When I was a little girl in the 1960’s I saw a young man do this dance. I asked him to dance. I loved it and told everyone to come see him. He ran off and disappeared. I was horrified. I found out later that it was illegal for him to do the dance. Glad that times have changed. Wherever he is, I hope all is well with him.

@@ramkc9129 Real story. As a little girl I didn’t know it was illegal. After I saw him do the hoop dance I ran and told everyone I saw how wonderful it was and to come see him. @@ramkc9129 The only threat this country has deemed serious enough are Native Americans. Why? Because they're the original inhabitants of this land. As a result, various policies were placed in order to limit their power. I won't go into detail about such policies because they're too long and many. However, I will say that they had NO right to religious practice until 1978. That's right. The First Amendment didn't apply to them. Native Americans (which include Alaskan Inuits and Native Hawaiians), could not practice ANY form of "Native" religion. This encompasses ceremonies, dances, songs, and certain attire. For example, wearing eagle feathers is sacred to many Native peoples and are part of their attire. However, the eagle is an endangered species. As a result, using eagle feathers was illegal. After much advocacy, a resolution was agreed upon. Native peoples could acquire feathers from dead eagles. If an eagle died at a sanctuary or zoo for example, the sanctuary/zoo has to send the feathers to Native nations.

@@natalieschuette3679 He's wrong. Pow-wows do not always have "hoop dancers" or contest. And no, you did not offend anyone. Snatchy is just being rude because he thinks pow-wows are traditional. They are not. Pow-wows are left overs from the Wild West shows with Bill Cody and a circus to spit on Indians for staged massacres. Today, pow-wows are social or contest for money prizes. Even singers at the drum get paid. These are not ceremonial. Frybread, pow-wows and hoop dancing are modern pan Indian results to entertain natives and non natives alike.

At one point, before the dancer REALLY got started, it reminded me of how my classmates and I would play "jump rope" during recess on the playground, more than 50 years ago. Two long ropes, in the left and right hands of a girl on each end, would be spun like an egg beater on the pavement, and this was called Double Dutch. If a girl could jump into the egg beater and jump both ropes at the same time, she was accepted as one of the cool kids. Australian aboriginals take pride in their culture, but just look at them. How much of their 'culture' has come from white man? simple start...when did aboriginals get a 'traditional' flag?
@bry7487
@bry7487 3 года назад
@@davidedwards3361 your comment shows how ignorant you are about the Aboriginals. They lost their culture when the white man came over and stole children from their families and forced them to be white. Aboriginals have their own culture that survived for thousands of years before white colonisers came over. Luckily, they are rediscovering and reclaiming their traditional culture but what do you expect them to do? Go into the outback and live a primitive life to prove to you that they have their own culture?

There are titles for world champion hoop dancers, And many other Native American, Or American Indian Style of dance. Look some up on RU-vid! You'll be blown away... Pow wow, Fancy dancers, Native American Dance competitions.. Just a couple Search terms to start With. The women's Dances are escaping me at the moment... And don't ever make the insult of referring To their regalia as a costume... Thankfully I've never done it but I'll save you The tongue Lashing now that I know! Also really cool little known sport called Indian relay... It's something really modern done on horseback. Wild! Enjoy and always remember who was here 1st . Indigenous respect.
