Please enable subtitles to see useful and random comments. In this video, I' showing you the world's longest outdoor covered escalator system, Central-Mid-Level Escalators. The system was commissioned in 1993 to facilitate the journeys residents living in the hills to the MTR. It is 800m long and about 45 floors in height, that's literally a skyscraper. It has become one of Hong Kong's tourist attractions and is home to many interesting and unique bars and cafes. Definitely a must-see when in Hong Kong.

@walkinginhongkong Год назад
oohh but if you can the tram is also a great way to go to the peak cause you get a panoramic view of the city. The escalators is more the immersive route though. Glad I helped you out😊

This 800m people outdoor covered people mover was brought to completion in 1993, at the prime time of Hongkong. It facilitates mid-level residents, alleviates traffic congestion and, is a prime sightseeing venue of the hustle and bustle city lives. Think about the blood and sweat effort, the wealth and the ingenuity of the Hongkongers, this people mover moves people up, is ubiquitous in the world transportation history apart from its astounding record in engineering.

I am a native Hong Konger who left the city 50 years ago, i.e. before the escalator was built. I visited HK two weeks ago and tried the escalator for the first time. I started from the Central Market going uphill. What I did not understand or comprehend was that people coming down the hill were riding the escalator, while people going up were climbing steps. I managed to finish the hard part. It was not until midway through I could ride the escalator up, while people coming downhill had to walk the steps. I made my trip late in the morning. Did I come at the wrong time for the traffic directions? It just did not make much sense to me. Or what did I miss?
@walkinginhongkong
@walkinginhongkong Год назад
thats great observation, Conrad. The escalators actually runs downhill to bring all the residents "down" to work (via MTR mostly) then from 10:30 a.m. until midnight it switches direction and runs uphill to bring people to residences and also bars/cafes. So you probably caught the switching period in the morning. :)

This is Don Don Donki Central (Japanese grocery store) but the Building is called 100 Queen's Road Central. Here's a google map link: www.google.com/maps/place/DON+DON+DONKI+Central/@22.2831302,114.1553841,18.33z/data=!4m6!3m5!1s0x340401cedc715e51:0x47db0df175153219!8m2!3d22.2833443!4d114.1549433!16s%2Fg%2F11mtrdq0dd. In the early colonial era, most of the scenes you captured in the mid-level or above, were only allowed for non-Chinese to enter.
