World War II on the Western Front 1940 hour by hour. Enjoy the video.
Total time spent on information retrieval: 6 months.
Time to create a video: 2 months
Not every day (of course :-D)
Details:
The first phase of the German invasion (May 10 - June 4) is relatively high quality and credible. There is only a small number of interpolations. Until the conquest of Paris on June 14, hourly gains can still be considered good. After that, there was a lack of resources and since June 15, interpolations have been around 50%. After June 19, more than 80%. The last days of the invasion must therefore be taken with some reserve. The days should be right.
Due to a lack of good information, I ended hourly gains when the French government signed an armistice. The Germans continued to advance until June 27, when they reached the Spanish border. The last fortified sectors and forts surrendered on July 3.
The Italian invasion is then from very high quality sources and can be considered credible.

@jpc7118
@jpc7118 3 года назад
@@henryworks9089 France and her allies (Dutch, BEF, Belgians and Luxemburgers) ... France was representing "only" 65 to 70% of the ground forces... BEF which was the alone professiuonal army has been beaten as easily of the so called "cowards" French... BTW the CESM as some of the anglo-saxons (mostly the ignorants) like to refer to us, managed in Lille and in Dunkirk perimeter to resist enough time at a high cost at 10 and somewhere 20 to 1 to permit BEF to reimbark. That IS the most IMPORTANT point there. BEF is the ALONE argument that permits Churchill to impose his only will to continue the fight, it's easy after war to rewrite History, but if France and her allies have been Thrashed (which I don't deny), they fought bravely AND most UK leaders wanted to sue for peace : Churchill was in minority as Chamberlain and Lord Halifax were pressuring him to release the power and give up. it has been proven that british officials (without Churchill consentment) have secretly asked to Germans what would be the term of peace of their own... Without BEF, it 90% sure that Churchill gov would have fallen and that Halifax (or Chamberlain, but highly unprobable), named new prime ministre, he would have negociated a neutral peace. For a comparison, the despised french cowards (despised by some of the anglo-saxons) lost in six weeks of the campaign of Low countries and France more soldiers than in Verdun 1916 (at his harsher time) the same amount of time... Not so coward finally... French were ill prepared, bad leaded, but they did fight and locally, a bunch of french soldiers gave a fierce fight despite a total superiority of the enemy in term of tactics, number, materials, weapons etc... Many german Generals recognised that the French and the Belgians soldiers at their place gave it all but it was simply not enough. most of prisoners about 90ù of them have been done after the call of petain to stop the fight on radio the 17th of June. French soldiers stopped the fight that day when the armistice was effective the 22nd, BTW the germans, against the terms of the armistice continued to take many prisoners after the 22nd... French army didn't loose 2 millions of prisoners in fight, but far less than 200k, Germans took 2 millions to have some hostages and put pressure on France and avoid her to take the arms again. Armistice is end of armed hostilities not end of war... For another comparison, french air force has been destroyed at about 65% of its capacities, on the ground the 10 and 11th may. The last fighters on totally outclassed MS 406 gave many fights against 6 to 8 BF 109 (far more modern), they inflicted in six weeks about the same amounts of destruction to luftwaffe that the RAF did in three months during the Blitz in summer 1940. Luftwaffe lost to france and her allies about 40% of her strength, 3/4 of this losses were due to french air force. Luftwaffe missed alot these losses when they began their attack on Britain. Also, half of the german tanks were destroyed or out of order. Numbers easily findable on the net, whatever the nationality of the Historians, they told germans did a ruch, a costly one, a costly win, a terrific win. Another element can explain the german efficiency, they did take drugs to fight harsh and not sleep (another fact proven), it wasn't the case for the allies... To finish, if the WWI was mainly a french victory with the help (not negligeable) of her allies (I count even Russia despite the defeat, the german soldiers lost there count), WWII was mainly the victory of the Red Army with the help (neither negligeable) of their allies. Also, France had 2 equipped armies on the field in end of 1944, fighting alongside the allies, more than 1 million of fighters which is not nothing. 1 army had the missions to take the french ports stubbornly kept by Wehrmacht and french armoured first army which was fighting on the rhine border. If fighting free french were not numerous, France would have never been "invited" at the victory table as a winner... French expeditionary corp then French 1st army and 2nd armoured div took participated greatly in the breakthrough in italy (Mount Belvedere victroy permitting the fall of both the Monte cassion and the Gustav line), then Paris liberation, Operation Dragoon (liberation of Marseille, Toulon and south and east of France), then the offensin the Ruhr (partly) and the black forest (entirely) till Berchtesgaden (eagle nest). And in Bir hakeim 1942, the french stubborn defense saved the 8th army of Montgomery and Egyp, Suez canal etc... (dixit General Alexander, Churchill, Montgomery, Rommel and numerous other chiefs or leaders). We French have to be ashamed that french leaders did give up at the first difficulties, and I reassure you, we are ashamed of that, but we have to keep in mind that once the schock passed and the French was just about to think alittle of "recovering", they did fight their best after the terrific defeat of 1940. You can't imagine what occupation means in french collective thought. whatever if you had any idea of it, you would surely understand why the French were sos tubborn to build their own nuke deterrence. Better mutual destruction than another occupation.

