As an Irish person I must say I am happy to see our national sport of Dick or Jeep being represented on an international level, such a skilled and noble sport
Yeah I'm going to go to go to work for a few hours now and maybe I have a big sharp knife and I'm drunk but that doesn't make me any less of a man now does it
They really are nice people mostly. If you watch strong man you will often see one of them finish then turn around and start cheering on thr competition.
Earlier today got up earlier in the day, today, and I got up to go to go to go to go to work so I can work, because if I go to go to work then I’m going to go to work to work
Tom and Luke Stoltman are from a tiny town of only 3000 people called Invergordon where I live. They're incredibly genuine, authentic and down to earth lads and the people here are so proud of what they've achieved. My son has autism and it's so heartwarming to see the adversity Tom has overcome to get to where he is, and how Luke always speaks so highly of him to build him up (as does Tom speak in the same way about Luke). They're well-loved in the area and don't act like divas or celebrities with an attitude, just salt of the earth lads with a wonderful and positive inspiring vibe they bring everywhere they go. Great fellas.
as a single father of two young kids who goes to work during the day, takes care of the kids at night, and goes to school- to hear him say THAT is a strong man made me choke up ☹️🥹❤️ I haven’t felt that seen by anyone but my kids for a long long time
The way the dudes at 8:00 describe a strong man in very progressive terms, being sure to include men who have a job and take care of their family but don't necessarily have time to build a lot of muscle, but then go on to immediately start complaining about men who "can't swing an axe" gave me whiplash.
“Paw” was either legitimately flirting with Andrew or he’s one of the greatest trolls of all time, a perfect Channel 5 subject and I hope they offered him a job as correspondent
The boy is describing egg white and excessive whey protein farts perfectly. The smells that will come out of your body on excessive whey are straight out of biblical descriptions of hell.
I fricking love the Irish man taking the piss ( literally ) while the Scott guy is being interviewed, such a perfect moment to capture. They're not just strong, they've got that great sense of humor.
That's some serious Solid Snake s*** right there nobody had any idea that 6 foot f****** three curly haired man was standing right next to that sign they were flabbergasted I'm sure
@@saruniz If they didnt, most technological advancement just wouldnt happen. We just need to get more people in the software development industry. Theyre severely lacking in developers.
@@SRX33 I got the idea they were more talking about splitting wood to provide heat in the winter (not everyone has electricity everywhere), to cook on, etc. rather than deforestation. I don't see the ability to chop wood as "toxic" masculinity in any way. Then again, I may have misinterpreted that statement.
@@SRX33 I think the point is more that, as divorced from the real world as we seem to be, we are still animals. We are still biological creatures with a physical need for activity, to be healthy. There is nothing healthy about spending so much time sitting at a computer that your spine literally deforms, your muscular development withers from disuse, your cardiovascular fitness is untrained, etc. All of that stuff matters, A LOT. And for as much as we discuss toxic masculinity in our culture, there is also something to be said for toxic immasculinity. It’s not necessary for most of us in our modern world to chop wood, BUT should you have the physical ability?? Yeah. You should. If you’re uncoordinated and physically unfit that you can’t, you’re surely going to face detrimental physical health consequences in your future. One of the best predictors of all-cause mortality in elderly is grip strength. Think about that. I think that’s what undergirds the sentiment from these guys. It comes out as “you should be able to chop wood and protect your family from evils”, but really it’s even more practical than that, to me anyway.
Being a casual follower of the sport I was a little worried how hard Andrew would lean into the "lets make them all look like dummies, repeating the clips that make them come across as simple" angle, but fortunately that wasn't too much the case! I've travelled around the UK to see these athletes compete and it was nice to see them get treated pretty respectfully and not asked trap questions. The "genuine/touching/wholesome" vibe of the video was really appreciated.
Have you seen their video with Yes Theory? Very different style to Andrew’s but it’s still that documentary esque take. They go up to the Scottish highlands and live with Luke and Tom for a few days, it’s a phenomenal video.
@@StoltmanBrothers No wayyyy Hello Tom and Luke!! See that Andrew, get on it! You can do some strongman stuff and I would love to hear a Scotsman freestyle rap
@@gjhartist3685 definitely, small sport were really hoping to see grow, mostly because of the personalities behind it so glad Andrew got to show guys like Pa who make it fun to follow behind the scenes
Americans get on the mic for ten seconds and start talking about how modern man is emasculated, Europeans aren't like that. I lived in both the u.s and the u.k, Americans take life way too seriously
It's especially funny because you wouldn't necessarily think he was arguably the greatest strongman of all time just by looking at him in this video. If it weren't for the fact that the text on the screen mentioned he was a former champ, he woulda seemed like some random big guy who happened to wander over to the competition and watch what was going on.
@@CantTellYou I think it's mostly tradition and cultural background. The idea of a strongman is often tied to Viking culture and I guess also Celtic culture a bit. I'm certain that there would be just as many strongmen from Asia, South America and Africa if it was a bigger sport there
Colin Bryce(that guy) knows footage goes out of back stage things, they just don't want the event footage out. The WSM isn't shown on TV live or after the event, this year in the UK it will be shown December 27th despite the competition being in March.
From a european standpoint, a lot of these interviews are actually quite great, no matter the topic. The springbreak one stood out to me and I've seen it countless times. I understand it's mainly meant to be humorish, but it contains a lot of really valid points as well. And I like Andrews ability to let people just sort of answer what they want without ever interrupting.
That bit was phenomenal cos Paw had been relentlessly slagging himself the whole way along in a scenery chewing alpha move but he either didn't get or chose not to get that slagging and breezed right on past.
