Traveling to officially the happiest country in the World on 2023 and for the last 6 years running.
Welcome to Finland (or Suomi), a country in northern Europe, famous for its cold climate and polar nights, it has consistently been named the most happy country on Earth.
Nestled high up in Scandinavia, Finland is somewhere we have wanted to travel to for a long time, in order to find out why people here are so happy? What is it about life in Finland and in the Nordic countries of Scandinavia that is so good?
Finland, alongside its neighbour Denmark, has consistently topped the United Nations’ most prestigious poll, The World Happiness Report, in all six areas of life satisfaction: income, healthy life expectancy, social support, freedom, trust and generosity. It has always fascinated us what separates these Scandinavian countries from the rest of our planet.
We traveled to Helsinki, on a boat from Tallinn, Estonia, to stay with our friends. They moved to Espoo, a suburb of Helsinki a year ago, and with their help we wanted to try and learn more about life here in Finland and what makes it so special.
It can't be all because of the saunas, right? ;)

Finland does not have a socialist government and is not located in Scandinvia, other than that quite accurate. Helsinki area is great in the summer especially because of the Baltic sea, beaches, rocks and islands so conveniently a walking distance from the center. The happiness is based on realistic expectations and a good chance to succeed fairly well in life, no matter what your background is. People have fair opportunities and even if you totally fail, you will still not end up in the street (well some still do, homelessness will be eradicated by 2027 if and when the current trend continues).

In my town in Indiana the local public library has 3D printers, laser printers, FAX machines, music rooms, meeting rooms, special areas for kids, etc. You can rent DVD and Blue Rays as well as books on tape and braille books. Almost all of it is free. You have to pay for the consumables for the printers, pay for the FAXs, and a few other things, but otherwise it's all free. When I first went to it, I was pleasantly shocked. It is amazing. Kind of like a smaller version of the Helsinki library. Thanks for the video - wonderful stuff!

Nice video, all in all. Just one minute correction: Finland is not in Scandinavia, technically speaking. Scandinavia is the peninsula formed by Sweden & Norway. The correct term that includes Finland is "Fennoscandia". There, the nit has been picked, so to speak :D
@Gittas-tube
@Gittas-tube 8 месяцев назад
Hi there! Yes, Fennoscandia is the correct geographical term, but the Nordic countries is the term used nowadays when it comes to the way of life, to the Nordic welfare state model, culture, shared history and other values. For example, the 'allemansrätten" (all men's right) exists in several Nordic countries, if not in all of them. The Nordics include Sweden, Norway, Denmark, Finland, Iceland, sometimes the Feroe Islands as well as Greenland, two autonomous parts 'belonging' to Denmark.

@MattandJulia

Fair enough 🙂 We read extensively about the ‘Nordic Model’ before arriving. Which we always thought was categorised as ‘social democracy’, because of the large public sectors and welfare state among other things, but apologies if we were off the mark there 🙂

@minime7375
@minime7375 8 месяцев назад
@@MattandJuliaIt’s a gray area but I’d qualify all Scandinavian countries as socialist, it has nothing to do with the form of government like the OP says, they can be monarchies and have the entire state running on socialist policies. Sweden is a monarchy for example, not a republic but it’s still a social-democrat country. I don’t think you were off with your assessment.
@quarters-eye8922

@@minime7375 They were way off. By the way, there is no such thing as a socialist Democracy.
@akuankka321876
@akuankka321876 8 месяцев назад
@@minime7375Finland's welfare state model is nothing like socialism. Finland has mixed economy, which integrates ideas from capitalism and socialism into a single unified model. The fact that you pay high taxes doesn't make your country socialist. It would be nice if people first do little research what socialism actually is by definition. "Socialism is a social and economic doctrine that calls for public rather than private ownership or control of property and natural resources. According to the socialist view, individuals do not live or work in isolation but live in cooperation with one another. Furthermore, everything that people produce is in some sense a social product, and everyone who contributes to the production of a good is entitled to a share in it. Society as a whole, therefore, should own or at least control property for the benefit of all its members." So yeah, there is not a single nordic or scandinavian country which is actually socialist and which only has public (state-owned in this context) ownership of all things produced and owned.

I can understand why Finns are happy. It's safe - I think the crime rate is the lowest in the world, and as the guy said, things work, people have a social conscience and choose to buy local produce rather than imported stuff (carbon footprint). Well done to Finland and the Finns.

