Check out bossa's latest project. They are having another shot at making this type of game

GOOD NEWS. MAYBE. LOST SKIES IS IN DEVELOPMENT. Looks like a smaller scale co-op worlds Adrift, but that could be more sustainable for the devs! Maybe a step towards full multiplayer again someday??

@@Timsturbs The engine wasn't what killed WA, SpatialOS was what did. server costs were the thing that drove the game straight down into an unsustainable sinkhole

@@Legiaseth really? i thought the game being a laggy mess and them tired trying to optimize it is what killed it.

@@Timsturbs not exactly, even though that had a tiny part of it. Pretty sure what happened was all the physics from everything in the game did create some server stress, which prompted SpatialOS to increase the server prices, which in turn ate away at Bossa's earnings at an alarming rate

I wish it could have, but there was simply no way. Sadly, the whole single server MMO thing didn't work out, the developers were using SpatialOS to help run the servers, but that is a proprietary tech that they had to go through another company to get, which ended up having prohibitive costs. They tried to run the game for as long as they could, but in the end they lost more money than they earned, and couldn't see a way to sustain the game. Using that tech also meant they couldn't release a version that didn't depend on it, without basically remaking the game from the ground up, and they already ran out of money to spend on doing that by that point, at least without bringing the rest of the studio down with the game. At least, they still have the assets and their code lying around somewhere, if they ever want to revisit the genre in the future, don't think we'll ever see the same exact game come back though.
