@Amy_the_Lizard
@Amy_the_Lizard 3 года назад
See, the vast majority of people and creatures in my settings are strictly the product of evolution, but some (like the flying humanoid races) are the result of people magically modifying their bodies to adapt or gain a certain ability that they wanted, with weird but not TOO weird species sitting in an awkward 'did this happen naturally, or was this on purpose?' territory where no one actually remembers what happened there. (A lot of my aquatic humanoids are in that category.)

I've heard of people using the skin of Alligator Gar for leather, and I could imagine sharks serving that role. @Amy_the_Lizard
@Amy_the_Lizard 3 года назад
On the shark thing, please keep in mind that they're basically covered in one-way sandpaper. Shark leather does exist in real life, but it would require a considerable amount of work to get it to the point where there wouldn't be a risk of people accidentally injuring themselves with it, so it probably wouldn't be the most practical option. That said, might be a good way for rich people to show off - especially if it came from a larger shark species that'd be pretty hard to take down

Loving the new colour palette, I’m so glad you decided to change it. It was still good beforehand, but it just seems so much more realistic and believable that the less bright more earth tone colours would be cheaper than the bright colours. Loving the idea of octopus ink! As it is so difficult to come by I’d imagine that black fabric would be seen as quite special!
@Amy_the_Lizard
@Amy_the_Lizard 3 года назад
Well, if they had some sort of semi-domestic, or possibly companion animal octopus that could be trained to produce ink on command instead of as a defense mechanism, and were selectively bred to produce more of it (kinda like dairy cows) it could become more readily available. As RL octopus/squid ink is usually collected from dead cephalopods - which are pretty good at getting out of thing like traps, collecting it the normal way would make it on the pricier side. And if they had some sort of religious association with cephalopods like she mentioned, that might make killing them taboo, which leads back to the domestication alternative as a possibility

Lotus silk is also a real thing, it is one of the rarest and expensive kinds of fabrics. Only a few people know how to produce it and teaching others is a long process. It can take months of work to produce a single scarf and the lotus can only be harvested by hand and extracted with skill. In terms of antiques, would you say the super rich would still have scarves dyed in colours you could only get from mainland as heirlooms? This could perhaps be a huge status symbol, as it would need to be very carefully cared for to remain intact, something only achievable for the super wealthy. With the new colour pallet someone in something like a bright red scarf would certainly be an attention grabber. Maybe only royalty have been able to keep their fine scarves in airtight boxes? Could be used only in certain festivals.
@mariahpattieworldbuilding4062
@mariahpattieworldbuilding4062 3 года назад
true, though there would definitely be political symbolism. Wearing traded goods and mainland dyes would represent cooperation, and maybe a desire to return to the surface, but wearing only aquatic colors would represent independence and self-sufficiency, and also a sense of nationalism.

I know that in Worldbuilding that furniture isn't talked about much. But, I have a couple of ideas on it: 1: The rich Nautikans import their Dark Red or Black lacquer furniture from the mainland. This coloration is from the concentration of tree resin or from the shells of types of insects. The richer the color, the more it costs. The carvings, inlaying of gold and mother of pearl, and the overall function of the furniture tell a story. For example: A Dark Red, oval Wardrobe with an inlaid golden school of fish swimming under the shade of a tree. 2: Simpler furniture is designed for the function of the object. For example: A simple chest nailed with large bolts of treated wood or iron.

A lot of medicinal herbs grow on their territory, so they have learned to use them in many of their remedies and have many skilled herbalists. Huh. I also happen to have a medically gifted mountain dwelling race in my setting. They're mammals though, not dragons, so not much overlap. For what it's worth, mine are seen as 'old fashioned' or even 'primitive' by their neighbors because any new invention or way of doing something takes a lot longer to reach them since the mountains aren't exactly a high traffic area. They're also medically inclined because they get sick more easily than a lot of the other peoples of their continent, so they had a lot more pressure to find ways to treat diseases

