Worst Gifts Ideas by Enneagram Type 

I'm a 5, and I hate nothing more than cheap, cluttery knick knacks 😬. I actually like gift cards, practical things I actually needed, and low key experiences with my loved ones. I would rather be forgotten than get a bunch of random gifts that I will not use but will feel too guilty to donate lol.

Lemme explain why we 4 are so difficult to buy gifts for - ‘cause we want gifts to be MEANINGFUL. I always wonder what pp were thinking when getting the gift, and it’s just sad when apparently it was just like, “she needs a new vaccum, so there” lol. Much different than, “I saw this mug that says something funny that made me think of you.” I’m also convinced I can tell the gifter’s level of affection by their gift (no pressure 😆)

I'm a 5, and I'd prefer a gift card to a local book shop that has a cafe. Then leave me alone for a few hours :)

Oh I got you covered for 4 gifts!! Some general 4 ideas: books you know they'll love, things that are too fancy to justify buying themselves, literally anything that made you think of them when you saw it, "extra" accessories related to their hobbies (patterned rolling pin, a set of unique crochet hooks, stationery items), tickets to a play/ballet/concert, etc., an experience you take them on where new surprises keep unfurling, anything you make yourself, artwork you commissioned for them, anything from an antique store or estate sale, anything you got on your travels. Think beauty, think special, think personal. Some really specific 4 ideas: morse code jewelry that has a secret message only the wearer and gifter know, fridge word magnets with "emotions" words, an adorable apron, wax seals or calligraphy pens, a board game you got from a start-up, essential oil diffuser for their car, rubber stamps, specdrums. Let me know if you need any more 😂

As a nine, if I finally tell you what is on my Christmas list: 1) welcome to the inner circle of trust 2) you better be sure you get exactly what I requested or else you are booted out of the inner circle. Also gift cards are always the answer - I don’t have to tell you what I want and you don’t have to get the wrong brand/size/color of thing.

Better gifts for each type Type 1: Marie Kondo's "The Life Changing Magic of Tidying Up" if they don't already have a copy of it. Also, anything that can help them improve on them staying organized so storage containers. Type 2: Definitely get them something pretty like a vase or some kind of bath kit with lots of scents. Type 3: Concert or theatre tickets, maybe a trip. Or their favorite movie on blu-ray. Type 4: As an Enneagram 4, I'll just speak for myself. Personally, I would actually like a planner or a new journal. Also, vinyl records, especially Taylor Swift's latest album. Type 5: There’s this cool subscription box mystery solving game called Hunt A Killer that I think a Type 5 would really enjoy. Any books relating to something they like would also work. Type 6: Get them something that makes them laugh. If ANY type should get a planner that they don't already have, a Type 6 should get one. Type 7: Something relating to making mixed drinks or some new cool way to make coffee. Type 8: Type 8s all have a list, but I think a lot of type 8s would love a literal punching bag or a pillow or some cool new spices. Type 9: Cozy gifts for sure. Fuzzy slippers, a nice bathrobe, weighted or heated blanket. You get the idea.

5 here: don't buy my any product that I would research first. Don't buy clutter. Don't waste money. Yeah, probably just don't buy me anything. Which is what my family finally figured out. Give me the gift of the house to myself. Best gift ever.

I'm a 9 who loves hiking and board games. I also love cozy blankets and bath robes and specialty teas. Gift cards are a HARD PASS - no effort. I know I'm a 9, there is no disputing my core desire, but I also really relate to the 4 w/ so much of the content on this channel, including this one... stay away from the trends... and Bath and Body Works!

As a 4, I'd rather receive no gift at all rather than meaningless clutter. I like giving gifts but I typically hate receiving them. I hate the pressure of having to convey delight and appreciation and, conversely, I hate feeling sad and disappointed because the gift giver obviously doesn't know me at all. When I receive anything with thought, care and meaning - oh boy it lifts my spirits and fills my heart. I'm a 4w5, so it's not terribly difficult. An interesting book on dinosaurs or sustainable architecture will make me your friend for life.

