Speaking on the skill challenges section, there is a podcast with people playing DnD called Critical Hit that runs 4th edition DnD (usually) in which the (usual) DM frequently uses skill challenges and does a great job with them. It might be a good place to look for seeing why skill challenges are cool if you're still unsure from the streams so far.

I use it regularly and sometimes modify them in some way. I have also stolen names from vehicles I see on the road and from public restrooms. They are just familiar enough to make them comfortable, but obscure enough that no one thinks to try to place them.

In the world I wrote up, the king had an order of assassins who’s only job is to keep the economy stable. Anyone who has enough money to affect the economy negatively is quietly bumped off and the money is redistributed back into the economy to keep the value of gold, copper, and silver roughly the same.

You describing class systems is the first time I've distinctly thought "oh, Matt doesn't fully understand this aspect of society/history". Yes, culturally ingrained class systems like the one in the UK certainly have aspects which have nothing to do with how much money you have (you can be a Lord and have less money than someone who identifies as culturally working class). In a way, the UK classes almost behave more like castes in this way. However, the US does also have a class system, although it's not as core to people's cultural identities as the UK one. People in the US don't necessarily define themselves as "working class" or talk about class dynamics very much, but there are working class people in the US, and a lot of the country's political problems come from the fact that identity politics have supplanted class politics in the cultural imagination.

yeah... I think maybe just the people Matt hangs around are good people who dont care about class so he thinks the whole country is the same way.

Matt I love your stuff but as someone who has grinded my way up the the economic ladder from below the poverty line, I am a little bothered by your "it's just about money and performance" stance. I moved from a dying rural community where nobody had anything and made myself a fairly comfortable life out here in Cali. There is a definite aura that exists with my coworkers here in which my background is only forgiven if I'm up to join in on mocking the shit out of the rural communities I came from. It's pretty grating to be honest. It just disappoints me to see people pretending this isn't something common in the US, especially so in California.

He presents being traditional, conservative, non-progressive, illiberal, as "clearly the bad guys" and evil etc... so yeah, a bubble
@laithtabet970
@laithtabet970 2 года назад
@@armada854 no, he doesn't. and he has actually explained this previously on a different worldbuilding stream. yes the traditional nobility is to initially be seen as backwards and maybe even evil, but he said that even they had redeemable qualities. the guilds also have things which make them not perfect. also, if you think not being sexist or racist is "progressive", and not simply human rights, consider rethinking your stances.

Hate to break it to u Matt but wealth or the lack thereof creates classes.
@dannygustofson880
@dannygustofson880 2 года назад
Not always. I know I am a year late but wealth does not always create class and classes can exist without wealthy and poor.
@Facebooker413
@Facebooker413 2 года назад
Yeah you can create classes along other lines than wealth. While wealth is the most notable, any hierarchy with power difference where two groups have opposing interests will create class. In a technocratic society there would be the Expert Class who defines what skill and talent are and a lower class's whose interests are to make the best of their talents which may deviate from what the experts define as skilled and talented
@bruggeman672
@bruggeman672 2 года назад
@@Facebooker413 and those different classes would also be differentiated by income level. The Experts in your technocratic example would be far better compensated than the "lower" class, as you choose to call them. Even in your example you admit those in the lower class are at a disadvantage when competing with those on higher tiers. Economic status follows those other distinctions even when it isn't the premier distinction, as it is under capitalism.
@Facebooker413
@Facebooker413 2 года назад
The same process can happen without money. In this case the classes are motivated by their relationship to information and established doctrine. You have to actively take apart class divides as they appear no matter what hierarchy and the systems within that society. Also if you really wanna get techincal, the modern day classes are defined by their relation to the means of production rather than their actual wealth, and classes are muddled when you have Petit-Bougois and Labor Aristocracy to considered
@bruggeman672
@bruggeman672 2 года назад
@@Facebooker413 it can yes but almost never does. And relation to the means of production also is dictated by wealth; after all one cannot purchase the factory if one is broke. My point is wealth is always directly tied into other means of denoting class, whether it's the initial and only distinguishing factor or just the most obvious, and attempting to claim otherwise is either disingenuous or outright dishonest.
