World's Scariest Drug?

"What would it take to be considered the world's scariest drug? A documentary that has gone viral in two days has a suggestion - it's one that criminals use to erase your memory and renders you incapable of exercising your free will. The drug, called scopolamine, also known as 'The Devil's Breath,' is derived from a particular type of tree common in Colombia called the Borrachero tree...".* Ana Kasparian and Cenk Uygur discuss on The Young Turks.

Vice- pays to send a journalist to columbia, where he interviews a professor, three victims, and a dealer. Young Turks- watch two minutes of a documentary and express there opinions. Well done vice, we need someone more interested in the truth than hearing their own voice.

there's nothing to be skeptical about. I live in Colombia and know many people who have had scapolamine administered to them, including my brother, cousins and several friends. The lucky ones realised that something weird was happening to them and asked someone to help them, luckily some found real help, my brother took the people to his home and had it ransaked, a cousin emptied his ow bank account and remembers knowing he was doing something stupid but being unable to control himself

Scopolamine is used every day in a patch form to help prevent motion sickness. It's called Transderm and is only available as a prescription. People often use them while on cruises.
@itchykami

Kinda confirmed. Scopolamine is a perscription drug in the US used for seasickness, and is over the counter in Canada, it also has implication as a really good antidepressant. At higher doses, you get people turning into perfectly obedient individuals. In the end our brains are a bundle of chemicals, and adding specific chemicals can do amazing things.

I don't know about the Indians but I know it was discovered by Europeans in the late 1800s and used medically in the early to mid 1900s. It was known as nightshade and it was given to women in labor to ease the pain of childbirth much like a modern day epidural.

Actually, I'm having a hard time finding much of anything on Scopolamine. One website even seems to suggest that it is nothing more than a simple prescription medication. The only sources I can find on the drug are the Vice documentary and a 10 year old Reuters article that everybody else references when talking about it. Does anybody else have any real info on this drug?

I was given this as a follow-up to a smoking cessation program. It was in patch form. It also said it was useful against seasickness. It made me dry and thirsty, and a little "off," but that was it.

Desomorphine is a huge problem in Russia where people make it by themselves from over the counter codeine (similar to methamphetamine made from pseudoephedrine). The product created in people's homes contain a lot of toxins and impurities that can cause severe tissue damage when injected into the body. The tissue damage may be so severe that limbs require amputation. There are many extremely graphic videos about it on youtube and the internet if you want to look it up.

Scopolamine is a parasympatholytic drug used before surgeries to decrease gastric secretions and other secretions, antimotion sickness as well as a few other conditions. It does have some hallucinogenic effects. Roofies on the other hand are in the Valium class of drugs ie sedative hypnotic class. Completely separate pharmacological activities.

“don’t go to Colombia” ?? I have news for you, this happens in the US. My brother and cousin were victims and no they were not with prostitutes. But my cousin had a nice watch on, they went to a family oriented pizza restaurant to have dinner, asked for two margaritas and the last thing they remember is having a sip of the drink. They woke up the next day without watch, cards, money in one account and they don’t know what happened. We learned that this is very common in Las Vegas, Florida in several cities, New York. Basically where there are tourists

No, I was telling Skinnywhop87 the closest thing to PCP, not scopoloamine. Dextromethorphan is very similar to the feeling of PCP, as well as the shitty mind effects. The main difference is PCP is way more intense on the mind, and DXM kind of makes you speed and feel like your head is imploding.

You can get scopolamine with a prescription at any retail pharmacy.....Transderm Scop, Scopace. etc...... that doesn't mean it's not dangerous, but maybe you could have mentioned this in your story, instead of presenting it as some dangerous foreign drug.

The street name in Russia for home-made desomorphine made in this way is "krokodil" crocodile, reportedly due to the scale-like appearance of skin of its users, and it is used as a cheaper alternative to heroin, as codeine tablets are available without a prescription. Since this mix is routinely injected immediately w/ little or no further purification, "krokodil" has become notorious for producing severe tissue damage, phlebitis & gangrene, sometimes requiring limb amputation in long-term users

didn't the usa (my nation don't get me wrong) conduct an extensive study on possible brain control drugs? project ultra or something like that. regardless of the name, wouldn't they have likely been aware of something like that drug? based on the description it would be more effective than torture or any other form of interrogation at extracting information. this is why i doubt the description given for the chemical's effects.

While scopolamine WAS once available in several over the counter medications (before the 90's), restrictions on its use has led to the drug only being available through a prescription. This is true in the United States as well as in a number of countries around the world.

Psychologists and sociologists often cite concerns that living in the internet age is damaging our ability to communicate directly with other humans in the real world. Given the possibilities of this drug, I fail to see a downside with that. I'll just add Colombia to my list of "never go" places.

I'm skeptical about this drug too. The farthest I ever went was amphetamines, and it was only scary at first. I sure as hell didn't lose my senses or ability to decipher right from wrong. You just feel really good. I have heard stories about some pretty wild behavior on hallucinogens though, namely LSD. Though I can't say from experience, I just can't believe that any chemical substance could alter your state of mind to such an extent that you cooperate in suggested actions detrimental to you.

Scopolamine is just like any other deliriant. It's in quite a few plants, datura being the most famous. You'd get the same effects taking 25 benadryl or dramamine as you would eating this plant. Having had first hand experience with a variety of deliriants, I can assure you, you don't just lose free will. You're confused, EXTREMELY thirsty and seeing very realistic non-psychedelic hallucinations, but you're not a mindless zombie by any means.
