Towed by any car, suv, or motorcycle this small travel trailer is the world's lightest affordable trailer that you can buy in North America. You don't necessarily need a vehicle with a large towing capacity. You need a trailer small enough to tow with anything. This is the best of both worlds. A small camper like a teardrop, but made with fiberglass which is typically only found on larger ultra light travel trailers like Scamp trailers and Casitas. And stick around to the end of this video, we will be highlighting the two other lightest camper trailers on the market. All three of these trailers can be used for motorcycle camping and are small enough to fit in your garage.

I'm a retired art teacher living in Australia after the Vietnam War and 9 years US Army... never owned a trailer, just 2 VW Camper vans all through the 60's and one long wheel based Chevy I converted back in the 70's (2 sons ... before I was in the Army I was a Bump and Paint guy in Michigan,which has more boats than ANY state, so I was taught how to fix fiber glass. I built my tear drop with the floor being Marine grade plywood foam insulation under wire screen and then 3 layers of fiberglass. I sprayed it with "Tuff Coat" spray paint, which is a rubber like finish for pick up trucks. I used "Carriage bolts" through the floor into the 5 X 8 trailer frame so any time I can just unhook the battery box, unbolt the 8 bolts and lift the camper off the trailer to fix. I did put it on a friend's hoist to check it...looked fine after 2 years. I've repaired fiberglass boats and a few Chevrolet Corvettes some years ago... easy, just the gel coat matching it up to the old surface coat.

I like the factual and sensible approach that you take with presenting the product. You not only feature the pros, but you mention shortcomings. And you do this in a very professional way without having to resort to acting goofy, etc. Most importantly we get the information we need in order to learn about the product.

$10k for the low-end model isn't bad. I think the biggest appeal here is the towability as you can probably tow this even with a small 4 cylinder car (especially if it could be towed with a motorcycle). 40-50 lbs tongue weight is nothing. The problem with most other teardrops, even the Little Guy, is the weight. Some of those are about 1000 lbs which may exceed the towing capacity of some vehicles, but this is something I think you could tow with a small car even though most cars aren't designed for towing -- on weekends I think it would be fine as long as you don't have one of those cars with a tiny 1.5L turob engine but I think something like even a Honda Accord or Toyota Camry could be equipped to tow something like this.

As an owner of a teardrop trailer, these would be fine if they were MAYBE $5000. They suck if a summer thunderstorm rolls through the area. Have fun sitting inside a small box (been there done that). I took my air conditioner out so I could use the space for storage since it requires a generator to operate. I'm now eyeing a 6x12 tandem axle cargo trailer to camp in. You can fit a bed, a small table and chairs, and even cook inside if the weather turns crappy. There'll be PLENTY of space for two and a dog.

Probably not soon though, 'cause... you know truck payments? :) My dog is about 18 years old and we have taken him camping, but he's a bit wobbly so we haven't taken him a lot lately. If you do a video about taking the dogs, a couple of things you can include are: harnessing the dog while driving (honestly, I never did this, but some folks suggest it) and how to give them some freedom while keeping them on a leash (we strung a rope between two trees at about the height of a short leash and threaded the leash on the rope so they could run back and forth. One thing I forgot to point out. When you are looking at a trailer like this you get kind of caught up in the fact that inside it has enough space to do anything you want. But you need to remind yourself that there is not additional gear storage. This really isn’t a big deal it just means that you need to haul your gear in the trailer during transport. This means you will take out the gear and move it to the vehicle or outside when you get to the campsite. I said it’s not a big deal because if you’ve seen our teardrop our galley is really small. So we store most of our gear inside the cabin.

You sound like May and I. When we first started checking out Scamps we were wondering if it was for sound dampening. Then we thought maybe people liked the way it looked and felt. Haha. May and I at that time said "If we ever get a Scamp the first thing we are doing is removing that rat fur." Well, we don't think that way anymore. We instantly noticed the difference between the Scamp with no carpet and our teardrop. Huge difference in moisture management. And that is saying a lot when you think how large the scamp is in volume vs. our little teardrop. It is still tough for us though. We love the look of a carpet free wall, sometimes I still think we would go no carpet and accept our fate just to have a cleaner looking wall. And one bonus, it is a lot easier to wipe down clean if there is no carpet.

