with a simple flick of a valve. Just hook the second bell to the point where air comes out of the fourth valve when depressed, and block up the return tube so it doesn't leak. It might end up looking something like this, except with a piston valve doing the switching instead of a rotary: www.schillerinstruments.com/wp-content/uploads/2014/02/bandleader-doublebell-1.jpg This also lets you use more of the parts from the second World's Cheapest Trumpet.

I like the horn and tuba schemes. In either case you have a flat alternative to at least 1 and 2, especially helpful as you can't push out the 1 and 3 slides easily while playing. In these schemes you have a combination that puts you into Eb, so you can play the Vaughan Williams Pastoral Symphony (3rd) natural trumpet solo with the flat written Bb harmonics.

Another idea: chop some tubing off to make it in C by default, then the 6th valve puts it into Bb by dropping it a whole step. Next, the fifth valve drops it another half step to A. The other four can act as a standard four valve instrument, dropping it a 2, 1, 3, and 5 semitones sequentially. This seems like the most practical idea. Also, since it will be used with the 6th valve depressed in Bb most of the time, the valves should be tuned to that, not open in C.

When non-compensating tubas add extra valves, the 4th valve is usually 5 semitones (obviously) and the 5th valve is usually a flat 2 semitones, replacing the 1st valve in the lower register (where physics starts being a problem and 1st is sharp). A bit of research on the 6th says it's usually a flat semitone, replacing the 2nd, but I like your idea of quarter tones.

You should do the old squeaky toy in the slide trick with the sixth valve. It would be so much fun because unlike on a 3 valve trumpet, the 6 valve trumpet would still be fully functional and you wouldn't ever have to remove the squeaky toy.

@rodneyg.payton5017 7 лет назад
I think your quarter tone idea for the 5th valve may be a great choice. Not only would it provide the quarter tone capability you spoke of, but it also could be used to (in effect) provide a "compensating" function. By that, I mean that it could be also be depressed just for the purpose of making notes played with multiple valves play more in tune. It would lower the pitch more than a conventional 3rd valve trigger or "pinky" slide. However, it could be that the added 5th valve slide is already short enough to serve the purpose of quasi "compensating". (I haven't done the math on this.)

You should put a crap-ton of tubing on the sixth valve, to drop it an octave below c. It would be a little like a French Horn, because of the small mouthpiece and copious amounts of tubing.
@samwich6652
@samwich6652 7 лет назад
I think a binary tuning system could be cool, with the first valve taking it down a half step, the seconds taking it down a whole, the third taking it down 2 whole steps, the fourth taking it down 4, 8, 16... with 6 valves I see no reason that we can't have 2^6 configurations
@jeremiahcowling3837
@jeremiahcowling3837 7 лет назад
You could make the 5th valve like that of an F tuba or some Bb/C tenor tubas and make the 6th the quarter tone. It would make the most logical sense to have the "least used" valve be the last/6th in my opinion (if you can even have logical sense with this instrument). Another suggestion would be to have the 5th/6th valve put it into F, like a "reverse double French horn" or something like that.

I vaguely remember reading something about having a 5th valve lower by 2 whole steps to make for a better in tune version of the 2 and 3 valve combination, like how a standard 4th valve does for 1 and 3. That might have been on some strange 5 valve American style euphonium. Have valves 1-5 follow that standard, and 6 can be your quarter tone. Although I think Tk Garrett's comment about the echo cornet concept sounds cooler.

It's probably done by now, but 4th and 5 valves as you suggested. The 6th could become some sort of switch for the instrument to change keys. I'm not sure what key it would be. I guess A would be "easiest".

