@Snowstorm Because most of those are not developed nations, by developed nations standards Finland is still pretty high. Interesting to note though that as developed nations become richer they often have an increase in suicide rates, Ireland with the 9th highest standard of living in the world and much higher than say the USA or UK, yet has a suicide rate far higher than most developed nations, but when Ireland was seen by as relatively poor by developed nations standards back in the 70's and earlier, their suicide rate was far lower.
Not true. Finland's suicide rates have gone drastically down in 30 years. We aren't living in the 90's anymore. Watch the video " Comparison suicide rates by countries/Country suicide comparison." 62 highest suicide countries and Finland is not even mentioned. The highest suicide countries are: The 1st Russia. The 2nd South Korea. The 3rd Kazakstan. The 4th Ukraine and the 5th Japan.
I think the happiness index actually shows the expected life prospects of the individual at birth in the country in which she/ he was born. And based on these, the best place to be born is Finland. They are the first for the 6th year. Congratulations.
Since I started travelling with my children, we've gained a new perspective for Australia. We often do the cultural sites where we're seeing the non-tourist parts of a country and seeing the way they live. We realise that Australia is better in many regards and have a new appreciation.
The Scandinavian countries topping happiness indexes is a joke. I think they are basing these studies on few parameters like education, housing, healthcare and purchasing power. However, these factors solely does not determine happiness. It is more complex than that, things like Spiritual happiness, emotional balance, family support, social pressure all play a part. I have few Finnish and Swedish friends, all of them are in therapy for some or other kind of depression. I wouldn't characterize them as "happy" People. In contrast, the people of Nepal, one of the poorest countries in the world, are much happier in comparison.
If China was the happiest country on earth then one quarter of the Australian population would NOT be Chinese. Seriously though who in the right mind would be happy to live in a communist country?