This is less of a question, more of a prompt. I am a trans man, and so the lives and societal position of lgbt individuals is something I like to worldbuild about. You yourself divided clothing along the masc | femme line, and I was wondering if, for example, non-binary nautikans would tend moreso toward a blend of the two, or towards a 3rd non-traditional style that moreso invents elements rather than mix those existing.
@n3r3sh77
@n3r3sh77 3 года назад
My worldbuilding project actually does focus on that. I have one culture that is very much heteronormative and patriarchal. Then I have one that is kind of the opposite. Gender is taken as a very personal thing and referring to someone by their gender is considered very rude. Grammatical gender is non-existent and a majority of the population is pansexual. Also, thanks to their magic being focused on the alteration of life (and thanks to reasonably advanced surgery) they are not only able to grow replacement organs for people from their DNA samples, they can even grow functioning genitalia of the opposite sex. So as a trans man, you could keep your fertility after transition. Plus, given their dislike of displaying gender, it would be hard for most people to even know that you are trans.

Another thing about the upper classes wearing more fabric is that, being underwater, it would make strenuous movement much more difficult. I couldn't tell from the video if your underwater cities were airtight or not, but if they were, it would imply that you don't have to go out and do a lot of work in the ocean, and if they're not, that might even make the point stronger that the severe inconvenience does not affect your lack of manual labor.

I am a storyteller and all the worldbuilding I do is for the sake of story telling. Sometimes I am speculative and sometimes wishful. Magic is always present in my storytelling, but often I am right in between magic and science as they are equally important to me and sometimes overlap. And I am a big fantasy nerd. Everything is fantasy and I can come up with whatever I want in my own worlds, as long as it makes sense to me. It was really interesting to hear your thoughts about different world builders (and the fabric dye palette was especially fascinating too). Now I am going trough my storys and worlds in my mind and try to categorize them and find a pattern in the way I make up things. It seems like I most of the time start with a wishful thought. But not every time. And at some point it comes in some speculative elements, because I can't only do wishful things, if I want to tell a story. There has to be some sort of problem or contradiction.

I've never really thought about the origins and evolution of species in fantasy before, but I think you could do it in 1 of 3 ways: Scientifically, Religiously, and Magically. If it is science based, you have to make the biology make sense, which is great fun for someone who likes science but a nightmare for people who just want thinks to look cool. If you take a religious approach, you can make up myths for all of your different races and their own views on other people's mythology, which is what i would probably opt for because I love a good story. Though be careful to keep track of your gods! And finally, magic. This is a broad category which can lean towards the other two, magic can be as simple as "woman wished in magic pool for a child and got a fairy instead" to "these people experimented with the arcane and grew wings as a result". Of course, to make it way more complicated, you could have the actual way the world works but the races themselves have their own ideas on how the world works, e.g. the world was made by fallen stars but a group of fairies believe that they actually came from butterflies idk. Sorry for the long comment and thank you if you managed to read the whole thing xx

