hooking a bottom plow to it could also cut fire breaks

A good set of discs or a disc plow would also work, especially with the soil he has.

I agree with a disk or a plow for grass fires farmers have been using them to put out field fires forever. He could add a storage box to the top for gear and weight also.

Even a small flail mower or finish mower. That’s what I have at my farm in WV. About one week a year we will get the perfect conditions for a field fire with a discarded cigarette or a lightning strike.

That is a really nice pump setup. Instead of stones as your counter weight, another water tank would add capacity to your setup. An IBC with the fittings to hook up to the pump would give you another 275 gallons.

That setup is awsome ! Was a volunteer in the 80s . Only had to do a little woodland firefighting . We had a military six by with a 1,000 gallon tank . Worst fire was at super low temps and we had to hand deploy 1,200' of 4" through a clear cut with a stiff breeze of up to 120 MPH winds . Wind shift was only reason we were able to stop it , DNR does not keep any equipment near us . So if we did not stop it , it would have consumed thousands of homes and businesses . Was a rough day / night . Very well thought out setup young man .

Cody. Counter balance on back with a mower for grass fires. Maybe you can figure out a way to mount another tank over mower(still seeing what your doing) and maybe a roof tank.(keeping eye on cntr of gravity) 350-400 gal max now. 10/4 on having hand tools, too. 5 gallon jug of ice water too.

Rick Allman I agree with your Idea about the a extra storage tank on the back but correct me if my idea isn't feasible because I don't know a lot about tractor implements but my thought was.to build a larger tank than the fronts but build it on top of a 3 or 4 bottom plow so you would alway use the water from the front tank first but have as wide of plow as easily plowed in a hurry using the weight of the water to counter balance the weight of a full front tank and the weight of the water in back tank would assist the rear plow until empty that is but a 3 or 4 bottom plow would make a wider fire break while only using the same time as a single...not sure if that is feasible because I am not sure how much weight a 3 point hitch can lift weight wise but I would think a plow would make a better fire break than just mowing the grass?? And of course maybe only a two bottom would work that would of course depend on the individual tractor and its capabilities but if you designed it right you could have the setup ready for action parked in an easily accessible place during fire season so in case of a fire you could pull right up to it and hook up and go in just a few mins. because having the worlds best fire equipment in the world is useless if it is parked in the back of the barn with everything sitting in front of it so it all has to be moved before you can even hook up to it. I know if I was living at a place like Cody has, I would definitely have a fire rig ready to deploy at a moment's notice if not faster.

I am a retired heavy equipment operator, and I have driven backhoes and large front end loaders on paved roads at high-speed‘s and I will tell you they rock back-and-forth really bad front to back. I noticed you had the tank strapped to the back of the fork Assembly, I would strap it down to the forks them selves on the front side of the tank because if you start rocking back-and-forth that tank will come off I guarantee it. I would hate to see any harm come to you or your equipment especially when responding to a fire.

I sure would like to see you put a 6 foot disc on the back so you could cut a fire line. As an ex dozer operator that used to do site prep and controlled burns I am biased towards taking away the fuel by means of a fire line. I know a disc on the tractor is really only good for cutting lines in fields but in your case with so much road frontage i might just keep a 12 to 15 foot fire line cut all the time along the road frontage and maybe the woodline also.

Caulk and bolt that false top down and fill it with water. have your hard suction line run to that. All it takes is a few seconds to turn the valve and suction the water from your auxiliary tank. Could add another 100 gallons to your water capacity. This is such a cool idea, every tractor owner should have one. keep up the great videos. You are the best channel on RU-vid!!

WATERAX has a long and exciting history, the origin of the company being the Watson Jack & Co. which was founded in 1898 by Montreal native John Colquhoun Watson Jack. In 1925, he introduced a powerful 200 psi portable fire pump called the WAJAX (an acronym of Watson Jack’s name). After Watson Jack & Co. and its F.H. Hopkins subsidiary were acquired by B.J. Coghlin & Co. Ltd. in 1954, the operations of the two newly acquired businesses were merged to form a single subsidiary. This subsidiary was titled Watson Jack Hopkins Ltd. until 1959 when it was renamed Wajax Equipment Ltd. In 1964, Wajax Ltd. acquired Pacific Marine’s fire division and changed its name to Pacific Pumpers Inc. This move solidified Wajax Ltd.’s position as North America’s leading forest fire protection products manufacturer. That year, the company also introduced the MARK-3® brand, which rapidly became the standard wildland portable fire pump used by forestry agencies around the world.