Keep 4, 5, and 6 as standard trumpet valves as they will be operated with the right hand. Valve 3 will be down a perfect 4th (like a standard 4th valve). 2 will be the quarter step as you suggested. 1 will feed off to a second bell facing a different direction.
@jeremyclifton1448
@jeremyclifton1448 7 лет назад
Or make all of the valves a half step but gradually lengthening as you go from 1 to 6 for correct intonation. It will be like trombone slide positions. 1st: no valves 2nd: 1 3rd: 1 2 4th: 1 2 3 5th: 1 2 3 4 6th: 1 2 3 4 5 7th: 1 2 3 4 5 6 I still prefer my first idea, but if you were making a second 6-valve, I think this should be the other idea.

I have a suggestion. Keep the first three valves, make the fourth valve like an F attachment so keep it the same, make the fifth valve a G flat attachment, that way you have a basically a bass trombone but up an octave and with all valves. The sixth valve could be an octave key, lowering the pitch a full octave so (pretending that a gigantic compensating valve system wouldn't be needed to make it really work) You would have a Trumpet and Valve Bass Trombone hybrid. It'd be kinda useless, especially without compensating valves, but it'd be cool.

Hi Trent! You should make the first three valves the same, the fourth valve be a fourth, fifth be a semitone all like you said. The only difference should be the sixth valve lead to an extra bell so then it can be the first six-valved double-belled trumpet!

My vote is to make the second set of valves fixed tunings. 6th valve held down converts the horn into an F horn. So that "tuning" (lol) slide would be the longest, and maybe need to be "manufactured." 4th and 6th together converts the horn into Eb (use the slide from the 1st valve of the second horn for the new 4th valve), and 4th/5th/6th together into D (keep the original 2nd valve from the second horn for the 5th valve). Other combinations would be possible. 5th valve alone puts the horn in A. 4th/5th puts the horn in G. Anyway, I'm not positive because I've never manufactured an instrument, but I think this would make for the least bit of manufacturing of slides. Just create some "locks" for the second valve block, make that 6th slide, and you'd have a versatile horn (albeit crappy quality) that any band director with transposition difficulties would love to have.

it might have been cooler if you had the larger bore valve section for the second set from the likes of a baritone/valve trombone/alto horn so as to give some body to the potential lower notes this will add to the instrument

You should just make the second block go down semitones, but the first one stay the same. That way, it could be a Bb/A/Ab/G trumpet. That would be pretty neat-o.

like a triple horn: 1-3 normal. 4 down a fourth, 5 UP a fourth or fifth (descant); the 6 can be a quarter tone, but maybe make it a "compensating" valve to help with intonation. Yeah $40, BUT maybe you are on to something to patent. Also there are six valve tubas too as a model.
@Reckless150681
@Reckless150681 7 лет назад
Fourth could be like what you said. Fifth could go to a tube with a vibrating membrane (recreating the tromboon sound). Sixth should go to a rubber duck or something.

4th valve should be like a euphonium, which brings it down to F, 5th valve should bring it down to concert E-flat, and the 6th should bring it down 1 whole octave.

I have a Bb/A horn, and I sometimes really miss that A side on my trumpet. So I think it would be nice to have a valve that lowers the pitch by a bit over a semitone, to essentially bring the instrument into the key of A. This makes playing A or E parts much easier than on a Bb trumpet, and it could help with the tuning of certain notes that are naturally off-tune. For example, the low D could then be played in-tune with 2+3+4, which is what I do on my horn (except it's called a G then, because horn player read in F). Let me know if you want to see pictures of the valve configuration on my horn as inspiration.

It would be cool if you could put a really long tube on the sixth valve and have it function as a lower octave key

do it like a six valve f tuba. 1 2 3 4 are the usual. 5 is so that 1 3 4 and 5 can play a concert c below the lowest overtone in tune. 6 is so that 1 and 6 can go down a minor third perfectly.(or something like that. some professional showed me his instrument once and that's what I remember.)

Since you now have an extra bell, with another trumpet you could build a trumpet with two bells that lays in stereo. :-)

In the sixties someone was playing a four or five valve trumpet - one valve was a quarter tone. He was hot! I think his last name was Ellis.

