I have learned to not get too excited by "breakthroughs" because producing them at scale and at cost is a whole different thing. That being said, clearly, we are moving in the right direction and it is only a matter of time before this problem is solved, and ICE becomes put under the ground.

Any battery improvement and advance in their technologies are always welcome and are all great. The more the better. With that said, Lithium-Sulfur has already been solved, and they do have the full potential of 5 times the best current energy density because we already know that Sulfur can store 5 times more Lithium ions than any Nickel/Cobalt/Manganese/Aluminum combination. And the first company to start mass producing them with 3X the current best energy density, Lyten (who worked with the US military on it) has already broken ground in San Jose, California. They already have a 2 billion dollar order from an electric airplane manufacturer. And Drexel University made an even greater discovery (by accident, by the way) regarding Lithium-Sulfur chemistry. Theirs has been tested to 4,000 cycles with very little degradation. That's even higher than LFP life cycles.

Even a battery that only survives 200 charge cycles but can provide 4x the power density would be extremely useful, it’d simply need to be replaced every 6 months to 3-ish years depending on the amount of distance a driver travels. Two requirements would need to be met for this to be practical: 1. It *would* require the materials to be recyclable, which would lead to 2. The replaceable battery pack would have to be a lot less expensive than current battery packs, say $1000. The engineering challenge to make a battery replaceable at 6+ month intervals is not very tough at all. It would actually make the automakers extremely happy, they’d get repeated service visits and steady income from that, and would be a lot like going for an oil change and checkup on ICE vehicles. Consumers would be a lot happier knowing if they have a bad battery that it can be replaced quickly and easily, and not have major degradation concerns.

There are significant advancements, as thelimitingfactor has documented very well in RU-vid videos, the 4680 cells at Tesla, the BYD blade cells, CATL seems close on sodium-ion batteries that will be very inexpensive...all of these are or seem likely to be breakthroughs. The huge growth in EV production last year at BYD is likely mostly because of their new blade battery. But as a rule all of these in the lab announcements from people other than the major battery cell companies are BS and will never be seen.

A heavy Battery does not become lighter during the flight, which means that enegy consumption is higher, increasing the cost of the flight. As with all technology, what is here now is not the best - technology improves over time, and in this current age technology has a doubling life of months, compared to years a decade ago, and decades early in the 20th century when technology started to blossom. Therefore battery technology will improve exponentially over the next year, with costs reducing and capacity, energy density, and longevity increasing - expect nothing less...

We had our batteries tested at Argonne National Laboratory as well and it is just a step to quantify some data from our own labs. I had dozens of batteries tested at different depth of discharge and could easily have an end of life at 100 cycles or taking very little Ah out and still going at 20,000 cycles. There are lots of battery "experts" out there that have little or no empirical observations from working in the battery industry. I also would be interested in the nominal voltage at C-rate to gain another data point.

I hope it works as much as I hope any of the developing technologies. I really hope that they can also improve the charge cycles. More cycles will be important if the vehicles are to last any amount of time. I do suppose 1,200 miles per charge would equate to approximately 1.2 million miles, but who is going 0-100-0 for all there cycles?

good point. its a breakthrough for track vehicles like tesla semi. for passenger cars the current lfp batteries with 250 miles of range are good enough. even sodium batteries are good becouse the biggest scope now is to make batteries as cheap as posible to be able to reach a a price of 25k for a car like tesla model 3.
@viadharmawheel

I would think they would half the battery pack as 600 miles is good enough, and in fact it probably has to only be 40% to obtain it. The key like all new tech proven in a lab is it commercially viable -- produced easily in quantity and holds up across millions of vehicles.

even a 35k usd tesla model 3 is cheap considering the price of gas in europe and the periodic service cost of a ice car you make economies of over 20k usd for every 100k miles driven in a ev.

All the economic advantages are great, and I certainly agree with the Model 3. 250 miles is enough for most, but more is better. I agree with making the battery smaller and still having great range. Many economy cars still have decent range such as my wife’s Mazda 3. It can go approximately 440 miles per tank, and it does not have a large tank. I have an EV6 and I can travel EPA rated 274 per charge. I have done better, I have done worse. Usually around 200-220 miles per charge as I am not going to 100% unless I am starting a large road trip, and even then it is just for the initial charge. I would like more range, however I also drive more than the average driver and it would be more convenient for me. I drive an average of 25k-35k mile a year. Having that extra range would be helpful. Do I need 1,200 or so, no, but 400-500 usable would be nice. It would make it so I would only have to stop on some of my longer travels, rather than 2-3 times or more. The nice thing about the EV6 is under the best conditions it charges very fast. If it came down between range and charge speed, I would take the faster charge speed every time. In an ideal world, I would like both.

Great stuff if this becomes reality. Especially for utility vehicles and light trucks for tradies. However, at 4-5x the storage, charging times will be unrealistic unless you have a 3 phase supply.

Unlikely to see the light of day in the foreseeable future. Batteries with much higher energy density have been possible for some time. However, they are also potentially very dangerous if something goes wrong. Making them absolutely safe so the manufacturer doesn't get sued out of existence when they catch fire or even blow up, is the issue.

I imagine one would have to have crazy clean air fed into the battery. Or, contaminants will ruin the party. But, I'm no chemist. When I hear about these very high performance batteries, I think aircraft and supercars. That is the business case for them.

you should please get GPT o make a table of your favorite batteries, their arrival, their chances of success, and their applications. All these lengthy breathless wonders really don't tanks what is coming with what will work and when. I can get GPT to do that for me, but GPT (and therefore by extension I myself) will have no understanding about what it spits back to me...

If we can get more miles per weight of Lithium, that will have enormous benefit, as Lithium mining is environmentally destructive, and there is an enormous demand developing for it as the pace of switching to EVs gathers pace. Rather than using the improvement to increase range from 400 miles to 1,300 miles, instead stick with 400 miles, and reduce the size and weight and amount of Lithium needed. For a lot of people, even 400 miles range will be far more than they need except on rare occasions, and providing high capacity just to cope with rare occasions is a bit of a dilemma, perhaps one that can be met by rentable pre-charrged standardised long-journey plug-in packs?

Lithium Air and Aluminium air batteries are much less efficient than Lithium Ion because the have to pump air and usually need recycling more often. The same as Hydrogen Fuel cells they are more "fuel Cell" than battery. They don't last as long in terms of cycles (so far), but 1000 cycles would be good (if it is real and not just perfect lab conditions). Making Lithium air batteries high density is easy, its potential is close to the density of Hydrocarbons. They also require ALOT more Lithium which would be a huge problem. Personally I am VERY sceptical of all new technology claims, they may well have some place eg a hand removeable boost pack for long journeys, heavy plant or aviation but I doubt hey will replace current car technology any time soon.

Yeah, but I wouldn't say it's solved. 😉 I mean, seriously, there are nearly an infinite ♾️ way of making batteries, and a lot of them are technically "better," but an arguably more important issue is feasibility. With batteries as large and widespread as are required by the auto industry, scalability, longevity, and cost become far more important than power density.