As a 4, I have come to appreciate experiences so much more than a gift. These experiences create memories I can cherish for life!

As a one: I totally agree with this!!! Also, I LOVE gift cards because then I can pick what I actually want! But only to stores I actually go to…worst store to get me a gift card to: Party City. (I know that’s random but I HATE THAT STORE! Full of the most pointless things ever!) Everything I want should be something that I will actually use or wear. I actually like when people ask me what I want because then I know they won’t give me something random or pointless.

as a 4, I'd say I'd love a really nice handcrafted journal, unique jewelry piece that is my favorite gem stone, an experience to somewhere I've always wanted to go or a place I've never thought about but the gifter knows I'd love it or a book about my favorite topic thats a unique find. Basically something that will blow me away with its unique thoughtful-ness lol.

I honestly enjoy the ability to buy things for myself without guilt. I actually LIKE gift cards. I especially value being able to shop during sales to get the biggest bang for my buck. Therefore, money at Christmas to cancel out purchases made during Black Friday sales is the perfect gift for me!

From a 5(w4 549 sp/sx)-- For a few years in high school, I put on urban scavenger hunts for my birthday. This might seem counter-intuitive for a 5, but it was actually perfect for me. I got to strategize and invent for my birthday instead of planning a party, and on the actual day I would pick one friend to help me and put everyone else in teams to do the hunt, while we floated between them observing and judging. 💀 Anyway. One year, multiple people were carrying around cakes or cupcakes all night. I thought this was kind of odd, but didn't think much of it because birthdays = cake. When the hunt was over we would all meet at a restaurant for dinner to tally points and eat. At the end of the meal I was presented with two or three cakes and a host of cupcakes. When they opened the boxes, they were all decorated with pretty frosting swear words and insults. I almost cried. In a good way. I should mention that this was around 2010, when those things were first floating around tumblr and the like, and I (somewhat embarrassingly now) thought they were hilarious. The absolute peak of visual comedy. But I was bewildered that my friends all seemed to have read my mind. I asked them "How did you know I love these??" and they all looked at me like I was crazy. One of them told me "Dude, you dropped so many hints." Turns out that a few hyper-fixation cycles before I couldn't shut up about how funny they were, and had since completely forgotten I'd ever mentioned them. It was kind of overwhelming, knowing that my friends really listened to the stupid things I talked about, and remembered them, and took the time and effort to make these cakes, and then carted them around all night. Cake boxes are annoying! They ran around downtown for hours! It rained! I think in the moment it was just funny and kind of magical, but that memory only means more to me as I age and understand more about myself. All this to say: I think the best way to gift for your 5 (or maybe just your 5w4), is to make a note of the things they mention a lot (and there will be things we mention A LOT, sorry), and use that knowledge to inform your gift. That's probably good advice for everyone, really. But we 5s know we talk a lot about things that might not be interesting to our loved ones, and we don't always expect or even need you to be really listening to us. It's such a lovely surprise to find out you were. Bonus points if you put in a little personal effort, it shows us that we're not a problem for you. We often think we are. Also! It doesn't need to be so elaborate. This year, my mother made an e-card on MS Paint using a screengrab from a show I really loved earlier in the year (and again, had practically forgotten about 🙃). It really made me smile. More specific 5 gift ideas: -Gift card for UberEats or Doordash or whatever. I once saw "getting food delivered" on a post about 5 self care and I've never resonated with something so hard. -Two of something we love or a back up. 5s are terrified of scarcity! It's really hard for me to enjoy something if I feel like I'm using it up or wearing it out. Having a second thing feels luxurious and safe. -Bookstore gift card. Lets us get what we really want and gives us the experience of being in a place full of books, which is very calming and makes me feel cultured and at home. Please don't buy us books unless you're reaaaaally sure we want them. -Scribd membership. Netflix for books! Look it up! -Like 8s, something from the list!! Surprises are nice, but so is being heard and having needs met! 5s need to feel like their needs aren't a problem. -That bouquet of the month club that 4s wouldn't appreciate might be perfect for us, actually. It's a well kept secret, but 5s love beauty. I once heard it described like "Beauty slips in the backdoor of the mind so we can just appreciate a thing before we over-analyze it." However, I don't think a five would ever spend money on something so lavish and indulgent as recurring flowers. Help us get out of our heads and touch grass, in a nice way. -For 5w4s specifically, we're likely to be into oddities or things that are a little macabre. I saw a post below from 5 minimalists, but that's not all of us. I like functional things, but I like curios as well. Think anatomical charts, occult/esoteric symbolism, those cute crochet dissection specimens, that kind of thing. If you hand your 5w4 something pretty and strange and say "This made me think of you", I can almost guarantee a smile. Well look at that, I wrote an essay. Typical. Hope this helps with the more opaque 5s in your life.