3:24 Andrew being filmed next to a sign that says "NO FILMING" and saying "We'll fucking see about that..." is the absolute most succinct display of the essence of the Channel 5 spirit I've ever seen. That image, black and white, high-contrast (like how Obey's Andre the Giant image was made) should be on a tee-shirt.
The sign was about not filming the events. TV contracts are how World’s Strongest Man make a majority of their money, so when people film the events it hurts their profits. Sucks for the fans because we have to wait months after the fact until it airs on TV to watch it, but that’s how the athletes and the organization earn their money from the event.
Fucking delighted you met the Stoltman Brothers. Two of the greatest men that have graced this planet, from round the corner from me. Proudest Highlander out there 😍
Personally, I don't like how some of the more thoughtful interviews were cut for the sake of comedy, and this video felt a lot more shallow and ham-fisted than previous content. I definitely liked the people that were being interviewed, but as far as Andrew and the production side of things went I think this is one of their worse videos myself.
This was surprisingly wholesome. I mean sportsmen are usually down to earth and positive people, but we know how Americana can influence some people. Very nice episode!
he doesn't really say anything that creates a conversation, he asks a very open ended and vague question, that can give lots of different types of people a lot of different responses he just does what a journalist is supposed to do, be unbiased, and not give his opinion, he doesn't want to argue with these people, or talk to them necessarily (at least not on video) he just wants their raw take on a subject.
@@htm5814 I like that he apparently idolizes Teddy Rosevelt Like yeah Teddy was a badass. But he wasn't looking to prove his manliness. He was interested in doing the things he thought were the right things not in doing the things society told him a man is required to do.
Man y'all tell me why my manager keeps getting on to me about taking a break. I work at Wal-Mart after being retired for 10 years. I don't know what y'all kids be talking about these days and the CSM keeps telling me to take break but Idk what that means. One day they take me back to HR and say I need to be shown how to take break so they start clapping tf outta my checks. The CSM then said my turn I'm finna break one off in you. And my guts been spilling out ever since. I can't even play pickup at the Y because when I jump my booty hole catches the wind like a umbrella and it takes me forever to get back on the ground. Anyways, is this normal. We did some SUS things back in the day but idk about this. I'm a black man in my 50s btw.
They were the chillest ones, no pun intended. You could see the straight dudes radiating insecurity and a need to see themselves as "real men", whereas the tub guys were just happy to be among the big, hard, strong guys they want to be and be with.
@@toxihex876 how do you know who's straight? Are you talking about the shorter guys in orange? They do seem like the generic American toxic masculinity crew. 😆
As a fan of strongman this was unexpected but great...pretty mindblowing seeing seeing Andrew interacting with guys like Luke stoltman and big Z...most of those dudes are chill af
I've noticed it's actually a lot more common in extreme sports where the athletes know they're in a specific niche and massively respect the strength, agility, or other skills required to do certain things. Like, my ear's not glued to the ground or anything, but I don't remember the last time I heard about beef between skateboarders, BMXers, or motocross riders.
@@cheshirecynic3061 instantly though of skateboarding. homies will sometimes help you and give you tips, so that you can win.. making themselves lose in the process. it's beautiful i love sk8
@@cheshirecynic3061 This is true. I’ve noticed that most “individual” sports are always the most humble. As an ex cross country/track athlete and boxer I can attest that everyone around me was so respectful of opponents, and made those around them feel special even if they were struggling. It’s the team based sports that show poor sportsmanship, which I think speaks numbers about how people are
@@pyxidus_ I think a lot of it has to do with clan mentality, like, many people that play in team sports tend to develop a universal "us vs them" attitude, whereas most people in individual sports and hobbies just have respect for anybody as crazy as they are, anybody who's willing to put in the same level of effort and dedication to their craft.
@@cheshirecynic3061 I think there’s still an us vs them mentality in individual sports it’s just the us is the entire sport not just singular teams. I’ve noticed skiers and snowboarders don’t really get along but will both be super cool to the people within those respective sports (mostly snowboarders) same kind of deal with skateboarding and bmx
It's really encouraging seeing how the scene has developed in the past few years, was shocked when I saw this collab on Instagram. It's probably not the best advertisement, but it's still nice that an extreme sport like this is getting to a wider audience
Fuckkkk yes Mr Olympia coverage from Channel 5... that'd be a dream come true. The journalism around it is so fake. The one coverage I always loved was luimarco. But he doens't do much anymore. Thatd be amazing
Love the uncommentated, sober interviews as always - although not all people interviewed were sober... Yes Theory also made a video that features the current strongest man. They are super chill and friendly dudes, go watch their video, it's amazing!
I like how the news clip didn't tell me much. I learned more and was inspired more by this 10 minute video rather than a years worth of regular news. Keep it up. 💯
Congrats on the HBO collab man!! That’s big time. Considering you left your OG baby at VICE to stay true to your vision is even a bigger feat. Your muscles may not be strongest man potential but your will and heart certainly are!
I'm so mad i can't see you tmr in my home mf town!!! i really love you though bro, your journalism and style of business has forever inspired me, shout out to one of the few great minds from the 206.
Why did that man get in the bath and then put his erect penis onto another means lap and then start urinating and then say "wow that feels good" while continuing the interview like the weirdest thing that's ever been recorded didn't just happen?
@@thestormtrooperwhocanaim496 he has 1 less WSM than Pudz but far more Arnolds wins, a better head to head record, and won IFSA titles during the split. I'd say it's Z, Shaw, then Pudz
@@finestjellybeansrawlol9486 Funnily enough, it's actually Big Z, Mariusz, and THOR.
