A mammoth 568 carats “The Eternal Flame” is the largest and most significant black crystal opal ever found.
What makes it even rarer is its Tintenbar origin from the east coat of Australia which is closed to mining now so you will never see another piece come from that area.

You know how Black Opals fluoresce green under UV light? Because of this, I'm guessing what makes Opal black is traces of a mineral called Uraninite. Uraninite is a Uranium Dioxide mineral. The activator for Black Opal's green fluorescence must be the Uranium content in Uraninite.

This stone was found by the late John Shaw in the seventies in booyong, not tintenbar, altough not far from tintenbar, its worth noting that there were hundreds of opal mines working in teven, tintenbar and booyong between 1911 and 1932, John mined Booyong from 1972 on. He was a wonderfull man with a passion for life and opal, Campbell Bridges bought almost all the opal that came from him, including this piece, by all accounts of what John told me he was also an amazing man with a huge passion, this stone is of enormous value and cultural significance because of the rarity and geolocation, it belongs in a museum on the north coast of new south wales but i very much doubt anybody will ever see it again. And by the way thats ecactly how he found it, the rest of it is probably still down the hole, but dont expect the locals to allow you to ever even look around the area, its all covered in macadamia trees and expensive real estate, i can say by experience the locals there all have a screw loose and money to burn.

As soon as I saw these images I was sure that this is a knapped implement, either a small hand axe or scraper, or perhaps a spear point. It's highly unlikely that it was ever used, as it would surely be seen as having magical properties. But as another commenter has posted here, that's apparently a knapped item and it's strange that nobody has thought to investigate that aspect of its provenance. (Quite possibly it should also be the property of the Original People of that region.)

tintenbar opal is volcanic in that it was formed in lava[basalt],then eroded out to be found in red clay rich soil, some of the material can be unstable and can crack and craze, but it is sweet opal to look at ,some of the material is contra luz in nature ,full spectrum colours with rolling flashes, that are as bright as the best qld boulder opal,we also get some fire opal, found in rhyolite vugs deep in the rainforests behind byron bay that have an amber/honey/yellow colour some with a beautiful play of precious opal inside. rolling flashes