Oooh I love the bit where you theorize and talk about Worldbuilding in general! The short version: I lean heavily towards _Magic_ over actual evolution, though I do often think about why some of these changes happened, even if the reason is just ''x type of magic did it" _Fantasy_ all the way I lean further towards _Speculative_ than wish-fulfillment, I think. Flawed worlds are what makes worldbuilding fun for me, and for the backstories of my OCs. I Worldbuild for the sake of it, rather than for a comic or book or DnD campaign or anything like that. The long version: *For a little backstory on my world* before I start getting into how I worldbuild I've had my "Stickverse" OCs for like six or seven years, and as the name may suggest, they originated back when I still attempted to make stickfigure animations. Not being very good at anything worldbuilding or story related at the time, and having made these characters in a community where it's commonplace to challenge each others characters to an RHG animation fight no matter how little that character fits into your established world, I wanted my world to be able to have literally _anything_ in it. Anything. So that I could reasonably fight with any RHG character. Thus, still being sort of a kid at the time, I of course went ''ok well my world is just almost infinitely large, then! The world's Magic can make anything happen!'' and didn't do any proper worldbuilding. Most of my characters were demons or in some way demon-related, so I had some very very loose worldbuilding around Demonkind, but that was pretty much the only place that got any kind of lore beyond individual characters, and also a hot mess. Then I started roleplaying in a few fandoms with a friend of mine. The fandoms were all set in our world, and the one we used the most was a fandom where there was barely any clear canon lore _(it was the Jacksepticeye fandom, for anyone wondering),_ so everyone just sort of made 90% of the story and character lore up. Over time some worldbuilding naturally ended up being created through our stories, characters, and me working on the fantasy part of the setting behind the scenes. I imported a tweaked version of my stickverse demon lore into this world, and did a lot of other fun worldbuilding stuff - conlanging, creation myths, fleshing out the demon realm more, funky ghost/cryptid/spirit lore.. However, while this world was good practice and fun, a lot of my old, main OCs that I loved and drew weren't compatible for this universe. Their stories were also fairly outdated when it came to my skill in coming up with good characters and backstories, being half a decade old or longer. So about a year ago, I finally started working on rewriting _all_ of it. Giving the world proper worldbuilding and lore, giving the characters backstory overhauls, or backstories for the ones who had none at all, redesigning a lot of them... I haven't made too much progress since then when you consider how much time I've had, but that's just because I suck at actually getting things done ever akhkafhka- Still, the difference between the old and current Stickverse is already staggering. *Anyway, finally to the things you mentioned in the video!!* I'm definitely much, _much_ further on the magic side of things than I am on the evolution side of things. Why did the initial races appear? Because Creator mans created statues as part of his art project (the world and its realms) and the gods he created to make sure nothing happened to his project while he moved on to other ideas ended up messing with it and giving the statues life. How did the demons that were banished into the north-west of the underrealm end up changing so much they became an entirely different species (Dracons)? Lack of regular magic resulting in them turning to dragons for a magic source resulting in funky magic things happening over the years that gave them some features more reminiscent of dragons than regular demons have. Why did humans ''evolve'' into various Elven species, Vampires, Avians/Harpies etc.? Because they're idiots and their wars over territories surrounding large magical gems resulted in a kingdom trying to destory another kingdom's mother gem, essentially causing magic blasts all across the world surrounding these things. Some territories with smaller human settlements ended up being outside the radius of this magical blast, but everyone else either super mega died, got turned into something not human, or died and _then_ got turned into something not human. Why are the plants in the Underrealm and Aetherrealm so funky? Because I say so, and because magic. I'm all the way on the Fantasy side of things, I'm pretty sure. Sci-Fi isn't usually my cup of tea, at least when it comes to worldbuilding and my own characters. There's definitely some degree of wish-fulfillment in there somewhere (how much we'll see when I've made more progress), but on the Wish-Fulfillment to Speculative scale, I do think I'm further on the speculative side. I like broken worlds. While making an ideal world is just as valid if that's your cup of tea, I personally find it boring to work with. I prefer including flaws in the world and seeing how those flaws affect everything else. I will say though, while I'm not saying they don't exist in my world, I deliberately avoid worldbuilding too heavily around aspects I'm uncomfortable with irl - e.g. I don't generally work with insects or spiders when it comes to fictional fauna, due to heavy phobias. And I don't worldbuild nsfw-leaning aspects of cultures and cities due to the fact that I'm an nsfw-repulsed asexual. I definitely worldbuild for the sake of worldbuilding. While I do draw my OCs or very occasionally do text RPs, I don't plan on doing any major comic stories or writing a book. I just find a lot of joy in Worldbuilding, idk. There's two main reasons I havent made a worldbuilding channel/worldbuilding content. The first is that I can hardly get myself to do a finished piece or write a paragraph of anything nowadays, let along make an entire youtube video, not to mention I don't have a lot of experience with any sort of video creation. The second is that I'm an incredibly anxious person. It's one thing for me to post art - While it's still a bit scary sometimes, it's just pretty or non-pretty pictures. Either you like it or you don't, but that doesn't say anything about me as a person. But putting worldbuilding, putting raw ideas and stories and cultures that came straight from your brainage our there like that, that's scary as hell, so I'm much more hesitant there. Besides, I don't think I'm very good at talking about my ocs and worldbuilding in a way that's not just a hot mess. I'm far from being an organized person, afhsdkfhdsk- I do hope more people make channels like yours though, where they talk about their own projects. I already follow all the channels and series I was able to find, but I just wish there was more

