#10 Edwin Edwards
Governor of Louisiana from 1972 to 1980, 1984 to 1988, and 1992 to 1996, serving 16 years total in office, or 5,784 days, the sixth-longest amount of time in office for any governor since the Constitution.
Widely considered one of the most corrupt governors in American history, he actually got caught for racketeering, extortion, money laundering, mail fraud, wire fraud, and conspiracy. He went to federal prison for eight years. He was unapologetic about receiving illegal campaign donations. He was accused of obstruction of justice and bribery. The only reason why Edwards is not higher up on my list is because is dedication to civil rights and protecting minorities and the poor.
#9 Joel Aldrich Matteson
Oh Louisiana and Illinois. You both have a long history of electing corrupt and just, plain horrible governors. And Matteson is one of them. Governor of Illinois from 1853 to 1857, he actually had a few accomplishments during his term. This was when Illinois began public education, and Matteson oversaw a strong economy and the reduction of the state’s debt. However, after he got out of office people started to find out about his shadiness.

Fun fact about Edwin Edwards: During the 1991 Louisiana gubernatorial election, when Edwards was elected to his fourth non-consecutive term as governor, my mom was living in New Orleans. Edwards was running against David Duke, former Grand Wizard of the KKK who was then a member of the Louisiana House of Representatives, and a slogan by Edwards was "Better the crook than the racist".

@Yukiwodashite
@Yukiwodashite 2 года назад
@@ADT1995 it wasn't just one thing it was a lot of things to be honest. First of all he could be down right nasty at town halls and things like that. If someone disagreed with him, it was not exactly uncommon for him to go off on citizens calling them stupid and things like that. For example, he was a big proponent of reducing the budget to public schools saying that schools in New Jersey got too much money. But multiple people pointed out the fact that his own children went to private school and as a result wouldn't be impacted by the types of things he was trying to implement. Thus led to several situations where Christie basically lost his s*** because how dare they bring his children into this. He was super aggressive and argumentative in a way that you really don't see that often in politicians, especially the way that he was willing to argue with citizens openly. Then you had the big one, bridgegate where several of his top officials intentionally created traffic on a bridge to mess with a political rival. People were stuck on a bridge for hours all because they wanted to mess with some mayor. Highly illegal stuff and a good chunk of his political inner circle was directly responsible. Prosecutors were never able to directly tie him to the incident, but a lot of people liberals and conservatives Wonder to this day if he might have been aware of it. Many of these people were people he worked closely with for many years, and a few of them said he didn't know about it. Then you have things like the Exxon Mobil case. Long story short. Years ago ExxonMobil directly created an environmental disaster in New Jersey through what was proven in the courts to be negligence. I don't remember what the number was exactly, but they cause many millions of dollars of damages. Originally it looks like they were going to pay most of those damages out to the people of New Jersey. But Chris Christie seriously campaigned and used political influence to convince people that if we punish ExxonMobil for the crime that they committed, then they might leave the state of New Jersey and we wouldn't have them as a business partner. He was very overly more worried about that than them having to make up for what damages they caused. Once again a lot of people conservative and liberal did not like his focus here. There was a time where he closed the beaches, and then went with his family to the beach when legally nobody but himself was able to visit them. There were quite a few other things but the real killer I think at the end was the fact that he ran off to go run for president and basically stopped being governor. He was practically never in New Jersey once his campaign started, and when journalist asked him about it, he would basically just get all snarky and not really give a good answer why he never was in the state. It got so bad that when we had a major hurricane and people were without power and with damaged houses, even then he didn't come back to the state he was still going state to state campaigning. This is an especially infamous one because when journalists asked him why he wasn't helping his state in a time of need, he said what do you expect me to do grab a mop. Basically at the end of the day, he knew that he was never going to win New Jersey even if he did have a chance to become president which he didn't. So he didn't care and at that point he knew that most people in New Jersey really didn't like him.

As someone who’s family originated from and still has ties to Louisiana, I’m honestly really surprised that Bobby Jindal didn’t get a dishonorable mention. Everyone in my family, even the hardcore republicans, absolutely despised him, and almost 90% of all Louisianans hated him too, given his approval rating was almost in the single digits right before John Bel Edwards got sworn in. He also gutted the state’s education system and the mental health system, and was basically the reason Louisiana got into so much debt and ranks so low compared to the rest of the country.