Hey Cody, nice vid. I would recommend the water tank at the back or both on the front and back, tools and storage on the back or front. Your front loader reaches a long way in front, meaning the tracktor must be balanced if you get my meaning. I would have it all on a quick conect as well. Thank you so much for the idea. I will work on one for myself too. Thank you.

Nice rig. How about a video on what people can do to help “fireproof” their homes? I’d bet a lot of the homes that get destroyed by wildfires would have a much better chance of survival with some modifications to their property. Keep up the good work. Thanks to you, your family and all the other volunteers across the country that help others for nothing but your own personal reasons. I’m sure a great many people out there don’t realize that the vast majority of firefighters and EMS providers across this country are all volunteers.

Great work! A lot of thought put into this. Consider mounting long handle tools vertically in order to avoid them getting caught/broken on trees and other obstacles.
@OldSneelock
@OldSneelock 6 лет назад
I think it is a great rapid response unit. With your normal work/weight box on the back you can use the quick hitch to attatch the forks, pick up the skid, and be gone in 5 or 10 minutes. In my opinion having the hose run up to the cab is much better than a nozzle affixed to the tank. The control is in your hand. Very flexible as to aim and volume control. 5 minutes on site is better than an extra 1000 gallons. Mrs. W and Jack are already checked out on the big rig and can roll that out as back up if needed. I do like the suggestion for discing a fire break. It might cause erosion problems if it is kept year round. Having the option of plowing or discing a qick break would be nice. Getting expensive, and not worth slowing down the quick response a lot, but another tractor with an 8 foot rototiller would be faster and more thorough than a disc or plow. 😆😆 Too bad you had to trade off the dozer. 😊
@sirkouzentoff7025
@sirkouzentoff7025 6 лет назад
Thank you for videos like these can you please do more on firefighting gear and techniques, the more you spread the word maybe the safer and more controllable we can make these wildfires be. They're getting out of hand each year and I feel every home owner should be prepared and every large property owner should be more and to be ready for it. I especially try to be after a few situations by myself.

Saw one quick attack rig that was a ATV with a 25 gallon tank strapped on and a 5gpm electric pump to a pressure washer wand. Grass fire do not need huge amounts of water if you can hit the right side of the fire. For the farmers that have a sprayer rig you can convert them to fire rigs easily as they are already mobile tanks with pumps

Yanmar tractor? Honda pump motor? What happened to "Buy American"? Just saying... The back weight box - why rocks? Why not another 500 liters of water? But all in all it is a very good concept for the land owner or first responder to get ahead of the game in an emergency.
@crazyjdkid
@crazyjdkid 6 лет назад
The Mad Man well a John Deere would have a Japanese made Yanmar engine in it. And there aren't very many small engine manufacturers in the US anymore, especially commercial duty ones. The Briggs dont hold up too well in commercial service, many of them are Chinese made anyway. Briggs commercial line is manufactured in Japan. The Honda GX series is arguably the most reliable and well made small engine produced today.

Mr.Wranglerstar while we are on the whole wild land firefighting topic I would suggest that you take a look at a Duece and a half ( 2.5 Ton ) Military truck, it would be able to tackle many of your jobs around the homestead as well as wild land firefighting and if you get the option to aquire a multifuel truck, I would highly recommend getting it and the bonus is that they are for sale at a reasonable price.

Question Cody do you have a spare water supply near the house? you can load up from your pond but it is a fare way from your home and by the time you have filled up from your pond and got back there disaster could have struck (hope that never happens). Your small water pump seems to produce more water than you require for your daily use, if this is so then the extra water could be piped off into some other tanks.