Let me just first say: thank you for yet another awesome and insightful video! Getting onto what I wanted to address however, I just wanted to say, my god, I never actually thought about world building on the spectrum you presented here; the whole wish fulfillment versus speculative angle! I've always just, world built, not really thinking about if it was one or the other, focusing mainly on narratives, societies, science and technology (a given since I'm more sci-fi leaning XD), and of course the characters that inhabit said worlds. Not once have I thought to myself whether or not the stories and worlds I'm writing falls into the sliding scale of wish fulfillment or speculation. Yet, upon hearing your explanation of it, I think I do have some things to add to that. I personally don't see it as a sliding scale all of the time. I mean, generally speaking I could definitely see it being that! But personally? The way I've world built thus far has been a mixture of both. In that I love exploring new civilizations, political theories and philosophies, history, and just seeing how circumstances (extraneous and internal alike) leads to decision-making processes that would come to change or maintain how civilizations, governments, and societies think, act, and behave. Seeing this on a micro to macro scale is totally my jam, and vice versa too. Because I'm always a fan of seeing the world as influencing the characters, yet in some instances, its also the other way around; stories always being a good balance of both so as to give both the character and the setting a feeling of being rich with life. But sorry, back to my point XD What I mean to say is, there are things I address in my stories and world building that are for all intents and purposes "wish fulfillment" in that they are theories that I attempted to put into action in a world, that is supposed to address certain issues in this one. Yet, it's not truly wish fulfillment, as these theories/actions/policies that I world build are built to address issues within the fictional world and setting and as a result intended and unintended consequences from these actions arise regardless. Leading to more actions and reactions taking place and so on and so forth. I'm sorry I'm probably not explaining myself very well XD But I'll try to summarize it as this: I tend to address issues that may be pertinent in our world or in my own experiences as issues that have to be addressed. Yet when I address them it's not always 'wish fulfillment', in that these actions are a result of, and later result in consequences down the line. Consequences both good and bad and anywhere in between. But yeah those are just my thoughts, thank you so much for opening that whole aspect of world building I never really considered!

Not gonna lie, my own worldbuilding has improved a bit because of these videos. What about clasps that are clam shaped for some shiny gold jewelry and accessories? Here's some potential uses aside from decorations in hair I can think of in list form. 1) Could be those belt weights, clamp them onto the belt. 2) Clamp down the loose wrap ends in the tops, or even clamp the top to the strap holding up the pants. 3) A fancier toggle for the leather moccasins, as they could be reused on a new set of shoes each time. Also I'm arguably most often worldbuilding for storytelling, but it's for group RPs often, or games? There always has to be characters, but I try to leave 'main' characters to my friends who will be interacting with the world. Though I worldbuild a lot of different worlds.

"Can you tell I'm a sucker for alliteration?" lol So am I. One of my characters is a man named Logan, and I described him with as many adjectives beginning with L as possible ("large" and "little" cancelled each other out though). That rich purple from snail shells would definitely be more common for the Nautikans than it was for the land folk; since they are actually equipped to hunt underwater and can actively look for the snails). Lessee, I am... Sliding scale of magic vs. science = I'm smack in the middle. Magic exists, but it's also a science. Sliding scale of fantasy vs. sci-fi = I think smack in the middle again. I love the label of "science-fantasy." And for the rest of it...I think I'm mostly speculative, worldbuilding for the sake of storytelling, though I _have_ also dabbled in wish-fulfilment worldbuilding (mostly after a hard day's work, or when my dad turns on the news).