@PlayingwithSticks
@PlayingwithSticks 3 года назад
@@yokikokudou You know I always wondered why these manufacturers don't have to scuff up the aluminum and add some paint, powder coating, or anodize them. But, if you notice the highest priced trailers typically use untreated aluminum. Yes, there is a weight savings in aluminum but they also say they are corrosion resistant. So basically they don't rust. What happens is the aluminum will oxidize, but it actually protects the underlying unoxidized aluminum. Meaning what I showed in the video (the bar frame as you referred to it) will eventually get a white cover (oxidized) which prevents the aluminum from corroding. Hope this makes sense. But I don't get why so many only come with the horizontally opening windows. Any rain coming down at even the slightest angle could seep in to some degree. Same goes for the independent suspension. A small trailer like the Road Toad with independent suspension would be ideal to help reduce or limit bouncing travel concerns since they're so lightweight. Hadn't heard it these trailers. I had a much lighter trailer I pulled with my Yamaha Venture. It pulled it ok, but knocked off 35% of the gas mileage. With this trailer I would assume it uses much more gas as pulling 400 pounds is a lot of weight for a bike, as you have to include wind resistance. Probably would be fine for short trips, but would think this trailer would be great for a small car like a Versa. If the trailer costs 10k that would be more than what I paid new for my Versa in 2009.

At a steady speed on level road, weight doesn't affect fuel consumption, only drag (perhaps weight adds more tire deflection, but that's minor). Since this is only 4' wide, I'm quite curious what your trailer was to be more efficient?

So I’ve spent bit of time on motorcycles but they’ve all been on the smaller side. Nothing I would feel comfortable towing a small camper with. For those of you who are avid riders how many ccs or what specific horsepower do you think you would be comfortable with if you were to tow this? Would you say it comes down to the weight of the bike and the stopping power/distance vs towing power?

At least 1200 cc, a touring bike, but something with this profile I'd also prefer a trike. It's just too tall for comfort and safety for me. There are other folding motorcycle camper options where I'd go down to 900 cc for some of them.

I love the design, light weight of it.....windows and larger door. I have a 2015 Littleguy Mypod Max....basically same idea. Here is my biggest issue with it....those frames were known to literally crack in half. This happened to me and cost me 500.00 while on vacation to have it fixed by a specialist that could weld aluminum. They never acknowledged the problem or did anything to improve it. That frame looks to be pretty much identical....2x2 aluminum.
@MastaSquidge
@MastaSquidge 2 года назад
They definitely did address it. This was fixed in the 2018 model year. My 2018 is much more stout of a frame than the earlier models. I still wouldn't recommend anyone buy one though unless they get a 2018+ for a significant discount.

People... it's expensive because of the materials used to keep it so light - and low volume production. Seriously, some are saying "build your own" well unless you work with fiberglas and can build a 400lb trailer you cannot "mirror" what is here. The appeal is for those who need a super light trailer due to their tow vehicle. I've got a can-am spyder and can see the benefit to this - also my Mazda Miata could tow it easily. it's not cheap, but in the ballpark for what it does for the right situation.

I was thinking about the moisture thing, what if you installed something like a 1 or 2 quart bucket in a corner or inner cabinet, then ran a 3/8" tube from the bottom of the bucket through the floor. Fill with road salt and enjoy! The salt will absorb the moisture in the air and condense it in the bucket, where it then runs out the tube. I noticed this happening when a bunch of salt got stuck in my scoop in the garage, might need to be aluminum not sure.

You show it being towed by a CanAm Spyder trike, this has a towing limit of 400 pounds so even the lightest has only 11 pounds avilable for your gear, virtually all of your gear will have to be carried on the trike. The other models are much too heavy to be towed bythe Spyder. No problems with a bike or trike towing a trailer as I have been towing with a bike for over 20 years, first with a 550cc then 1200 and finally 1600 cc bike. These teardrop trailers are no use for bikes in the UK as we are restricted in trailer size. (1 meter wide max and 2 meters from rear axle to rear of trailer, loaded weight max of 80% of bike weight.)