Can not find any fault on being so proactive, yes, the setup may change with usage and experience gained while using this setup, like different straps, more water capacity etc, well done Cody. yes, if someone tells me to evacuate because of uncontrolled fire, i wont go, i cleaned all shrubbery and trees from directly against my house, have good quality hoses at each outside water source, as well as a swimming pool full of extra water if needed. Even. Though in south africa, with brick houses, no fire danger where we are, you never know what may happen, be sure to have something set up for each type of fire, electrical, oil(in kitchen) etc.

I worked on a cattle ranch in the middle of nowhere B.C. There idea of fire preparedness was an old Briggs water pump that would chuck its spark plug when it got hot (it was always fun trying to find the plug so you could screw it back in if it wasn't to hot) and the pick up line thrown in the creek. LOL lets just say it was not a well thought out plan of attack cause half the time you had to go find the pump and dig it out of a shed here or there. Nice set up Cody.((

with all that grassland you have it would be a very good idea to bring a plow as your counterweight to cut line if you have to. or atleast have one on standby if it gets out of your capability and you have to fall back and put a line around your house and work the fire from there.

I like your videos, and the fact that you are a professional wild fire fighter. Tractor looks good, one thing I am thinking is that the counter weight should be another 100 gal. water tank that could be used after the front tank is dry. Once the front tank is dry the counter weight can be less, so the counter weight water could help put out a fire. Great video and info.

Most farmers have a single axis water trailer. So i´d use that as a counter weight which should increase the water capacity drastically. Also it would be interesting to know if the attachment pump can suck water in while spraying. So you could either attach a hose to the tank in the back or to a watersource nearby and make it use a natural firehydrant ;) jm2c

Around here, you can find leather motorcycle coats for $20 or so in the thrift shops. Would one of those work as fire protection (assuming the polyester lining were taken out)?

What did you do with your other fire skids that you had? The ones you built.

do you still have the old 6x6 fire truck, & the other structure fire type truck??? i love the old 6x6 we had on our volunteer dept. i didn't mind it at all. but some, i don't want to take that old 6x6 i want to take the other newer truck. the way i look at it an old 500gpm pumper can still do a lot of work.

What about using a rear 3-point link forks for the tank? might be slightly more stable and could maybe use a rake on front?

Have you looked at a Ultra High Pressure Pumps? Few thousand PSI @ 15 to 20 gpm. Very very effective and helps save water.

Cody must have been a boy scout - be prepared. This looks like a great setup for emergency fire fighting. That much hose however will waste half your tank: 500' of 1.5 inch hose is 46 gallons, and 250' of 1 inch hose is 11 gallons. Still half is better than none, and may make the difference.

Cody, why not make your rear weight a water tank say like 350 gal with a rack on top to hold the gear. I am sure you would have to build it to have a 3pt hitch and be able to put baffles in it. I just feel it would make it easier on the initial attack with more water to begin with. I remember when I was in the fire service and life just felt better on structure protection when the tanker checked on scene. Of course I know I am in North Carolina and folks are a lot closer together. I know it is harder out west where the populous of people is a lot thinner.

Yes get a used farm watering/ferilizer tank. Maybe they make them so the tractor can drive a spray pump? A lot of water trucks I see watering grass by roadways have left and right nozzles. that could be mounted the rear water tank, with valves to control flow near cab. Finally, With this setup, for people with pasture land, a farming disc II'm sure would be helpful to plow under grass to create a barrier. If you're really concerned perhaps you could have irrigation well dug on remote parts of property, Where a diesel/gas pump could be tractored out and lines run from that?

Cody are you going to teach Jack and Mrs W to follow you up with the skid mount in the truck to mop up behind you? You could have yourself a nice little firefighting force there.

how were you able to get the forks for a yanmar? Ive been looking for a while now and nothing pops up. Did you put a different quick-tach on there or did it come that way?

Just another thought, I don’t know what your financial situation is but if you could purchase a box blade for the back end you could also cut fire breaks and possibly attach one or two 50 gallon cans or tanks of water for extra water also onto the box blade.