Hi! Just a note, the plural for octopus is octopuses. Many people think it’s ‘octopi’ but the word comes from Greek origin. The ending of a vowel suck as ‘i’ for plural comes from Latin origin where as ‘ses’ comes from Greek origin! Not quite sure how this affects your video at all, it’s amazing and I love your channel! I greatly enjoyed the analysis of world building motivations- hopefully this will help things calm down and become more civil in the discourse of world building! I lean towards speculative, storytelling wirkdbuikding. I am drawn to fantasy and magical elements more than others, but I greatly enjoy speculating an evolved world, and then using magic to royally mess things up- starting with a scientific base and then using magic to twist that and break the science. 😄

This is my magic system, it’s called "stone craft" (Tolad language: L'ndith /ləndiθ/): -Stone craft can have many potential uses, both necessary (transportation, medicine) and trivial (cosmetics, entertainment), but it is seldom used (usually only by elites and scholars) because it can be dangerous. Stone craft manifests itself through precious crystals, called "wizard stones" (or 'khridhvel’nt' /χriðvɛlənt/ in the Tolad /tɔlad/ language). Users summon Stone craft by properly reciting Tolad incantations while making physical contact with wizard stones. If used properly, Stone craft can help its users solve problems and give the user powers such as teleportation, healing, disguise, etc. -Stone craft is mostly used by elites and scholars, as they have the resources to obtain wizard stones and learn incantations in Tolad. Although extremely rare, a handful of individuals (regardless of class) are predisposed by birth to contain quantities of wizard stones in their blood streams, which enables such individuals, called the "stone-blooded" (or 'l’ndrogh' /ləndrɔʁ), to use (or be used for) Tolad incantations without crystals. -Natural wizard stones are a limited resource which is strictly guarded by henchmen who work for the elites. However, some scholars can secretly synthesize artificial wizard stones by using fragments of natural crystals to convert other matter into it. Elites consider this conversion theft, and make attempts to persecute scholars and the stone-blooded for their usage. Stone craft can become addictive if used multiple times during a short period. For incantations, unrounded vowels require two wizard stones (for height and backness) while rounded vowels require a third for roundedness; length and stress also warrant more. Voiceless consonants require two (for place and manner of articulation) with voice and ejectivity also warranting more. Users can be defeated by simply running out of it or using it incorrectly. -After being used for an incantation, wizard stones quickly sublimate into an odorless, toxic gas which can cause temporary paralysis/vision impairment if inhaled (although this usually isn’t fatal and lasts on average temporarily for ten-15 minutes). Large scale sublimation can cause pollution and collateral damage to ecosystems. The stone-blooded are sought after and are particularly vulnerable to abduction/slavery for their natural abundance of wizard stones. Criminals are often punished with harmful incantations (in addition to the temporary paralysis/vision impairment). Wizard stones can be used to cure debilitating illnesses, but there is a price to pay; that illness must be transferred to another lifeform (usually to the aforementioned criminals). Anti-elitist possession of wizard stones is often severely punished by the elites, who fear class mobility from its usage by lower classes. -Wizard stones were created naturally by “paramount comets” (or 'k’al’nv’t' /kʼalənvət/), which impacted and their supernatural minerals became embedded within the ground. Eons later, the Tol tribes settled throughout the rugged landscape which was shaped by craters from paramount comets. As the Tol civilization developed, farmers, paid laborers, slaves, and other workers participated in architecture projects and engineering endeavors, including construction, agriculture and landscaping. One day, according to legend, four Tol slaves were ordered by their master to explore a cave in search of fresh drinking water. One of them brought a torch so they could see through the darkness and deep within the cave, they discovered beautiful rock formations covered in crystals. After one if the slaves yelled in amazement, the unstable ceiling caved in and they were buried in an avalanche of crystals. They were wounded and crystal particles became imbued in their blood streams as a result. Only one of the slaves was still conscious afterwards and made cries for help. To his amazement, the stones surrounding his body sublimated and then he passed out from blood loss and the toxic fumes. Hours later, the four slaves regained consciousness in the cave and miraculously escaped from the pile of crystals. Their language, the Tolad language, was the first language ever uttered within the crystal’s vicinity, which triggered a mutation that only allowed the crystals understand Tolad. There may be undiscovered crystals that haven’t been exposed to Tolad and thus available for another language. They were physiologically altered by the crystals, it fused with their dna and several of their descendants became the stone-blooded from the wizard stone's dominant gene. After emerging from the cave, the four men used their new abilities to free themselves from slavery and become a quadrumvirate which would unite the Tol tribes beneath a federation. Their cooperation and even distribution of land to rule within the federation enabled an era of peace and prosperity for the Tol federation, which balkanized after their deaths. During the power vacuum, Tol elites usurped control of separate territories and became fiercely protective of the wizard stones, often warring with each other over the crystals. Scholars were employed by the elites to study the wizard stones so that elites could utilize their power. -Even today, Stone craft is strictly guarded by the elites and their henchmen, although its existence is no secret. Most people among the lower classes could benefit from wizard stones but most wouldn’t dare try to obtain it from fear of severe punishments by the elites. Additionally, Tolad language resources are scarce beyond the elites’ mansions. Elites and scholars have established a wizard stone society to regulate what Tolad words and phrases can be used for incantations. These approved incantations are recorded in a text called “the canon” (or 't’avdru' /tʼavdru/), which is updated every year. Some rogue scholars illegally practice their own unapproved incantations. Although there is no particular set of clothing that distinguishes users, elites are (needless to say) the most well dressed of the classes and thus, fine linens and robes could possibly indicate usage. However, not all elites can be bothered to learn about wizard stones or how to use it. Additionally, scholars, who are the most familiar with wizard stones, are different from elites in that they generally prefer to stay away from attention. They often disguise themselves among the lower class, which also include some of the stone-blooded. The lack of incentive to procure wizard stones or resources to learn the Tolad language has made many lower class citizens indifferent to Stone craft. tl;dr: rich guys use magic crystals to do stuff sometimes.

