This is the world's simplest electric train which runs not only inside but also “outside” the coil.

This “Train” is made of neodymium magnets, copper wire and a dry cell battery.
Please enjoy watching this simple structure electric train (electromagnetic train).
【Structure and How to make】 ※日本語での説明は欄の下
It's possible to get such power using a dry battery, neodymium magnets (something plated with metal) and a bare copper wire.
A point is that a magnet's diameter is bigger than a dry cell battery's diameter.
And an electric current flows to a coil through a neodymium magnets, and a coil will be an electromagnet only in an area between the magnet and the magnet.
The electromagnet and a neodymium magnet poles repel each other at one side.
The other side poles pull against each other.
They work same direction, and it become a big force.
The phenomenon also continues at a movement destination.
※Another important point is magnets direction

there is a lot of energy lost to friction with this design, however as the magnets are not superconductive. The battery will probably lose charge pretty fast. Amazing stuff though. Cool how the magnets act as both the circuit connection and the magnetic pushing force. Elegant.

What I'm curious about is can you make it work with a permanent magnet only "train" and passing current throught the coils. I think it should work if you alligned the poles appropriately. (I think N-S should face toward the center )

No, as the energy moving the train is coming from the battery, and the whole thing is a simple induction motor.
@solidaudioTV

Very cool! Kudos to the author. Seems to me the key to any serious improvements on this would be to find a way to reduce the friction involved. That would in turn make it go faster and reduce heat build-up in the battery. Also, I wonder if speed control might be possible without complicating it too much?

Good question Bryce, but it needs to have a contact. Watch his other video and you will see that with an enamel wire it does not work. It is quite intuitive. The current created by the closed circuit of the battery creates a magnetic field on the cooper wire, hence the dislocation. Very clever.
@Bruno-cb5gk
@Bruno-cb5gk 7 лет назад
I have an idea, If the train was made only from magnets and there was a thin acrylic tube between the coil and the 'train', with a 9V battery hooked up to the coil. That should be a lot faster because the Train has less unnecessary weight (no battery) or have more power (more magnets), there is less friction (the acrylic tube) and more power (9V>1.5V).

I used 19 gauge wire. it must be bare copper wire. the first wire I used had an invisible coating on it and the train didn't move. I bead blasted the wire and got some movement but the bead blasting left the wire rough. I ordered 15' bare copper wire on line from ETSY ,put a sheetrock screw in the end of a 3 foot long 1/2 "diameter wooden dowel and clamped a handheld electric drill on the screw. I then taped the wire to the dowel at a point close to the drill tip and used the drill to wind the wire around the dowel.. very easy and efficient. AAA batteries work well and the magnets I used were 12mm diameter. try to find magnets with a face that transitions to the edge with a curve. Magnets with a squared off edge don't travel as well over the coils in the wire. Also, it makes a difference which way the magnets are facing on each end of the battery. If you are having trouble, try flipping the magnets on one of the ends of the battery and try to insert it. This was lots of fun making, great video!

fried412 you could have used fire, the enamel can be burnt with any flame, but i suggest using a mini torch and then wash the burnt enamel submerging the wire in water

You make a good point about the squared edges catching. You could possibly super glue a beveled ring to the leading magnet.

What if you wrap the entire "train" in thin foil and make some sort of "bullet" for less friction? It could short- circuit the battery though, it depends if the copper wire has less resistance and currents flows through there. If not, you can separate the two poles and leave a tiny strip without a foil in the middle of the batter ( maybe glue some wheels and keep only tiny portions of the thin foil in contact with the coil, could be a good experiment)What if you wrap the entire "train" in thin foil and make some sort of "bullet" for less friction, it may work. @@icu9313 "Safe" is sort of relative. It is shorting the battery intermittently so it isn't a prolonged dead short... I would think that as long as it kept moving it should take some time to overheat the cell. Long enough to clear a reasonably long "track". It isn't totally without risk from a 1.5v alkaline cell either. Lithium cells can run away thermally and catch fire while venting pressure if they get hot enough. The electrolyte is flammable. Usually this is induced for show by overcharging. I had one pop with the sound of a rifle shot and spew fire from using a defective charger. Any battery will get hot if you short it long enough. Probably best to do it outdoors...

@matejsojka6683
@matejsojka6683 5 лет назад
it is actually pretty simple. Those magnets are strong and also because of that coating electrically conductive. That tube is made of unisolated wire. Current going from one pole of the battery trough magnets via coil through other magnet to other pole of that battery. That is closed circuit and that means that there is current and where is current there is magnetic field. That magnetic field with permanent magnets causes movement. It is a very nice example and funny to watch but battery will be dead real soon.
