I was just brainstorming ideas but couldn't come up with a design and your video helped so much. Like srsly you upload video right when I have a question and deliver the most precise and definite answer :')
"Since they do share a predecessor with the zerg" ... HUH I never thought I would spoilered on starcraft lore from an art video yet here we are xD. Also loving the point of the way they look and the logos can be layered as far as symbolism. Really good reminder and I immediately thought of the Klingons from Star Trek. Sharp pointy logos and sharp pointy uniforms showing off their aggression and warrior ways.
I like listening to your videos while I draw, it's relaxing and I've been struggling with this topic a little, so this video will come in handy. Thank you for making these.
Thank you for coming in the right time! I've been brainstorming for days on how to design costumes or armor on my characters from different Kingdoms. My main inspiration now is Fire Emblem designs. I'm so amazed how did they get those inspiration from and I'm studying how did they do it from my reference library.
I love the exercise idea, tho I hate getting homework unexpectedly, lol. Using logos and color schemes as the basis for race/faction design would create a very unique world that would have a strange familiarity to it, even if it weren't immediately obvious. (Honestly, more creators should give their viewers an exercise to try. It's a great engagement tactic *and* good for the imagination.)
You save me everytime For every problem I had, you had a good video to help me I don't know what I would do without your advice THANK YOU FOR EXISTING MAN !!!
This video is fantastic! I've been in an artistic funk lately, but that assignment sounds too fun to skip. I also really love the logo+silhouette exercise. Could you maybe make that lineup available as a worksheet?
I think I have done race/faction design before, but I think I need to overcome "drawing aimlessly" before I can move forward with showing stuff off. Also, would a group only known by their massive spaceships designed like microorganisms be considered a race/faction?
This is both helpful and intimidating 😂 I've got a MAJOR worldbuilding thing going on but I am struggling a bit 😅 It doesn't help that I am an artist ugh lol
“A lil race car or a lil mech suit, or a really big boy mech suit.” Yep pretty much the summery of Terrans. I hope that you won’t mind if i “borrow” the mood board.
You know what I’m sick of, but have realized is a truth? Fantasy racism. There’s always a race that’s below or seen as inferior but I think that’s just nature. Not even human nature but just how things are 😢
Hey, I was thinking, how do you decide on a theme or like a color palette? Like for example Hilda has a more round, calm, brown-y look while Brawl Stars has a bright (without hurting your eyes), active look
I've created a fictional species within a story I'm going to submit to some fantasy magazines, but the trouble I'm having with the most is the name of the species. Just nothing sounds right.
I'm having a slight trouble with ine of my worlds because there's a species of winged humanoids with one group who are culturally slightly less social (confine themselves to family units but occasionally meet with others to exchange goods) and one group who are more social (live in larger flocks that have more than one family unit, usually their goods are made by members of the flock) but they are of the same species and live relatively near each other, so I'm not sure how different I should make them, visually. I'm also just struggling with how adavanced their clothing would be because they do build things/have tools but aren't quite at like... technology or machines. I'll probably do the thing I always do which is "take a very long and overly detailed deep dive into the subject of how clothing making methods developed in early human societies" until I realize it was 100% unnecessary.
Not a pro, but it sounds like they are separated between nomadic and civilization societies, maybe make the "city" bird people more uniform with their clothes and the "secluded" ones more mismatched due to their society leaning towards trade?
Your videos just keep getting better and better!! :O This was sooo helpful tysm ^^ I especially love the prompt at the end, really motivational! A special interest of mine is pirates so I'm super hyped to draw up some fast-food-flavored pirates lol
Man, that exercise in the last 3rd looks so fun. Gotta try it soon. Great video. Should have pulled Tay on board for this one, as it falls in with writing, too.