Two points about two of the worst governors you listed: Boggs and Young. Because there are a few points I think you missed. Mostly about Brigham Young, but historical context isn't always easy to sum up in a 10-15 minute video, is it? To be fair to Boggs, it was done more out of fear and rumor than outright hatred. He was badly misinformed about the exact causes of the Missouri Mormon War and the motivations of the Saints themselves. It didn't help that when a state militia improperly arrested three or so members and harassed the locals that a Mormon militia fought and defeated them at the battle of Crooked Creek. Losses were relatively light on both sides, but the paranoia generated from it was a huge factor in the Extermination Order.
@jeremyo3596
@jeremyo3596 5 лет назад
As for Brigham Young, there are MULTIPLE misconceptions. Now I can't say I agree with all he did, but many of his actions do make sense when looked at more closely. Again, it's not easy to sum up in a short video, and a comment will take a while, so here are a few points. 1. Brigham Young and the Mormons arrived in Utah having first been kicked out by the US. Eventually, the region fell into US hands once more, and already his efforts to carry out colonization in the west made him the de facto leader. His leadership may certainly have blended church and state and was the predominant force in Utah. For the Mormons who lived in Utah this wasn't much of an issue. The majority more or less sustained him anyways. Non-members didn't start arriving in significant numbers until well after the initial settlement and shortly after Young's official tenure. And even before, calling him a "tyrant" would be quite a bit of an exaggeration. 2. Was slavery a "divine institution?" Consider it was emancipation, nor equality, that many abolitionists fought for. Most governors in the South would have made similar statements, and a majority of them aren't mentioned in this video's list. Brigham Young's views were neither uncommon for his time or contemporaries. However, there are many different types of slavery each with their own practices. While Young, known for his own strong polemics, didn't decry slavery, he certainly taught against many acts of cruelty. The type of slavery that was taught was more akin to Biblical (old testament) directives, which regarding slavery (and especially compared to the contemporary American slave economy) were fair for their day.
@jeremyo3596
@jeremyo3596 5 лет назад
3. Polygamy. It was a thing. But it was it's own thing. Nor was it meant for the sexual pleasure of the polygamist man. It is telling that as the debate to end polygamy began, 1st generation feminists in Utah (of the universal suffrage crowd) DEFENDED polygamy. To marry a second or another wife a man needed the consent of a) the married, b) his current wife and c) to consult with an authority. MOST Mormons never had more than one spouse at a time and the leaders did NOT hog young women for themselves. In fact, the whole purpose was to provide for widows and, with their consent, give them children in their name. Finally, a weird tangent, there were ceremonial marriages as well, which were not sexually consummated. The upshot of all this was that the actual number of wives that Young had relations with is smaller than the official number of wives he had. Nor did he run orgies every Friday night, or at all.
@jeremyo3596
@jeremyo3596 5 лет назад
4. Mormons and Natives often did come into conflict. However, Young didn't declare war on them because they wouldn't accept the Church. Young initially discouraged proactive missionary efforts to neighboring tribes (though converts were accepted), chose the Salt Lake Valley over Utah Valley (Provo) because the Utes lived there, and throughout his life made EXTENSIVE efforts to reach out and befriend native tribes. Some of these got along with Mormons alright, others did not. Most were mixed. The real source of conflict was over ownership of the land, and more generally when Mormons had with some individual raider who took a few cattle from them. The idea that the Mormons waged war on the natives for rejecting their God is historically inaccurate.

In my lifetime, Illinois has had 4 govenors sent to federal prison. Otto Kerner went to prison for accepting bribes to set favorable horse racing dates. Dan Walker went to jail for bank fraud. Officials were getting kickbacks, so that unqualified truck drivers could get their commercial driver's licenses. Of course, Rod Blagojevich went to prison for trying to sell the appointment to Barack Obama's vacated Senate seat.

The only damage on the protesters side was that someone committed arson to the rotc building (and got away with it 51 years later and no one knows who did it) and guard was already on campus at that point. Using the first amendment rights of free speech and free assembly is not justification for murder....... Rhoads used a bar fight downtown (literally a mile away) as a way to scapegoat and justify national guard presence. Another governor that many people in my home state of Louisiana consider the worst governor in our state’s history is our previous governor, Bobby Jindal. Like Chris Christie, Jindal was very popular early in his tenure, but his approval ratings plummeted and were in the 20s by the time his second term ended. Jindal didn’t have any scandals like Edwin Edwards, but he inherited a large budget surplus when he became governor and left office with the largest budget deficit in our state’s history. Our budget was in a crisis in 2016. Our economy has improved since then, but we’re still in recovery mode. Jindal was also hardly in Louisiana his last year in office because of his Presidential campaign, which went nowhere. He has kept a low profile since leaving office in 2016. Just a little honorable mention.