My thought on the ballasts on the waist is that for lower class or working individuals the ballasts might just be rocks of an appropriate size and/or weight hung from the belt by twine or netting and for wealthier individuals to maybe use metal. I also think that supervisors might wind up wearing clothing with a cut similar to the working patterns, but with the materials and colors of the upper-class clothing.

I was wondering about if you ever thought about tattoos and how they can play a part of Nautikan culture and even fashion? I now that tattoos can be used as a good way to help prevent sun damage from exposure (I believe their was a women who covered her whole body in tattoos because of how bad the sun was to her skin) also having originally come from the ocean perhaps early Nautikans would have a hard time preserving non stone carved artwork and maybe even text with perhaps individuals tattooing stories on their skin in order to preserve them in an underwater environment. I believe you also said that Nautikans often had a large number of identical siblings maybe making a viable tattoo apart of a coming of age ceremony as a way to say that they have become their own person (It could also be an issue if one committed a crime but they couldn't figure out who it was because their are four people that all look the same without physical differences) really enjoy your content great job!!!

This video series is really interesting, and reminding me of some of my earliest attempts at worlds- I think the first was a magical world where a bunch of children from very different backgrounds discovered they all had magical abilities when they got kidnapped to be sold into slavery and used as child labor and had to work together to escape (I had a very dark imagination as a 10 year old). It's really interesting to track how your race and its clothing has shifted as you've learned more and discovered new things- it makes me wonder how I would develop that old magical world now that I'm much older and know more about what goes into cultures (and about telling stories in general). I wonder where my notes and word documents for that went...

I have an idea for following your religion and death video for Nautikans. If a Nautikan dies young, without having gained legs, three scales would be saved, rather than being ground into paint. Those would be set in the center of the forehead, with the edges of each one inlaid with gold leaf. Many scale designs would be incorporated into the etching as well, with the primary paint color being that of the child’s scales.