@@CharacterDesignForge THAT WAS ABOUT SHIP DESIGN AND HOW IT TIES INTO THE CHARACTERS AND SIDES, WHAT I WANT TO KNOW ABOUT IS HOW THE DESIGNS OF THE CHARACTERS REFLECT THEIR PERSONALITIES AND BACKGROUND AND THE UNIFYING ELEMENTS BETWEEN MEMBERS OF VARIOUS RACES/GROUPS
oh geez i was just thinking about that lol youre a great help!! theres a race i made for a show and theyre called crittercreatures and theyre small cryptid-like animals (max. height is 30cm) and 3 of them (rom, isiyu and daela) are friends with the main character and i made other 3 (cala, blobfish and another one i cant remember) are just side ones but they live in a special berry tree which has a hole and that hole is a portal to their underground world which has thousands of crittercreatures
Starbucks is enlightened alien tribe Chipotle is like semi advanced ruthless tribe Arby’s is low tech high numbered humans McDonald’s is advanced yet cheap robots
Hi 😊 I watch your videos they are so good I am so sorry if i bothering you but... have you got a youtube list about begginer things or maybe a good way to exercise and learn from reference for later to create something close to reality but from imagination? I don't really unerstand how to learn what to see from a reference :( I think i can use references to build something from them but the learning part from reference ... i don't get it :( pls can you give me an advice?
I have a group of characters that already went through a major redesign because of too much sameness so I'm watching this with interest, but trepidation redesigning is hard
So while i know that this advice is more aimed towards artists this is also useful advice to prospective authors. That same kind of theming can be used to really tie together a culture in the way it does in the visual medium but is often neglected until its being adapted to a visual medium.
@@CharacterDesignForge good question, the First One that comes to Mind Is: "Racial biological evolution", as usually the Darwinian evolutionism route Is taken, but what if we consider something else instead? Next would be: "Magic and Race", which would theorize how certain magical aspects in fantasy would influence a race's growth/evolution, which can be Linked to the First point Another theme that interests me Is: "Cultural Race foundation and change" As in how said Race developed culture for the First time, and if/how their growth and/or Evolution played a part in it These are the basic tgemes i can think of right off the bat.
Mine is “how do decide on a color pallet and how do I translate gem designs to rukon designs?” Solution: simplify a combo of feather patterns from real birds. Conclusions; the equivalent to the French may trim their wing feathers to look like the common swift or their wings are swift like on their own but the former implies some cultural implication. Those who are the equivalent to Muslims cut their ears in a similar manner to circumcision. Races have a bird that is common throughout the general continent they live in, the second bird is more a kin to ethnicity or to be specific to the geographical location like for example, a thrush for south Europe and maybe snowy owls or some snow bird for the Norwegian region? A different swallow would be for the Netherlands.
if you like starcraft you would definetly love warhammer 40k. its a space tabletop game that inspired starcraft. and is definetly a really good example of culture and religion
As for designing a small faction or subfaction, somewhat unified design is perfectly fine but overly homogenising is also a massive issue. Consistency is important, but making things too consistent also creates a problem. Look at human cultures. Unless they follow a rigid religious or ideological structure, you will see a lot of variety in design, often having nothing in common other than fleeting fashion. With this in mind, when designing a faction, considering the background and what makes sense for said faction is key. Sometimes, you may have two (or more) completely opposing effects stemming from the same base idea. Let's assume, you have a species or faction who believes that their bodies are basically like a temple of their deity and are thus sacred. From this - one group may understand it in such a way that a body should be always exposed and never altered, preferably naked, because what can be more perfect than a divine image? The other may go with something different - it should be revered and adorned as much as possible. Same basic idea, different outcomes. Or a group that is mercantile and all about trading, industry and profit - you can expect both pragmatic, stingy and insanely practical and calculated and on the other hand - overly luxurious, bathing in their wealth. But the point is - these don't have to be different factions - they may be part of the same group, because groups are rarely completely homogenous, unless we are talking about military, when streamlining is important in logistics. And even in military faction, there is a possibility for customisation and style, depending on how they work - say, an order of chivalry would be less streamlined than modern army, for example.
I got ideas for the Starbucks and Arby's factions at least. Starbucks would be a faction of merfolk that incorporate lots of organic elements in their design, like plants or animal skin, and I feel like they'd operate as some sort of pseudo-anarchist commune. Arby's, on the other hand, would be a sort of Firefly-style group of space outlaws wearing grungy cowboy gear.
@@CharacterDesignForge I sadly have the artistic talent of a toddler, so the most I could do is maybe a stick figure with a fish tail or cowboy hat. I would if I could though!
