World Steam Today is a lively survey of today's preservation of yesterday's steam train heritage.
This volume covers Eastern Europe and Africa with a wonderful selection of main line, industrial and working steam.
Poland provides us with glimpses of rare main line steam featuring a 'Tkt' 2-8-2, a 'Kriegslok', a Prussian Railway 'P8' 4-6-0 and a mighty 'PT4T' 2-8-2.
From Turkey we recall a steam special from Kars to Adana, on the Mediterranean coast, headed at various times by 2-10-0 No 56140, Krupp-built 2-10-0 No 56052 and Henschel 2-8-2 No 46052.
In Romania we see first a main line mixed traffic 4-6-0 before moving on to classic 0-8-0's on the 760mm narrow gauge line out of Covasna.
Views of the world's most numerous class of steam locomotive, the 0-10-0 'E' class', and the massive 'P36' 4-8-4 illustrate steam in Russia.
Moving to Africa, we head first to South Africa where the picturesque 'Garden Route' from George to Knysna is portrayed where the line crosses the Kaimans river bridge. Zimbabwe was famous for its Garratts and examples of four classes - '14A', '15A', '16A' and '20A' - are seen on routes out of Bulawayo to Victoria Falls, on the West Nicholson line and on a return trip to Plumtree.
In Botswana South African locomotives are pictured working on the Nickel line at Setebi Phikwe.
Finally, to Zambia, where we record a challenging trip from Livingstone to Mulobezi when a ZR 4-8-2 literally runs out of steam 100km from the nearest civilisation.