Little note, on June 17th Marshall Petain callled on the radio for the French forces to stop fighting, though the armistice was only signed on the 22nd, and only took effect on the 25th. That mean for eight days the French had no idea what they were supposed to do anymore, most surrendered then because they thought the war was over, some still tried to keep fighting but couldn't really do much (with, in some case, French mayors forbidding them to go through their cities to retreat or fight). So that's why after the 17th the front just collapses (even though they were losing anyway after having lost their best gear during Case Yellow).

Italy talking to Germany Italy: Dad, can I join you? Germany: Sure. Italy: Yay! What do you want me to do? Germany: Just watch.
@OriginalChaosLord
@OriginalChaosLord 3 года назад
Interestingly, Italy had a fascist dictatorship before Germany. It created the concept of fascism which the Nazis were then inspired by. en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Nazi_Party#Origins_and_early_years:_1918%E2%80%931923 > Hitler was inspired by Mussolini and the Fascists, borrowing their use of the straight-armed salute as a Nazi salute. When the Fascists came to power in 1922 in Italy through their coup attempt called the "March on Rome", Hitler began planning his own coup. The world "Fascism" comes from "Fasces", which was the symbol used on the flag of the Italian party named after it, the "National Fascist Party". So Italy invented the concept of fascism, the word "fascism" itself, and inspired the Nazi party's ideologies (Nazis weren't always fascists, that wasn't until a group overthrew some prominent members and made it fascist). So in a way, Italy would be more like a "dad" and Germany was the hyperactive son that convinced his dad to join in with his games.

Nope. Germany had the best army, and our generals probably weren't so bad. Some of the french equipment was more advanced, but not in enough numbers to make a difference... and it lacked some essential technology, like freaking radios ! Overall, Germany army was superior. That superiority alone wouldn't have been enough for them to win though. It didn't during WW1. The war was mostly lost by politicians, terrible geostrategic decisions, and the internal conflicts between UK and France.

Thank you for a very instructive video presentation of the German invasion! For your information I have added a link to this video in the article about the Battle of France, in the Norwegian Bokmål language version of Wikipedia: World War II, Western Front 1940, Every Hour -see link, bottom of page. As a contributor to Wikipedia for many years I understand and appreciate the many hours you must have put into this project. Regarding the books that you have used as a source, I would recommend you also look at The Blitzkrieg Legend: The 1940 Campaign in the West, by colonel and historian Karl-Heinz Frieser, formerly at the Bundeswehr's Militärgeschichtlichen Forschungsamt (MGFA). I hope the link may give your excellent animation even more viewers! Kind regards, Ulf Larsen, Oslo, Norway

People don't pay attention on how much France had awful allie during WW2 The UK just sended 100 000 soldiers for the 2nd WW and they were chilling at the belgian border. Belgium didn't allowed France to build the Maginot line over the franco-belgium border and they didnt let the french soldier occupy their land to stop the germans. But yeah France clearly lost because of themself during this WW.