Thanks for uploading these videos! I have a story that I’m writing for the fun of it and these videos allow me to think about worldbuilding in a way that I haven’t before. Historically, worldbuilding has come second to character development for me. The world would form around what I wanted the characters to be struggling with. The story I’m working on now is so much deeper than anything I’ve written before and it’s important for me to have cultural differences between two countries. Your videos have helped me fine tune what differences I want. It never occurred to me to have a naming language but after watching your video I knew I needed one. Prior to your videos I was already developing these differences by basing the character names off of two different English speaking cultures. While I don’t mind having those two cultures as the inspiration I do want my characters and world to be different. I love story telling but I think I need to hone my skills for worldbuilding to be a better story teller. So thank you for sharing these videos.

I know this is an old video, but I find it interesting to look at impracticality between women and the wealthy. Perhaps workers would often give their earnings to their spouses, who would do most of the “accounting”, leaving them free to buy more impractical clothing for themselves, even if they aren’t technically “wealthy” the feminine counterpart would still see richer styles than the masculine because of this, and it would lend to the similarities

Very interesting stuff about the source of dyes in your world. I also like how you chose to break up the different clothing styles, it makes a lot of sense. I'm wondering some biology things about this race. Can the species sweat and if so how well does that work under water? Another question is when breathing does it effect their buoyancy and if so do they have much control and or extra lungs designed for this effect? PS: While watching through your videos I remembered that I did start a fish people but they never really fit any of my worlds at the time, I might have to change that. --- I got into world building several years ago when a roleplay mage character became so powerful he was able to craft a world using magic. At the time I was thinking "Why does magic and tech have to be separate?" So I made both strong aspects of my finite universe. I tend to world build for the sake of it, but once I learn how to draw it'll be awesome to create a manga or something for my universe. hum... I do have a hand full of characters but they only ever have a back story and not much else. While I think I lean into Speculation in world building for the time being I ignore wars and religion cause to me both cause too much suffering But I imagine they do exist in my worlds just much smaller. With that said there is hardships and struggle caused by the environment & politics my cultures live in.

I have found your channel throught the algorithm one month ago because I was watching videos of worldbuilding for muy own experience. Your channel is very helpful because we discover your way of thinking and processing, I feel like I'm not the only one in this sinking boat. I have been worldbuiling for nearly (on the 21 of May) two years and I always scrap things because I get more mature and informations. Everyone has their way of processing and I think at critizing an idea isn't thougthful, it is just a way to say "I prefer this idea" but I think that comments with informations like scientific ones are great.You have a knowledge in historical sewing and that's great especially for this video and everyone dives into knowledge to their own purpose. In my world I can't oppose science and magic, I will try to stay very short : an event created a great war and the biggest (but unknown by humans) g.en.ocide of magic beings. So the less physical looking creatures were almost exterminated, and the others had to hide or look like humans. With this, the technologyhad to evolve into a more science fiction-esque technology. On the other side, magic is still used but unknown byt humans. I tend to use logical ways to think for evolutions and things on a long term but I like to juste go "It's magic we don't know". For example I like to play on the facts that human beings (magical creatures and humans) don't know a lot : despite using the greatest technology, they just explain how physically things were created. But they are blanks in history because people forgot that Gods created everything and even took parts in daily life. I like to personnaly explain this feature with forgetting and how history has evolved. In our world you can't just explain why a tradition exists,only if you really deep dive in it. A lot of history is quetsioning and theroizing with a some sort of proofsSo I Would say I'm more on the speculation side of worlbuilding because I prefer to think of objects as impacts (causes and consequences). For me it's very linear. Oh God this is so long. I would love too to see more worlbuilder channels, maybe some of them are hidden Tolkiens. I hope that you channel gets more subscribers ! Yes it defiantly seems everyones world building is very different. Mine personally is (almost) fully for my self but I am writing books at the same time... doesn't matter. But unlike most world builders I see I like to make things tricky for me. I have a realm system... kind of like a solar system but.. bigger. like a bunch of dimensions. There's umbrella realms, there's different cultures, there's places similar to one another but different enough to be separate. There's three main realms I talk of. TAR (the one I talk most on), ThR (is literally earth), and CR (might as well be a concept in universe) which are all umbrella realms. And there's billions of them these umbrella realms alone and within each umbrella realm are infinite realms. It's hard to explain how and why it ended up like this... I've been doing this since I was 10. And how I manage to world build with this system is even harder to explain. My computer and brain might explode with all the information I've come up with. I have at least 5 languages which are modge-podged together, at least 4 human-like species and 20 subspecies, maybe 20-30 animals, 5 histories from different umbrella-umbrella realms (umbrella realm-ception lol), a bunch of book ideas, and I'm no where near done. And I tend to focus on biology more then other things. Thinking of how creatures would procreate and evolve, etc. The only similarity I've seen between our methods are the ways we explain the earth influences. That humans are like aliens to this world and got bred into the species. Which is almost exactly like how I did it. And a lot of the history and controversies within the society are based of that. I just find it so interesting how different we all world build.