@mattm8077 7 лет назад
first 3 are standard, 4th should lower it a 4th (like a typical 4th valve) and 5th should lower it a tritone (so a 4th and a half) and 6th should lower it a 5th

You should make it on the first suggestion. You should also make two trumpets connected to the same mouthpiece so u can duet with yourself

My idea is that 4 lowers it a perfect 4, 5 lowers it a major 3rd like the thumb valve on tubas, and the 6th valve... maybe that quarter tone? Maybe an augmented 4? I'm not really sure, but that's just my instinct for 4 and 5.

hey trent, I worked out some valve lengths and fingerings to play chromaticcaly down to G below pedal C here are two of my suggestions: these lengths are a fraction of the whole length of the instrument v = valve v1 0.122462 v2 0.059463 v3 0.206246 v4 0.29 v5 0.4 v6 0.5 note finger off-tune (cents) C 0 0 B 2 0 Bb 1 0 A 12 +11 Ab 23 -8 G 13 +8 Gb 14 +2 F 6 -2 E 125 +6 Eb 126 -0.3 D 1235 -6 Db 1236 -0.4 C 346 +3 B 1346 +0.2 Bb 2456 -3 A 12456 +5 Ab 23456 +1 G 123456 +60 note: G is very sharp or v1 0.122462 v2 0.059463 v3 0.206246 v4 0.29175 v5 0.5874 v6 0.40236 note fingering tuning (cents) C 0 0 B 2 0 Bb 1 0 A 12 +11 Ab 23 -8 G 13 +8 Gb 14 0 F 34 +0.3 E 5 0 Eb 1234 +2 D 1236 -9 Db 45 +8 C 145 -1.4 B 156 +6 Bb 2356 -8 A 12356 +0.3 Ab 23456 -19 G 123456 0 note: G is used as calibration, which makes Ab pretty flat also: v6 is shorter than v5, so you may want to swap them, and my v3 is made so that the fingerings 23 and 13 are both the same amount of cents away from their goal tone I have an excel file which i used to come up with these lists

A five valve trumpet is already crazy! Making the 6th valve mute the trumpet so you can play "tremolo drills" with it would be completely useless and hillarous!
@greatvib3s

i think you should make the 4th valve lower it a 4th, 5th valve lower it a long wholestep (to compensate for sharpness when going lower), and 6th valve half step. imho
@gaussfrigate970

Do it like a F tuba. Fourth is a perfect fourth, Fifth is a major third, Sixth is a major second, tuned differently. I know it's a bit odd but it seems the most logical to me.

Make it like a french horn. First set is in BFlat, but second set is still full/half/1.5 step config but in the key of F.

I think you should make the 4 fourth valve like the 4 valve of a euphonium. the fifth valve a quint-valve and the sixth valve a valve with a mute build in it, like the old fashion cornets?

Maybe adjust some of the valves where tuning issues could be fixed from valve problems (like the euphoniums 4th valve)

The first three valves as they normally are. The second three valves should be: V4: V1+V3 (5 semitones) V5: V2+ V3 (4 semitones) V6: V3+v3 (6 semitones.)

Everyone would of course want a trumpet with an octave (down) key, which would add hilarity via terribleness, but I think there's an opportunity here. If you have valves of pitches 3 , 1.5 , and 4.4 times the second valve length, 1+2+3 tuned to a tritone, can add with the second valve set to be almost perfectly in tune on all those second configurations, with all keys (plus the normal tritone flattening) being less out of tune to an octave, than just 1+2+3 is to a tritone. That's a bit of a sentence, there, isn't it? You effectively can change the trumpet from Bb to E. As a bonus, you get some quarter tones in normal range. (You'll need to put the second third valve a tad flatter to do that, meaning you'll need to be able to tune to that quarter tone between a 3rd and a 4th. It's close, at least.) Who knows what combinations you could get by *mixing* the valve blocks.

You should make the sixth valve a second bell. Or an echo bell like on an echo cornet.
