How expensive is Zurich, Switzerland?
Zurich is the most expensive city in the world in 2024 according to multiple financial reports from companies like Forbes and Architectural Digest. Switzerland is one of the most expensive countries in the world, so it makes sense that they would have some extremely expensive cities.
The biggest culture shock in Switzerland for me was the cost of food. In Zurich Old Town most restaurants cost at least $25 for a meal and many were much more expensive than that. Even at Burger King in Zurich a single Whopper cost $10 and a combo with fries and a drink is up to $18!
Zurich is definitely not a city for travelers on a tight budget. If you are a budget traveler and want to check out Switzerland my recommendation would be to grocery shop as much as possible because at least the grocery store was relatively affordable.
One other crazy thing to me was the amount of fancy watches and jewelry on display in glass windows for extremely high prices. I walked past a store selling Swiss watches in the window for well over $5,000. Switzerland is a fascinating place!

Its really funny seeing you be amazed amongst walking through those streets while my memories of many of these locations are being black out drunk and trying to find my god damn uber 😂

The Joahniter Brewery restaurant you passed at 7:29 I used to go from time to time. They used to have a nice a cheap dish: liver in red wine sauce with rösti for about 16.50. If you go to Langstrasse, you could get a generous and tasty south indian menu for CHF13. But yeah, it is super expensive in this city... And country.

I just wanted to clarify a couple of things: first of all, you took the train to the downtown area and not the tram, which would have been cheaper. Then went to the Banhoffstrasse area, which is one of the most expensive in Zurich. Everything costs more there; If you would end up in a different area you would see lower prices. Another thing is that the american chains there (BK, McDonald, Starbucks) are a novelty there and they are more expensive than in the US. Overall, I feel that NY or LA can be as expensive, if not more expensive. Keep in mind that in Switzerland the prices already include tax and there's no need to leave a tip. As for the most expensive city that I have ever been to, is without a doubt: Honk Kong. Great video!

Thank you for speaking your thoughts! For the trip to downtown I just did what google maps told me to do so I didn’t know there was a cheaper way haha. Otherwise I do clarify it in the video that I was in the heart of downtown so prices are higher. But New York and LA are definitely getting to this level with tips and tax

Ahahah…yes, the tram costs only CHF 6.80 😂 The prices in the Bahnhofstrasse-area (Migros, Coop, Bucherer, Mc Donalds and a lot of other stores) are the same like in other swiss cities… Nothing is cheaper in Switzerland. The costs in Zurich are 132.7 and in NYC 100 (Numbeo, 18.7.23).

The reason why the train ticket price went from 3.50 to 7.00 is because you paid full fare. Most people who commute have a half fare card (Halbtax). That river is the Limmat. The 'awesome looking church' is the Grossmünster, one of the four main churches in Zurich. Those food prices are not extraordinary and not due to being in a 'touristy' area. I live in the next canton down and it's the same. That price of the cheese was not for a block, but per 100g.

Thank you for sharing all of this info! Once I settled in I made sure to do more research about the river, churches, and other sites. But the half price ticket thing is interesting! Thanks :)

@@JakeBraymiller The halbtax is CHF185 per year (If I recall correctly) and provides half price on all forms of transport including boats, gondolas, car and bike rental, ski resorts etc. Well worth it if you live here or even if you plan to use public transport for a period of time.

Restaurants are expensive, but it always depends what you are comparing with. Downtown Paris, London or San Francisco it will not be that different I guess. With the crazy tips in US, it would be hard to get a Pizza for less than $20 final payment.
@JakeBraymiller
@JakeBraymiller 5 месяцев назад
That’s true a lot of this is relative to where you come from. This is absolutely crazy for someone from a cheap country but fairly normal for someone from NYC
@mydogisbailey
@mydogisbailey 22 дня назад
This is false. I’ve lived in San Francisco and Paris. Neither of those places charge nearly as high for food, period.
@holger_p
@holger_p 22 дня назад
@@mydogisbailey If you read properly, I said compare price of food to normal income. And Restaurant is more expensive, than baking the pizza yourself, starting with some flour. What's false with that ? I have no idea what you mean with "charge nearly as high ..". I named the price of Pizza, not of food. If you say "you lived in" it means, it's not data from this year, and probably outdated.