Honestly as a 4 I like gift cards if it’s to somewhere super unique like once my cousin got me a gift card to Etsy and I loved it cause I could pick something totally special and specific. So for gift cards it totally depends on the place it’s for

As a One, if I give someone specific info about a request, then they need to follow it! If I say I want, idk, new food storage containers like Pyrex, but it needs to all be square, then it doesn't matter how casual it sounded when I said it, DO NOT DEVIATE. Going with that example, if someone got me square Pyrex, now I'll have to completely change up my cupboard organization and I'll be super annoyed. People can take liberties with other aspects of the gift - I can lean into my 7 strength and have fun with different colors, or something off the wall, or whatever - but if I told you something specific then believe me, I know what things work and what things don't, and you'll mess up my system if you don't listen. It's worse getting something I asked for but not having the "rule" I gave them respected, than not getting the thing at all lol.

I’m a type 4. I actually love gift cards so long as they’re for stores I actually like. I don’t mind getting Bath & Body Works, so long as it it’s not candles. I don’t use candles, they just sit in the closet and collect dust. For me, the worst gift would be clothes or jewelry because I’m very picky about my style and I don’t want people picking out my clothes for me because they usually get it wrong. My mom is the only person alive who is good at picking out clothing and jewelry I’d actually wear.

Yes! As a one, I have to pick out my own decor. If everyone gave me decor, it would lack cohesion and be awful, and probably not match my style. I'm getting married next year and I am already psyching myself up to smile at people when they give me cutesy decor that I don't want or have a use for.

4 w 5 It’s true about the wildflowers. I would definitely take something grown from your garden. I Will take a coffee table book filled with beautiful photos or art.

An useful thing to note is that more socially focussed types like 2, 7 or 6 enjoy stuff more if they can bring someone. So if you give them a spa coupon, free travel, a concert ticket etc. either go with them or ive them a second one so they can bring a friend. (Some of you might think this is obvious but for me as a 5 it is not. I think nothing of going to restaurants, musuems etc. all on my own.)

I agree mostly with 4! I don't want anything that everyone else wants, it really does feel thoughtless. I also don't want anything useless to me. I personally do like candles, though...😄 Personally, I'd love anything that helps with the crafting I do, anything that helps me with ADHD (ask me which toys work for me!), and anything that involves an inside joke. I've long since stopped holding on to useless items just because they were gifts.

I’m a 4w5. When I was a kid, i watched the movie Running on Empty with River Phoenix. From then on, my staple answer for gifts was “Something you make, or something you find.” 35 years later, thats still my answer. *and no, “I found this on amazon.” Does not count.)

As a 9, my husband and I just got a 2nd set of hiking sticks😂 I also don’t enjoy puzzles but yarn, I love yarn. I am crocheter.

As a 4, I love getting artsy stuff from my artistic friends because even if it’s not something I would have have bought to display in my home, if a friend clearly put something in it that I like or that is from an inside joke we have or memory, I will love it. From my not so artsy friends I give them a theme, like stars and moons, and then they usually search that from Amazon and most of the gifts are interesting.

