During World War II, the United States Government took over many of Atlantic City’s hotels, including the Traymore, The Brighton, and The Dennis. After German U-boats began sinking merchant ships off the Jersey coast, it became apparent that ships silhouetted against the backdrop of beachfront
lights became easy targets. Black Out Curtains were distributed, and automobiles were restricted from using headlights.
In an effort to halt U-Boat attacks, blimps took off from Lakehurst on bombing missions. If patches of oil were sighted on the ocean’s surface, it indicated a hit.