Finland are built with more love for the finnish people than what is done in other nations. That is the reason. The typical finnsh mentality is melancolic but they are still in general more happy for the reason I wrote. I am Swedish and my government does not love the Swedish people as much. Basically Finland is a very good country. I hope that the current government in Sweden will make Sweden better but for that we have to wait and see.

I think you have nailed many possible explanaitions. I have yet another possible one. For a long time Finland used to be a poor colonial province that was hit regularly by famines, warfare, some oppression etc. Independence, industrialization, peace, stabillity, higher incomes etc are pretty new to Finland. The past is still not too far away and has not fallen into oblivion quite yet. Perhaps for that reason the mere fragrance of a flower can generate a deep sense of gratitude. Gratitude for just being alive, for having a country to call ones own, for being able to grow flowers and just for their beauty.

I experienced the sunlight issue (if you want to call it that) in Norway/Sweden the first 2 weeks of June this year. One day I woke up at 9:30 and I was freaking out thinking I was about to miss breakfast at the hotel. Then I realized it was only 9:30 at night and not the morning. It took me several days to get used to it. I took a picture of the twilight at around 12:30 in the morning and asked people what time they thought that was. Almost every time they thought it was about 3 hours earlier than it was.

Well the metal culture have developed nicely here. As i were kid and teenager at 80s and 90s things were very different. Metal were more of a underground thing and sometimes you might got fights for being metalhead. 90s were time of Eurodance music and basicly if you listened metal you were the different from others or bigger masses. I had long hair already in 90s and in weekend nights walking in night life scene some random people might come to pick up a fight just becouse of that so you really had to be a tough guy to not get your ass kicked. I´m glad that things have got lot better as years gone by. I still am long hair dude and if i walk in the night life at the weekends these days, absolutely no-one comes to pick a fight for my appearance. Someone might even stop to say call shirt or cap if i have some band t-shirt and AC/DC cap on my head. After some global succes of our own metaö bands ower the world have changed the situation and metal has began to be more more tolerated and popular. People younger than myself have grown among that succes time and we are proud of finnish metal production. We sure have huge bands these days but we developed for that quite late. The athmosphere at metal avents are grate. People in there are intelligent and can behave. There usually are not misbehaving people hardly ever unlike in some other festivals. And like the biggest metal festival Tuska that is every year in Helsinki are no problems and people in there are more of a like one big family. So things have turned to so much better over the decates.

I think small poulation is key. Just five million people in a territory that's larger than Britain, where there's over sixty million people. On the other hand, that doesn't explain why Denmark takes turns with Finland as no. 1, because while being only five million peole also, it's pretty densely packed. Another reason I believe in, is the four seasons. Many people feel a renewal when they change, even though many of us may get a little gloomy when the darkness goes on and on, it's still much better than perpetual summer.

Strictly speaking as somebody who moves from Toronto Ontario to Calgary, Alberta, Canada, the comments about the light in the summer, and the winter is funny. You do notice it. You go from what you consider a normal light to extraordinary amounts of sunshine to extraordinary amounts of darkness. I cannot even imagine what it would be like in a country like Finland, which is significantly further north than Calgary.

Finland and Iceland are not in Scandinavia, that consists of Sweden, Norway and Denmark. All five are called the Nordic countries. Finland is unique, part of FennoScandia peninsula. I find it very funny when RU-vidrs come here for a day or 10 hours to "get to the bottom of" Finland's happiness. Maybe you should reserve more time fot that. It is not the simplest task.

Finland salary is 2 times bigger than here in Spain (1500 €/month on average). It's quite struggling to live here, when you've been unemployed 16 years because lost my job just before the 8 year financial crisis (2008- 2015) and then later wasn't hired even though I was an IT Systems & Networks administrator, because of ageism in enterprises which don't hire people over 40, when it's difficult to heat your home in winter, when it's tough to buy groceries, when it's tough to even afford a subway trip downtown... you can't be happy. Government doesn't care. No welfare because I have savings at the bank and I'm not supposed to qualify. Today news said that 130,000 jobs were created in 2023... but there are still 2.8 million unemployed people here.