I'm an 8 and I could not agree more! I make a list for a reason. Last Christmas my husband asked what I wanted, I told him what I wanted and sent him a link to the exact item. I could tell by the shape of the box under the tree it was not what I asked for. 1) the gift he did get was nice and I appreciate it. 2) I was online by 5pm on Christmas ordering myself the frickin gift I wanted. 3) I'm still like, yo, I gave you the gift list. Stick to it.

I'm a three and I don't mind gift cards. I do really appreciate thoughtful, interesting gifts but I never shop for myself unless it's with a gift card so I enjoy being given that experience.

I will say as a type 5, I use my ring light all the time! I put it in my laundry closet bc it's so dark in there. lol

I am cracking up over the "not only what I ask for" for 4's. Get me something unique that proves you know me and listen to me but not something popular. My poor husband.

9w1 -- I like tea and coffee, stationery, books, cozy sweaters, beeswax candles, plants, gardening stuff, anything purchased from small/local businesses or with a charity focus. Dislike last-minute surprises that deviate from my plan (concert tickets, travel, etc), no knick knacks, nothing I have to display in my house for the next 2 years, and definitely not Bath and Body Works, haha!

6 here. I constantly evangelize my favorite brands and products. It really shouldn't be that hard to buy for me without asking me to send a list of links! Just pay attention all year when I tell you what I like. Even if it's not anything fun, a basket of my favorite cleaners is better than a generic gift or text requesting a specific wish list. Flip side of that, I'm a walking file cabinet of information on my people and I get a lot of joy from giving thoughtful gifts.

I’m a 6, practical gifts I know I like are the best. Sunscreen but only the kind I want would be awesome. A Starbucks gift card is ok too. I never go there so it’s a treat. I’d probably get my go to cappuccino anyways but still that’s a nice safe choice.

As a 7, I can tell you that shopping is so boring! And if I now have a gift card, it's like this enforced boring shopping trip that I'm supposed to say thank-you for. I'm trying to adjust my mind set, and it might be working. I don't mind no gift, as long as I'm not forgotten. Come over and hang out! Gift is optional. If it's something perfect for me, of course I prefer that! But I love a funny "I saw this and thought of you" gift, and it can even be an oddly shaped piece of driftwood. I will probably love it!

I love that the two of you are opposites "something not on the list" and "stick to the list" 🤣 Also as a 7: gift cards suck because it's simple and boring. I'd much rather have a random, spontaneous item that makes you say "this seems weird, but I thought of you and here's why." A gift card feels like getting NOTHING (with the exception of a favorite restaurant or activity. A promise to hang out together later). If I buy it myself, it's not a gift. I'd much rather get nothing than be forced to do the gift shopping *for* you and have to report back what I got.

As a 7, I actually do like gift cards if they're for places I really like. Especially if that's Sweet Frog or Chick-Fil-A. XD But some of that could also be that I am 14 and very broke, so if I want to get together with friends out someplace, I like to have money for eating out. So I guess the reason I like gift cards (to restaurants) is because to me, that gift card = friend time, which we all know is very important to a 7. 😉

Uh as a 5 I 100% would love a karaoke machine. But don’t get me wrong I will not be sharing it with anyone or singing with anyone. It would purely be for me to sing sad songs to myself when l’m in my comfort space

Being a 2 SP, if I don't get pampering/self-care stuff at Xmas, I won't have any until potentially the Xmas after. A small amount can be good so there's less to clutter up your dresser or edge of the bath tub. Otherwise, get us 2's something specific to our personality, it helps us feel loved, for example last Xmas I received a vinyl record I wanted but would never have spent the money on for myself (it was about £20). Buy us things we wouldn't buy for ourselves but, if you can make it specific to something you know we like, that's the best 👍

eh the 9 doesnt really fit me. hiking sounds miserable but i like heels and looking nice and "uncomfy" clothes feel like a warm hug actually so i like them. also id love a gym membership and i hate puzzles bc theye boring but id love to sit and play a board game with people :) i most value a thoughtful personalized gift myself but i feel like... most people do?