Wewd does well in wet environments. Why not wooden sandals with whatever kind of sock or foot garment was convenient? That or the leather shoe material could be replaceable while the brass clasps or chains that held the leather shoe or sock to the foot was reused.

I love this series I love learning but I haven't seen someone talked about the science of world building itself, how people world building and the differences Also I wanna share another world building series I've been watch, Alien Biosphere. There Ten episode discussing the evolution of aliens and the world. It's pretty cool! For the scales: I think i align more to the science side but I still have magic, buts it's structure to it with rules and origins I started out with wishful filment, my first was an insert character story to escape my problems lol. But I've became more speculative as i introduced conflict but that start of wishful filment is still their, the main goal is to fix something or make things better. I like stories, I'm planning to make videos on my worlds to tell these stories i have in my head. But doing the actual world building of the planet, culture, environment, and stuff like that is really fun. That being said, i do it for the characters more than the actual world. I got like 50 of them lol. Someone should make an online quiz of this..

I don’t know, I feel like I’m usually a story telling world builder, but at that point I was never really digging into the world building so I found myself at a cross road. My current project I’ve decided that I’m not going to write a story in my world until I know what it is

I'm excited to see what the city looks like and the culture around how they interact, hopefully. The cross belts could be gendered because of the jobs people in culture used? If you wanted to do a reversal of our current world, the men could be gatherers and the women could be hunters. A hunter in the sea would need to be swift and go around faster, while the gatherer might need to go deeper to collect certain kelps and fish. So men as gatherers needed more while women needed less so they could swim and hunt easier at the surface level where the bigger fish are.

When it comes to the science vs magic worldbuilding, I definitely do both, but in different contexts. When I worldbuild just for the sake of it I go for the evolution method, I evolve the languages, the animals, the cultures, the clothes, even the food. But that process is never finished and I never get to actually writing anything. When I worldbuild for a story, I either make it somewhat reasonably realistic, but handwave the specifics, or I make it explicitly magical with complete disregard for the laws of physics, genetics, etc. Otherwise I'll just never get anything done (not that I ever get anything done...)

i love your videos! seeing the new developments in your worldbuulding is an interesting view into how the process of worldbuilding works, i think. i mostly worldbuild for the sake of enjoying worldbuilding, but i also lean more towards speculative than wish-fulfillment worldbuilding, just because i find thinking about societies that aren't perfect more interesting. i do tend to include some wish-fulfillment aspects, though: i don't really create worlds where violent transphobia or homophobia are prevalent, for example, just because that's not something i enjoy creating or thinking about. i think i tend to lean more towards magic in building the fundamental rules and basic facts of the world and its inhabitants, but more towards science when building societies, cultures, histories, etc. for example, i don't care that much about whether a winged humanoid species could scientifically speaking evolve, but if their culture doesn't feel like something that could develop based on their environment, biology, the world, etc., it rings false to me in a way that i don't generally enjoy.

While I don't know if they actually got yoinked, I'd be sad to see the nets go. The fabric wrap less so, but the idea of intricately created nets created with beads is really interesting especially considering how they could be use as a bag or something like that depending on how they were closed and worn.

Yes, the crochet nets are there. I just didn’t have anything new to add to the subject and I didn’t feel like redrawing them 😬