Glad you enjoyed, but I need to mention few things... 1) Finland is Nordic, not Skandinavian. 2) We are not voted as the happiest country, its calculated based on many different statisticks. 3) In Oodi you pay (little) something for the 3d prints, its goes to buying more materials for the future

Harriet and I have been to Helsinki. in both the summer and winter months. Experienced the polar nights. Enjoyed the islands tour cruise. I think the reason why the Finnish are considered the happiest people in the world is that many of the essentials of daily life are taken care of. Less anxiety to deal with. Great video. that brings back good memories. Hope it does for you. Sending much❤ love from Richmond, Va. Harriet, Jim and Yuki

One thing that strikes my mind is that many Russians appreciate the quality of foods and Helsinki's compactness compared to Moscow or St. Petersburg. From a Finns point of view we take many things for granted but comparing to our eastern neighbor we have a deep appreciation for our working democracy and trust in authorities and other Finns. These "basic" things play a huge role in the end. Nevertheless I also know a bunch of Russians that moved to Finland precisely because of the war and Russia going towards autocracy beyond return and I wish them all a warm welcome.

Partly Finland is located on the Scandinavian peninsula. Finland 🇫🇮 is a Nordic country with Sweden 🇸🇪 Norway 🇸🇯 Denmark 🇩🇰 and Iceland 🇮🇸 politically, economically, religiously, culturally and geographically. They are all members of the Nordic council. They are all capitalist countries with some social elements. All of them are among the ten best and happiest countries in the world.

@@MattandJulia It is not a common thing, but not quite unique either. There are basically two types: bars that have realized they could also run a public sauna and public saunas that have realized they could also run a bar. There are at least two really nice ones with the latter concept in Helsinki, I have visited several times. The most famous is Löyly by the sea which is a sauna with a restaurant. Of the other concept there has been a good one in Töölö.

Finland nor the other nordic countries are not socialist. The means of production are not socially owned, and there are pretty much no regulations about it. Our government is pro-capitalist and our most significant companies are listed corporations. Yes, our taxes are high and social security is extensive, but that alone doesn't make Finland socialist.

Then to can take the train to Oslo, Norway, from there the train to Copenhagen, then you have taken 2 more capitals in Norden. Btw it looks simular between Sweden and Finland, lot of woods and lakes sometime a little willage then more woods and lakes, don't buy this that they Finland the country of 1000 lakes, only in my county there are 1000 lakes then we've the rest of Sweden...

What i took away from my 2 visits to the nordic countries is that people there are just chill. They arent difficult, they dont get annoyed instantly, they dont bother other people. Which i know a lot of ppl see as antisocial behaviour, but they just dont seem to have the need to butt into other ppls daily life, and that is so freeing in a way. Also the closeness to nature, clean air and water. They also arent selfish. You pay some more taxes to know that everyone around you has a chance at a decent life, who wouldnt want to do that? Seems like common sense really.

Another possible explanation might be equality of the Finnish society. Contrary to many other countries Finland never had a domestic aristocracy. Nor some small superrich elite. When Finland achieved independence in the beginning of the 20th century all people in Finland were basically equally very poor. From the get go Finland applied policies (inspirered by socialdemocracy) that managed to lift the whole population from poverty to middle class in an equal manner, without leaving anyone behind. And without creating a new aristocracy. Still today, there is not any destitute class. And there are basically no filthy rich people either. The whole population is just more or less equally middle class. I think that inclusiveness might have fostered a culture of trust and good relationships and hence also happiness

Finland is my favourite of those "Scandinavian" countries. Technically, not Scandinavian, nor is it Socialist, but a gem nevertheless. I just couldn't cope with the 6 months of horrendous weather. Otherwise, I would be quite happy. Heavy Metal is far more palatable than the music offered up by most of the bars in mainland Europe.

Many of the things below apply to all Nordic countries. Finns trust the system and the authorities. We also have a general sense of real freedom. Most of us do not pursue riches. Basic life is good enough and you don't have to work 12 hours a day for it. A lot of free time for family, friends and hobbies. Anyone has pretty good opportunities to live the life they want. Schools are all the same. The children of the rich, the poor, politicians and cleaners go to the same schools and do military service. The president often travels on regular scheduled flights. People have a general sense of security about the future. If you get sick or lose your job, you won't be alone, and you won't lose the rest of your life. However, Finland is far from paradise. There are many problems such as exclusion, suicides, mental health problems, substance abuse problems and so on.