Several states argued during the Constitutional Convention that the state's had the right to repeal their adoption of the Constitution, three, including Virginia, wrote this statement into their adoption document. Conventions were called in the southern states and the representatives of the people voted overwhelmingly to rescind their adoption of the Constitution.

He ordered the National Guard to prevent Negro students from entering white schools even though the Supreme Court had reversed the doctrine of "separaate but equal schools for whites and blacks" Southern states couldn't or wouldn't proived equal schools for black kids and many white kids went to private schools that blacks could not afford. So the law wasn't effectively working for the purpose of equality so the Supreme Court mandated that all children shall be entitled to the same quality of education regardless of race.. Faubus would not integrate public schools and stood on the steps of the Little Rock High School claiming the segregation was forever, surrounded by the National Guard that he called up to keep black students from entering. the school. Eisenhower was advised that while in peacetime and except during national emergencies and to keep the peace. the state governor is the commander of the National Guard. Eisenhower decided to declare a national emergency because Arkansas had ndecided to defy the Constitution and other southern states were threatening to do the same. So he nationailized the Guard and the nexy day they were escorting black chidren to school on the same campuses where white people were screaming threats , cursing, and even spitting and trying to strike these kids while the guard tried to hold the whites back.

You did a very good job on this list. It is hard to argue with your choices. I am a political junkie, there are numerous bad governors that no one ever heard of, but you have done your research..... well done. A plus

To be fair to Brigham Young he had nothing to do with the Mountain Meadows Massacre and had actually ordered the militia to leave the travelers alone.

Good video just missing a few 2 from Illinois (my old home state just for that alone I am glad I am in Iowa now) But George Ryan and I just call him Bloggo 2 govs that go to prison and don't forget Sarah Palin. I had a brother who lived in Alaska and we talked about trading governors like you do baseball players just for fun. But you have a good list also enjoy all the presidential elections from the past those are good to look at too.

I'm a member of the Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-Day Saints (AKA The Mormon Church), and I'm not here to completely disagree, just to add a little perspective from an ancestor of Brigham Young and a future student of BYU. We believe that Brigham Young was a Prophet who was called of God to lead the church, and so to the Saints in Utah we believe that his leadership and guidance that brought our ancestors to Salt Lake was a result of divine revelation. The power that he issued and used during his rule as governor doesn't bother/offend the members of the church who lived in the state. The notion of separation of Church and State was completely absent during his rule, but as perceived from the Utahns in the state it was no big deal at all. The Mountain Meadows Massacre was not his fault and was rather a result of prominent fear and miscommunication and is a great misstep in the Church's history. While it was under his administration, he did not order the massacre and attempted to stop it before it actually occurred. Man, this comment is already super long, but Polygamy is a part of our church's history that has since been amended and done away with. We believe that the practice of polygamy was ordered by God during the early years of the church, and it was a custom for their society and one of the reasons our ancestors were persecuted by others. While he practiced it, we see it as a fulfillment of his role as a prophet to obey God's commands. The racism displayed by him is absolutely horrible, and the church disavows racism today. It was a different time and culture to be sure, but his statements are despicable today. Brigham Young's authoritative rule is better understood not as a governor but as a Prophet for a group of persecuted pioneers who trekked across fields and plains to make it to the land that their descendants live in today. He was not acting as a governor for the Utah territory, but rather as a leader of a church to defend its members. Not trying to totally inexcuse his actions because no human is perfect, but his authoritative rule is considered by church members as directed by a loving God who strives to give joy to all his children. I love the content, keep it up!

When the Mormons showed up, there were at least 20000 Indians (low estimates). By Brigham's death only about 3,000 remained. If that isn't a failure of leadership, grotesque racism, then I don't know what is. Look up the extermination order against the Utah Timpanogas Indians. If that isn't genocide, I don't know what is.

I was poised to let you know about Peter Burnett, as I had come across him in my research and I assumed he was not on your radar. I was pleased to see that he made the list, but you didn't mention that, despite the honor of being the first U.S. governor of California, he resigned like a whiny little b*** when an anti-slavery vote didn't go his way.
